It is Donut Day!!! Have a FREE Donut to Celebrate!!!

Today is one of my favorite days of the year . . . Donut Day!!! After all, what isn't there
to love about donuts???!!! So, before we look at some fun donut "facts", the really "important" information . . . where you can get a donut for free!

  • Dunkin' Donuts: Stop at any participating store and receive a free donut with any beverage purchase
  • Cumberland Farms: Receive a free donut with purchase of any hot or iced coffee or Chill Zone beverage
  • Participating Tim Horton's offers customers who may an in-store purchase today, one free donut
  • Krispy Kreme: No purchase is necessary for you to receive one free donut at participating stores!
  • Winn-Dixie: You can enjoy a free donut hole - limit one per customer while supplies last
  • Check with your local bakeries as they also may be participating by giving out free donuts on this tasty day!
Now, before you run out for your free donut, check these donut "facts" out which I found on-line . . .
  • "During WWI, Salvation Army volunteers tried to boost soldiers' morale with food. The 'Sallies' started out with pies, but found baking them on the road was impractical. Donuts could be fried on a camp stove and were strongly associated with mom and home. After the war, the 'Sallies' came home as heroines."
  • The top three donuts sold in this country are glazed, chocolate glazed and Boston Kreme-filled
  • "The origins of New England's original donuts likely lie with settlers form the English county of Hertfordshire, who brought with them recipes for yeast-raised 'Hertfordshire Nuts', which were also called 'dow nuts'."
  • The original pastries, which did not have holes, were the size and shape of walnuts - thus the name
  • When cake donuts became popular in the 1830's, cooks found the cooked more evenly if you poked out the middle.
What is your favorite kind of donut? While I think it is difficult to find a donut which is not tasty, my favorites are the simple iced chocolate and the Boston Kreme!

Grab your grandchildren, visit a donut shop and enjoy Donut Day!
