grandma's bookshelf - Calvin, Look Out! - I'm Giving One Away!

As I said yesterday, I get invited to review a LOT of books each year; I have recently been invited to review a cute story about a little bird who gets glasses . . . Josiah really enjoyed this story! I'm very happy to share it with you today - and give one away! (See specifics below!)

Calvin, Look Out!
Author - Jennifer Berne
Illustrator - Keith Bendis
Publisher - Sterling Children's Books
Ages - 4-7

Favorite Features -
  • I love the illustrations!
  • The story has several unexpected twists and a delightful end!
  • I love the opportunity this book gives for grandparents/parents to talk with children about teasing/bullying, holding on to the truth, being happy with who we are and forgiveness
Sterling Children's Books says; "Birds of a feather may flock together, but Calvin is not like the rest of his starling flock. It's easy to see why: this bright birdie always has his beak in a book. One day it becomes clear to Calvin that things look a little . . . well, unclear. A nifty pair of eyeglasses brings the world back into focus, but now Calvin is the only bespectacled starling. After getting teased about his new glasses, he sets off into the woods and finds himself in trouble. Can this book-smart bird use what he's learned in order to save himself?"

If a child you love enjoys reading and/or wears glasses, this story about Calvin is one they are likely to enjoy! Calvin is smart and does not give up when he ends up stuck; he thinks of a way to get help and in so doing, helps his 67,432 cousins and friends - just in time to "migrate as the coolest flock in the whole, wide sky!" I'm very happy for the opportunity to give away one, Calvin, Look Out! If you are over the age of 18, live in the USA and would like to be included in this give-away, which will be on September 1, 2014, you may enter by commenting below to tell me about a time when you were "stuck" - I was about four years old and got stuck in the mud outside my house one spring day! I was sure I'd be stuck forever - or sink all the way to China! A neighbor heard me crying, pulled me out of the mud and took me to my mom.

Additional entries in this give-away are available if you follow on Google+, Google Friend Connect, follow by liking on facebook with the tab at this link (not just liking the post) and/or have followed grandma's cookie jar by email. For each of these which you have done you will receive one entry. In addition, if you "share" this post, you'll receive an additional entry (please let me know if you share!) This will help me be able to draw names from among people who would like to win Calvin, Look Out! and it gives you several ways to enter the give-away! Thank you for reading grandma's cookie jar and for sharing it with the people you know!

  8. I'm a retired teacher and was staying late working one day at school. I had to go outside for a minute to clean out the praying mantis aquarium I had in my classroom and didn't realize the door would be locked from the outside. I walked around the entire school trying to knock and get someone's attention. Finally after 20 minute the custodian heard me and let me inside.
