Caroline's story is set in 1812 Sackets Harbor, New York, along the shores of Lake Ontario. As the book, "Meet Caroline" tells us, "In 1812, the nation of Canada didn't exist yet. Instead, the lands north of the Great Lakes were still a collection of British colonies. Today, Upper Canada is the Canadian province of Ontario. In the early 1800's the land around the Great Lakes was American's northern frontier, or edge. The land was covered in forests. Small towns like Sackets Harbor were remote and isolated, a great distance away from cities like Philadelphia or New York. When Caroline was a girl, America was young, too. The United States was barely 30 years old and had just 18 states. But the country was growing." The story goes on to tell how America goes to war with Britain and the battle for Lake Ontario becomes crucial as whoever wins control of the lake, will win the war. Caroline's father and brothers are captured by the British and become prisoners of war. What happens next? Caroline's story is one of courage, strength and one which shows girls today why freedom is so important and to be highly valued!
I want to remind you about a contest American Girl is holding . . . "Have you ever had to be brave? Enter this contest by creating a video clip (up to 60 seconds) about a time you felt like an everyday hero. You can tell a story, re-create a moment, or even act out the scene with your doll. Ask your parent to upload your video here by October 31 for your chance to win. Then come back November 5 to vote for one of the six finalists and help choose the winner of their grand prize, which includes a trip for four to Washington, D.C.; and extra-special day at the American Girl store; a Caroline doll, books and accessories set; plus a VIP tour fo the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History to learn more about life in Caroline's day."
As I said, American Girl sent Caroline for me to review and give away (USA only)! If you would like to be included in this give-away - which will be on November 30, 2012 - please comment below to let me know if you have followed on Google Friend Connect, followed by liking on facebook with the tab in the "Find us on Facebook" box ON THE BLOG (not just liking the post) and/or have followed grandma's cookie jar by email. For each of these which you have done you will receive one entry. In addition, if you "share" this post, you'll receive an additional entry (please let me know if you share). This will help me be able to draw names from among people who would like to win this doll and it gives you several ways to enter the give-away! Thank you for reading grandma's cookie jar and for sharing it with the people you know! (You'll be able to receive additional entries each time I post about her!)
