Join in the Fun!

This has been a busy week! So many fun things are in the works for those of you who read grandma's cookie jar! So . . . to recap . . .

I'm holding a "grandma contest"! I just need you to share about something you do with your grandchildren to create memories and build relationships with them. So far I've had three ladies share what they do . . . there is time for you to share, too! Please share what you do by July 10, 2012. Then, I'll post about each grandma and what they do and between July 10 and September 10 you can "vote" for the grandma/idea you like best! The winning grandma/idea will receive a prize package . . . so far, the package includes a MOGO Paige charmband with charms, three Princess Parables books (I reviewed the first one today on my other blog, About the Children's Department - and I'm giving one away!) and this is only the beginning! There will be things for grandchildren and things for grandma in this prize package, so please be sure to share what you do so you can be in the contest!

MOGO . . . I'm Giving Some Away!

If you have any tween granddaughters, you probably have heard of - or are sure to hear of shortly - MOGO! So . . . what is MOGO, you ask? Well, MOGO is a brand of fun bracelets and other things which have a variety of adorable and fun magnetic charms which "just click" into place! MOGO says, "Our MOGO tagline, 'We just click!' is all about the connections MOGO creates. Friends who just click with each other, Moms and Grandmas who click with their Tweens, even Tweens who just click with animals. And, of course, the charms themselves which "just click" to the charmbands."

grandma's movie review - Mirror, Mirror - I'm Giving One Away!

I am happy for the opportunity to share my review of Mirror Mirror with you! This movie surprised and delighted me with not only the wonderful and humorous way it tells a story - one which we are all pretty familiar with - but with the solid messages, the color, details and just plain fun which, in my opinion, make Mirror Mirror a movie families can watch, enjoy and learn from together!

I Need a Volunteer . . .

Navy Pier EntranceYesterday I posted about my upcoming "Children's Museum Tour" and put out a call for a volunteer in the Chicago area . . . today, I'm still asking for a volunteer! I need someone who lives in, near or who is planning a trip to Chicago and who is willing to take their grandchildren/children to the Chicago Children's Museum. I will give you a pass for four people to go and enjoy a day at the Chicago Children's Museum . . . I just need you to let me know what you - and your grandchildren - most enjoyed at the museum!

Join In the Fun!

Yesterday I posted an invitation to share what you do with your grandchildren/children to create memories and connect in special ways with them . . . thank you Lori for sharing your "Grandma's Boot Camp"! It sounds like great fun!

So, what do you do as something special which your grandchildren/children look forward to? Do you go to the zoo each year and have a picnic in the park for lunch? Do you help your grandchildren put together a "bistro" for their parents so they are able to give their parents a special anniversary dinner? Do you have a wacky water games day? Do you have a special outing, meal, activity? What do you do?

I Have a Winner . . .

grandma's movie review - John Carter - I'm Giving One Away!

This past March, Disney released the story of John Carter. Now, if you didn't know the "back story" to this movie, you may have just written it off as kinda "hokey" and you may have wondered why they didn't set the story on a planet in another galaxy instead of Mars; which we all know is uninhabited. But, if you understand the original story of John Carter was written in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the writer of Tarzan, it helps the movie make sense! In 1912 creating a story about the Martians on the planet Mars makes as much sense as telling a story about aliens from another galaxy would today!

grandma's bookshelf . . . You're A Hero! - I'm Giving One Away!

Around this house we have a "super hero" whenever Josiah is here! As I've shared with you before, our "super hero" is "Super, Snazy, Mighty Josiah!" He, "saves the world and protects the cookies" . . . I'm so glad to have a Super, Snazy, Mighty Josiah around here because otherwise those "one-eyed monsters" would certainly eat all the cookies, and what would grandma's house be with an empty cookie jar??!!!!

Well, you can imagine my delight when I learned of a new Recordable Storybook from Hallmark . . . You're a Hero! Of course I wanted to get one for the "Super, Snazy Mighty" hero at my house, so I was very happy when Hallmark said they'd send one for me to review . . . and another for me to give away!

Do You Plan a Special "Event" for Your Grandchildren/Children?

I recently had the opportunity to talk with a grandma who reads grandma's cookie jar and she shared a special event she puts on each summer for her grandchildren - it sounded so cool! It got me to thinking and wondering . . . how many grandmas - or grandpas, moms or dads - do something similar? Are you a grandma - or grandpa, mom or dad - who does something special for your grandchildren/children over the summer? Do you plan a special "boot-camp", camping trip, water extravaganza, wild and wacky games day, service project or something else which is an opportunity for your grandchildren - and other children - to spend time with you and build relationships and memories? If so, please share what you do by commenting below and then from July 10, 2012 to September 10, 2012 we will take votes to see which idea grandma's cookie jar's readers think is the one they might like to try with their own grandchildren/children! I, of course, will put together a prize package for the one who receives the most votes, so . . . if you have something special which you do, then please do the following . . .

Children's Museum Tour . . . I'll Be Looking For Volunteers . . .

I'm working on arranging a "Children's Museum Tour" and give-away and will need volunteers to help! I've been contacting children's museums from all across the USA and basically it will work as follows . . .

  • when I receive tickets from a museum, I'll post the name of the museum and the city where it is located. The first reader who lets me know they are willing to volunteer to visit with their grandchildren/children and then write me just a brief account of their visit - and maybe send me a photo I could include - will receive free tickets/passes to go and do this!
  • Then, in August, I'll be giving away additional tickets to the children's museums volunteers visited! (I'll post each give-away by the state/location of each children's museum)

Life in Tudor Times - I'm Giving Away One A Girl For All Times Doll!

I posted a couple days ago about life in Tudor Times . . . since I'm giving away one Matilda, A Girl for All Time Doll and her "life" is set in Tudor Times, England.

According to Wikipedia, "Not many children went to school in Tudor times. Those that did go were mainly the sons of wealthy or working families who could afford to pay the attendance fee. Boys were allowed to go to school and began at the age of 4, they then moved to grammar school when they were just 7 years old. Girls were either kept at home by their parents to help with housework or sent out to work to bring money in for the family. They were not allowed to go to school. Boys were educated for work and the girls for marriage and running a household so when they got married they could look after the house for their husbands.

What is Your Focus? Remember!

As I wrote about last week, I'm focusing this month on Depending on and Trusting GodI said I would, "post about the monthly focus and encourage us all to keep our focus on growing in our own walk with Jesus and then gave you a Scripture passage and prayer to think about and make your own - "Psalm 86:1-5 'Please listen, Lord, and answer my prayer! I am poor and helpless. Protect me and save me because you are my God. I am your faithful servant, and I trust you. Be kind to me! I pray to you all day. Make my heart glad! I serve you, and my prayer is sincere. You willingly forgive, and your love is always there for those who pray to you.'

As you go finish this month, please continue to make this your prayer . . . 'Dear Lord, please listen to and answer my prayer because You are my God and I need You to protect and save me. As I go through this day, please help me remember to live as Your faithful servant and to trust You. Please be kind to me and make my heart glad and I will pray to You all day and serve You! I thank and praise You for how You so willingly forgive me and find comfort and strength in knowing Your love is always there for those who pray to You . . . I will be one of those who pray to You! Thank You, Amen!'"

All you need is spray paint and something big and round to use as a stencil - this lady used a pizza box lid which she cut a circle in. Check this link for the details and on the next warm summer day when your grandchildren are over, grab some spray paint, a pizza box lid and get ready for some fun they will remember all their lives! (Don't worry, the paint won't hurt your grass and as it grows and you mow it, it will be gone!)

Beans & Sorghum - Help Your Family Help Other Families in South Sudan

I've been talking this month about involving your grandchildren and family in a project with Samaritan's Purse to help children and families in Sudan and South Sudan; today I'd like to encourage you to consider planning a "Beans and Sorghum" dinner to raise awareness and money for this project.

"How Many Jelly Beans?" - I'm Giving One Away Tomorrow!

Yes, tomorrow I'm giving away one copy of the book, How Many Jelly Beans? You will find my full review of the book at this link, but I also wanted to say, this book is one which will leave children - and adults - with a better understanding of what "how many" looks like - especially when you are talking about big numbers! Like I said in my review, "This is a very fun book for children and grandparents to enjoy together! While it is challenging to unfold the last page so you are able to see one million jelly beans - yes, one million of them! - it was impressive to see how much of my floor was covered by the representation of one million jelly beans! I also enjoyed how "Aiden" came to the conclusion one million jelly beans may be too many jelly beans! (Murphy the dog's response made me smile!) This is a fun and unique book for children and grandparents/parents to enjoy together!"

A Simple, Meaningful and Personal Father's Day Craft . . .

If you are looking for an idea for Father's Day, check this one I found on Pinterest! I love how personal it is and how it gives you a way to involve even your youngest grandchildren!

I'm Giving Away one Girl for All Time Doll!

In the United States, American Girl dolls are a big hit with girls who love dolls and in England there is a new series of dolls which are comparable to the American Girl Dolls! A Girl For All Time Dolls takes girls through the history of England by following one family tree . . . beginning with Matilda Marchmount. The designer and creator of these dolls said, "I was inspired to create A Girl for All Time® – a world of of beautifully designed dolls, with novels and keepsake books, where girls 6+ can explore and enjoy a host of challenging and creative activities. Here, they are inspired by fabulous fashions, original games and stories; they can explore the meaning of friendships and family; they can make favourite recipes; even create their own family tree - with friends, with family, or on their own. Each character in the A Girl for All Time® family, all descended from the first doll, Matilda, features in a series of novels set in different eras of the most exciting times in English history. The novels encourage girls to explore the past, while the keepsake books bring the character’s world to life with themed activities and adventures."

Another Second-Chance Give-Away!

I reviewed and had a drawing for one Xperience Days $50 gift certificate, but the winner didn't get their address to me, so on June 17, 2012 I'm having another drawing for this $50 gift certificate. (You'll find my review of Xperience Days at this link
