grandma's cookbook - Christmas Cookies!

Since Christmas is less than two months away, I thought it would be fun today to share some cute Christmas cookie recipes with you which I found on Pinterest! I especially like the melting snowman cookie - it's so cute! Follow this link and you'll find fourteen cookies with links to complete recipes for each of them!

crafting with grandma - Fun, Excellent & Inexpensive Gifts - Key Snowpeople Ornaments!

Embellished keys - easy Christmas craftOkay, I know it is a huge inconsistency for me. I truly do not like snow. It is cold, wet, cold, unpleasant to drive in and did I mention it is cold? However; in spite of how much I do not like snow - it is after all, cold - I love snowpeople! I decorate with the cute snow people all year long because I really love snowpeople! One of my favorite photos of Josiah is from a couple years ago when he and his momma built a snowbear - sooo cute!

So, when I was browsing on Pinterest and found a link for snowpeople ornaments made from keys, well, I had to share it with you! Have your grandchildren help you search your junk drawers and old purses for old keys and then follow this link for the specifics on making a family of key snowpeople ornaments! You could make one to represent each person in your family and use it to tag their gift - they could hang it on their tree for years to come!

Enjoy!

As I just said in my previous post, in four days my 2013 Month of Special Christmas Give-Aways begins with the give-away of the LeapPad 2 Prize Package! If you look at the left-side column on grandma's cookie jar, you'll see the items I'm giving away this year along with the date for the drawing for each of them. And, I'm not finished yet! I still have more fun give-aways to announce!

So, get ready for a month filled with fun give-aways, crafts, recipes and more fun as a way for me to say "thank you" to everyone who reads grandma's cookie jar! Get ready for the fun to begin!!!!

Four Days Until the LeapPad 2 Prize Package Give-Away!

Special Christmas Give-away November 1, 2013In just four days my Month of Special Christmas Give-Aways begins with the drawing for the LeapPad2 Power Kids' Learning Tablet Prize Package worth $170! The LeapPad2 Power Kids' Learning Tablet is for children ages 3 to 8 and allows you to power up the learning with this fully rechargeable kids' tablet! The LeapPad 2 Power learning tablet is designed to be durable just for kids, with tons of fun features built-in. Includes a custom-built re-charger pack!

Christmas is less than two months away and we might be thinking about giving our grandchildren a learning system or apps and games to go on a system they have. With so much technology available just a click away, choosing the best, most educational apps and e-games for children can be tricky to navigate for any grandparent.  There are so many questions we wonder about: How can we be sure our choices are really educational?  How do we know which apps and games our grandchildren are ready for? Should we be concerned about how much time they spend using apps and games

I was invited to interview DR. JODY SHERMAN LeVOS; the math and science development expert of LeapFrog’s Learning Team. Jody works on products which teach math and science concepts in developmentally appropriate ways using research-based techniques. Before joining LeapFrog, she was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, a researcher and instructor, and a math textbook author. She is also the proud mother of two boys. She earned her doctorate in developmental psychology (specializing in mathematical and cognitive development) at the University of Alberta, in Canada.

Today is National Make a Difference Day!

Yes, today is National Make a Difference Day; "Initiated in 1990, this is a national day devoted to helping others by doing volunteer work in the community. The activity can be almost anything. On this day, millions of Americans participate in community improvement projects taking the form of clean-ups, fix-ups, painting and repair in poorer neighborhoods, parks and municipal facilities. It doesn't matter what project you take on. It doesn't matter whether you help a non-profit organization, the community, your town, nursing home, a church, a food kitchen, or any other group in need. What matters is that you participate."

If your grandchildren are younger, maybe you could help them make cookies (remember, it is National Cookie Month, too) and take them to neighbors or have them help rake leaves for an elderly neighbor.

So, what can you do to help your grandchildren make a difference today?

crafting with grandma - Fun, Excellent & Inexpensive Gifts - Advent Calendars!

Handmade Christmas Advent Calendars, a great alternative to store bought calendars. Get inspired and create your own with these great tutorials and how-tos.As you know, since I've said it a time or two :-), I LOVE to celebrate Christmas! At my house the tree goes up after Thanksgiving dinner and then gifts go under it. Each time my grandsons are at my house between Thanksgiving and Christmas, they get to open a gift! Like I said, I LOVE to celebrate Christmas!

These gifts are small items - I bought nine-packs of Matchbox cars for $5 at a local outlet store, I have been saving books and crocheted a few things for these special early gifts! I'll also make a few treats; such as homemade lollipops to put under the tree for early opening!

So, when I was browsing on Pinterest and found several great ideas for making Advent calendars, I thought it would be fun to share with you so you could make something to give your grandchildren something simple, fun and inexpensive which they could open each day to count down to Christmas! What a fun gift to put under your tree and delight them with the opportunity to open it early . . . and then find a small treat each day until Christmas!

Special Christmas Give-Away - Red Octopus Puppet!

There are many unique, odd and even somewhat bizarre creatures in the world and the red octopus is definitely one of these, so when I saw where Folkmanis had selected the red octopus as one of their new puppets for this year, I was interested in reviewing one. Happily, they sent it and now I am able to give it away!

These handpainted clothing pins look like a fun activity for children and parents. Also you can look at http://www.playhousegifts.com/home for similar handcrafted christmas decorations created in Germany by Steinbach and Ino Schaller. You will find wood nutcrackers and Paper Mache Candy Containers.
Please let me say first of all, I shared this idea a month ago, but I really love it and it is so affordable and fun, so I thought I'd share it again! This is an ornament idea which you can get your grandchildren to help you with . . . even younger ones can paint - or color with permanent ink markers - and you'll end up with something cute which will look even cuter on the tree!

All you need are some spring clothespins, paint - or permanent ink markers and creativity and voila! You'll have great ornaments which will make excellent gifts!

crafting with grandma - Fun, Excellent & Inexpensive Gifts - Crocheted Afghan - Free Pattern & a Yarn Give-Away!

I enjoy crocheting . . . well, I do now! When I was a child my grandma gave me a, "learn to crochet kit" for Christmas. So, during Christmas break that year, I walked down to her house - she just lived a block away - so she could teach me to crochet. The kit had pink yarn and was for cat head potholders, but my hands wouldn't cooperate and I couldn't seem to get how to crochet. So, being a frustrated child I said, "I hate crocheting. It is for old people!" My grandma was not impressed with me calling her old! I didn't try to crochet again for twenty years until I saw a pattern for cute little bunnies dressed like bears, sheep and cows. I thought they would look cute on a shelf by pictures of my children when they were little. So, I went to my sister and she showed me how to crochet! I began to crochet all kinds of things - of course then my husband liked to remind me, "Who did you say crocheting was for?!!!" I'd smile and say, "NOT for old people!"

At any rate, crocheting is really fun and for the cost of yarn you can make wonderful gifts for people on your gift list! I've been busy making hats - so far Agent Perry hats and Minion hats - and have scarves on my "to-do" list yet before Christmas! I also want to crochet warm, fun blankets for my grandsons - I'll post more about them when they are finished!
Free Pattern for A Harlequin stitch blanket (click on the word, "here" and it takes you to the free pattern)
But, if you would like to make a lovely blanket for someone you love, check this great, free pattern which I found on Pinterest! Follow this link for the free pattern - it would make a beautiful blanket for pretty much anyone you know!

Red Heart sent me some yarn for review and I'm delighted for the opportunity to give some away! I LOVE their Gumdrop yarn; not only does it come in a nice variety of colors, but it is so soft! It is perfect for a blanket for a child you love!

It's Cookie Month!

Well . . . around this grandma's house every month is Cookie Month, but technically, October is Cookie Month! What a delicious month to celebrate because who doesn't love a tasty, soft, yet slightly crunchy cookie?!!!!

My daughter-in-law developed a dairy intolerance during her last pregnancy, so since she is a fan of cookies and I tend to make cookies when my grandsons are here - and of course send some home with them - I've had to learn how to substitute dairy ingredients in my cookie recipes . . . and still end up with a tasty cookie. Happily, it wasn't as difficult to do this as I thought it might be!

crafting with grandma - Keyboard Key Ornaments!

Homemade Christmas Ornaments to MakeIt is getting chilly outside so, my thoughts have turned to Christmas! Honestly, it really doesn't take much to get me thinking about Christmas!!! So, what do I do when I really start thinking about Christmas??? Hmmm . . . how about give my grandsons a really early Christmas present???!!! :-) Sounds like a winner of an idea to me!!! :-) I'm going to give them - and their parents - gifts tonight when we take Josiah home from church . . . since they might see this post I'll wait until tomorrow to let you know what I gave them all . . . maybe I'll even be able to include a photo or two!!!

I'm known for giving gifts early . . . besides, Jesus was more likely born in the Spring or Fall, so these gifts are either technically late or right on time! :-)

At any rate, along with thinking about giving gifts, when it gets cold I also think about fun things to make for Christmas and I found on Pinterest a really cool idea for a fun ornament; which I'm also going to share with you all today!

Special Month of Christmas Give-Aways - Desert Tortoise Puppet!

Our Thankfulness Tree!

About a couple weeks ago I posted about making a Thankfulness Tree (you'll find it at this link). So, when Josiah was here the other day, we worked on making our own Thankfulness Tree! He colored one side of white paper with yellow, red and orange crayons then I cut out circles. I had him tell me some of the things he is thankful for; his answers were . . . God, Dad, Mom, Caleb, Shane, Poppa, Grandma, Aunt Tiffy, our house, food and toys! So, I thought I'd share with you a photo of the finished Thankfulness Tree . . .

I'm So Very Thankful!

This is a busy time of year . . . and it will be getting even busier! Children are busy in particular . . . they just went back to school, Halloween is coming up - I am not particularly a "fan" of Halloween, but it is something children look forward to; after all, what isn't there not to love about people giving you candy??!!! Thanksgiving is next month and Christmas is just two months away! Yes, it is a very busy time of year!

Even though Thanksgiving is part of this busy time of year, it is very easy for it to almost be overlooked in the rush to get to Christmas. It is also very easy for Thanksgiving to focus more on the food, than on the being thankful. So, today I want to think about some of the many things I'm thankful for!

On my other blog I wrote; "Do we notice when God is answering our prayers? Do we notice the blessings He is giving us? Do we make thanking God a regular part of our day - every day?

God has done so much for us; He loves us! He gives us His grace! He forgives us! He hears our prayers! He answers our prayers! He does so much, if we sat down and focused on His blessings; big and small, we would have much to be thankful for!

So, with Thanksgiving just over a month away, I want to take some time to thank God for His many blessings! Today I want to thank Him for His love! Just look at these verses about God's love for us . . .

Special Christmas Give-Away - Raggedy Ann & Andy Sleepy Time Crib Cover

I am very happy today to let you know about another of my Special Christmas Give-Aways . . . this time it is for a lovely cross stitch crib cover kit from Plaid/Bucilla featuring Raggedy Ann & Andy!

When I was a child I had a Raggedy Ann doll - I loved that doll! Even now - many years later, whenever I see a Raggedy Ann I feel happy! So when I saw this lovely cross stitch kit I thought it would be a great addition to my Special Christmas Give-Aways and Plaid/Bucilla was kind enough to send it to me so I could give it away! First, a few details about this crib cover . . .

grandmas, Let's Teach our Grandchildren the Timothy Prayer!

Some of you may know, along with writing grandma's cookie jar, I also write About the Children's Department - a blog about children's ministry. Today I posted about the Timothy Prayer; an opportunity to pray for our elected leaders and involve children in praying as well. I said . . .

"As adults, we may not stop and think about how news reports may be heard and interpreted by children. We may not stop and think of how children may be frightened by the words we say about how our elected officials are failing to work together to solve problems and the 'dire' consequences which we may experience if they do not. It is likely many children are hearing these reports and conversations and may be feeling stress and even fear at what this means for them and their families. While I could certainly write about being careful about the words we speak, today I want to share with you an opportunity we can all come together to support; and one which we can engage children in as well."

I went on to share about the Timothy Prayer - I want to share this with you as well because it is all too easy for our words about our government and it's leaders to become highly emotional and this can stress and frighten our grandchildren and children. I know I want my grandsons to grow to be men who turn to God with their concerns rather than become angry and frustrated with them. For this to happen, they need to learn to do this as children and they need to see it modeled to them by the adults in their lives. Since I'm their grandma, this includes me.

grandma's cookie jar - Baked Apple Cider Donuts!

I love donuts! I really enjoy apple cider, so when these are combined for a baked donut, in a recipe I found on Pinterest, well, I'll have to try it for sure!

I have some shaped cookie cutters - maybe it will be fun to make shaped donuts with these cutters. I'll let you know how it turns out - I think I'll make a batch on Tuesday so I can leave some with Caleb when I pick Josiah up for school on Wednesday - and so Josiah can have some as well (and their parents, too!)

crafting with grandma - Nativity Ornament

Nativity Ornament Wood Craft TutorialIt is so easy for children to focus on the "getting" part of Christmas . . . what gifts will they "get"? What activities will they "get" to do? How many parties will they "get" to go to? The list goes on. But, Christmas is really about giving, God gave His Son to us! Well . . . I guess it is also about "getting" as we are the ones who "get" to receive the gift of Grace and forgiveness from God!

At any rate, Christmas is a wonderful time of year to help our grandchildren focus on "giving" and one way we can help them to do this is by helping them make ornaments which they can then give to their neighbors, friends, teachers, shut-ins, coaches, pastors . . . you help them decide who to give them to!

Special Month of Christmas Give-Aways - Cuisinart 3-in-1 Cooker!
