grandma's movie review - The Rescuers & The Rescuers Down Under - I'm Giving One Away!

This year Disney is cerebrating the 35th Anniversary of the movie, The Rescuers with the release of a Rescuers 2 Movie Collection! This pack includes both the Blu-Ray and DVD for The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under! I'm delighted for the opportunity to review these for you today . . . and announce a give-away! First, the reviews!

The Rescuers: 35th Anniversary Edition -The Rescuers / The Rescuers Down Under
By - Disney
Rating - G

Favorite Features -
  • I love the "Rescue Aid Society" . . . they have a great theme song!
  • wonderful characters - brave little mice and other critters, sweet children and vile villains and hungry gators - all the makings of a great story!
  • strong messages for grandparents/parents and children to talk about: in the Rescuers Penny is an orphan who wants to be rescued and to have parents. Benard and Bianca, two tiny mice, make the choice to rescue Penny, even though they are just two tiny mice. They face danger to help Penny . . . talk with your grandchildren/children about the choice to help someone else and how while they may never physically save someone, how they can be brave people who "save" others who are sad, lonely and in need of someone who cares.
  • in these movies there is a clear distinction between the "bad guy - or girl" who is greedy and only cares about themselves and the "good guy - and girl" who are honest, kind, brave and who help others - even when it puts themselves at risk to do so.
  • love the music!
I love movies like the Rescuers because not only do they tell a good story, but they reinforce the messages I am teaching my grandchildren as well - and provide the opportunity to have important conversations about these messages! The "creed" of the Rescue Aid Society to be honest, loyal and to help those in need is certainly one which we want our grandchildren/children to show in their lives . . . and one which we want to model for them! Be sure to talk with your grandchildren/children about what an "orphan" is and challenge them to pray for orphans - you could even involve them in helping to support an orphan - or a child in need - through WorldHelp. In the movie Bernard asks, "What can two little mice do?", then the end of the movie shows what two little mice CAN do! Ask your grandchildren, "what can you do?" and help them come up with specific things they CAN do to help children who need someone to "rescue" them!

In this story, Medusa asks Penny why she thinks anyone would want to adopt her, leaving Penny feeling sad and unwanted. Talk with your grandchildren/children about how very much they are loved and wanted by you and most importantly by God. Challenge them to share this truth with others!

I love the quote in The Rescuers where Rufus the cat says, "Faith is a bluebird you see from afar, its for real and as sure as the first evening star. You can't touch it, or buy it or wrap it up tight, but it's there just the same making things turn out right!" Hebrews 11:1 tells us - "Faith is the reality of what we hope for, the proof of what we don’t see." (CEV) - be sure to talk with your grandchildren about what faith is and how we can absolutely have faith in Jesus - even when things are sad, confusing or even frightening! And remember, "tomorrow is another day!"

The Rescuers Down Under was one of my children's favorite movies . . . I'm very happy to see it re-released so now my grandchildren can enjoy it! From the bayous in American to the Out Back Down Under, the Rescuers Down Under take viewers on a journey to Australia where the Rescue Aid Society's Bernard and Bianca once again come to the rescue of a child in need; this time a little boy named Cody.

In the Rescuers Down Under it is really fun to see all the different creatures shown in the movie - kangaroos, eagles, kolas, crocodiles, flying squirrels and more! Identify these with your grandchildren/children and take time to talk about which are your favorite . . . be sure to thank God for creating such wonderful, unique and interesting creatures!

In both Rescuer stories they show how greed, bullying, selfishness and cruelty are overcome by kindness, love, compassion and helping others. These are the kind of stories we want our grandchildren/children to see . . . and which we want to talk about with them!

As I mentioned above, not only did Disney send me these movies to review, but they are also making another Blu-ray/DVD combo pack of the two movies available for me to give away (USA only)! If you have followed grandma's cookie jar with Google Friend Connect and/or "Follow grandma's cookie jar by email", then you are entered in the drawing which will be on August 24, 2012. 38. I follow via email (vfoley91@live.com), Facebook and via my Twitter account (greenxmonster). Another one of my childhood favorites! For some reason, I always owned this one on vhs but someone had recorded it from TV for me; it was still used to the point of no return!
