Some, "grandma bragging" . . .

My grandson Josiah just turned six - he is a really fun six year old! One thing he likes to do
is to read. Yes, I said he likes to read! Not only does he like to read, but he is actually shocking his aunt with how good of a reader he is! Yesterday we were celebrating because his daddy has earned his Master Mechanic Certification and my parents gave Dave a card. On the card was the word, "Congratulations!" Josiah picked the card up and read the word - on his own with no help.

This - aside from making me feel very proud and happy with him - caused me to think about how often do we think children are too young to try something or do something. How often do we "dumb" things down for them? Josiah has always had a large vocabulary - filled with words with lots of letters! He not only used these big words, but understood what they meant so he used them correctly. This is due in part because his parents - and we - spoke to him as an intelligent person. We did not use, "baby language" with him. Plus, they and we have always read lots of books to him as he grew up. I guess it should not be a huge surprise for him to take to reading so quickly!

grandma's cookbook - Fall Cookies!

Today is a beautiful day! The sun is shining, it is in the 60's and headed for the 70's - a beautiful Fall day! So, when I found a recipe on Pinterest for Pumpkin Sugar Cookies, it sounded like the perfect recipe to share with you today!

Just follow this link and you'll find the recipe - I'd leave the cream cheese frosting off because I'm guessing the cookie has enough great flavor without it!

I also found a recipe for Caramel Apple cookies on the page with the Pumpkin Sugar Cookie, so since it sounded very Fallish, I decided to share it with you, too! You'll find it at this link! Enjoy!

grandma's chuckles - "NO!!! NOT Dear Jesus!!!"

The other day the boys spent the night at our house. When it was bedtime, Caleb was
having a serious case of the, "wiggles", so, I started to pray; "Dear Jesus," When Caleb heard me, he said, "NO!!! NOT Dear Jesus!!!" I continued and said, "Please help Caleb go to sleep." Caleb said, "NO! Do NOT help me go to sleep!" I said, "Please help Caleb's wiggly toes rest and go to sleep." Caleb said, "No! Do NOT help my wiggly toes rest and go to sleep!" At this point it was all I could do to not bust up laughing!!!

I continued and said, "Please help Caleb's wiggly feet rest and go to sleep." Caleb said, "Please do not help my wiggly foots rest and go to sleep." I said, "Dear Jesus," and Caleb said, "Thank You for loving us". I said, "Please help Caleb's wiggly legs . . ." and Caleb said, "rest and go to sleep." I said, "Please help Caleb's wiggly fingers . . . " and Caleb said, "rest and go to sleep." I said, "Please help Caleb's wiggly hands relax and go to sleep." Caleb said, "Please help my wiggly hands relax and go to sleep." I said, "Please help Caleb's eyes rest and go to sleep." Caleb said, "Please help my eyes rest and go to sleep."

We continued praying for all of Caleb to rest and relax and go to sleep, then Caleb wanted to do it all again! It was not too long after this when all of Caleb was sleeping! I will remember this unusual time of prayer for a very long time!

crafting with grandma - Christmas Hats for 2014!

Well, I've been debating which hats I want to make for the sweet boys this year - I thought
about making Dr. Who hats, but the show is too scary for the boys, so I do not want to make them a Dr. Who hat.

Which brings me back to funny monsters and shark hats! I think these will be fun hats for the boys this year and have started working on the monster hats! I found a great pattern on Esty (it cost me $4.99, but the pattern has sizes for everyone; baby through adult!) I love the bumps and the silly look on the face of this little monster hat - I'll be adding earflaps because we live in Michigan and winters are cold here!

crafting with grandma - Crocheted Dolls!

I LOVE having three grandsons - they make my heart happy and I absolutely would not
trade them for anything or anyone in the world! I love making up "boy" stories about monsters, aliens, and yes, even giant robot spiders! I know there will be no stories about flowers, butterflies and sweet, cute things . . . unless the monsters are stomp, stomp, stomping on them! Grandsons are great fun and a true delight!

If I had a granddaughter, along with "sweet" stories, I definitely would make these crocheted dolls for her which I found on Pinterest. So, if you have a granddaughter, check this link for a wealth of free crochet patterns and have fun making adorable, cute dolls . . . they would make wonderful Christmas gifts and you have lots of time to make them for Christmas!

Enjoy!

What Should I Ask Bethany Hamilton?

Tomorrow (the 15th) I'm participating in a live chat with Bethany Hamilton. Bethany will
be discussing her new book, Body & Soul and will talk about spiritual and physical health. In case you do not know, Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who survived a 2003 shark attack in which her left arm was bitten off, but ultimately returned to – and was victorious in – professional surfing. She will answer questions, so what should I ask her? Do any of your grandchildren/children have questions I could ask her? (She welcomes questions from kids)

grandma's chuckles - "Don't Look!", the "Cooperating" Refrigerator & Super Josiah!

I am a very blessed grandma! My grandsons "look out" for me! Last night when the boys
were over, they were watching a movie which had a big spider in it. Every time the spider showed up, Josiah (who was sitting in my lap) put his hand over my eyes and said, "Don't look, grandma!" Caleb also told me not to look! The boys know I am not a fan at all of spiders, so they warned and protected me from having to see a spider - even an animated one! I feel so loved!

Caleb is working on being potty-trained - sometimes he is not real willing to use the potty, but if I say I'm going to race and beat him to the bathroom - he takes off. He is always standing by the bathroom door with a big smile on his face while he says; "I'm first! I beat you, grandma!" After he uses the potty and washes his hands, he gets to go get a chocolate candy from the refrigerator. The other day he went to open it, but couldn't get the door open, so he said, "Grandma, I need help! The refrigerator isn't cooperating!" Later, when he went to open the door again, it opened right up for him, so he said, "Grandma! The refrigerator door is cooperating now!" He makes me smile!

crafting with grandma - Crocheted Denim Purse!

I was browsing on Pinterest this morning and saw a pin for a great crocheted purse - using
old denim jeans! It would make a wonderful gift and with Christmas just a touch over three months away, you would have time to make one for someone on your gift list!

I really like it and if I can find enough denim to make one, I just might do so - although I'd add a lining because I wouldn't want to lose anything through the stitches . . . which may not be an issue as it may crochet tightly enough, but just in case, a lining could be a great addition!

Dolphin Tale 2 - Movie Releases and a Fun Give-Away!

And the fun just continues! I've had several companies invite me to participate in reviews/give-aways lately - which translates into a lot of fun and opportunities for you to win some great things!

As you likely know, tomorrow - September 12, 2014, is the release to theaters of Dolphin Tale 2! "Inspired by true events, Dolphin Tale 2  continues the story of the brave dolphin Winter, whose miraculous rescue and recovery—thanks to a groundbreaking prosthetic tail—made her a symbol of hope and perseverance to people around the world and inspired the 2011 family hit movie “Dolphin Tale.” This film reunites the entire main cast, led by Harry Connick Jr., Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, and of course, the remarkable dolphin Winter as herself. Champion surfer Bethany Hamilton, who has been an example of courage, also appears in the film.

It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett, rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only pool mate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium."

Sounds like a movie the entire family can - and will - enjoy! I have several links for you which you may find helpful -

Mia Hamm Interview and LeapFrog LeapBand - I'm Giving One Away

"Televisions, computers, tablets and so much more.  The list of technology available to children on a daily basis is long and ever changing.  While technology makes life easier on today’s families, it also means fewer children are spending time playing than ever before.  It’s important for parents and grandparents to get involved and encourage their children to get up, get active and get the CDC-recommended 60 minutes per day of physical activity.

Former pro soccer phenom Mia Hamm has been an athlete her entire life – and her love of physical activity is something she and her husband have worked hard to instill in their children."  This past Monday I had the opportunity to interview Mia about how we can get our children up and moving - check the interview out here!

grandma's bookshelf - Children's Activity Atlas - I'm Giving One Away!

With children back to school the focus in many families is on learning and having a great new school year. I know Josiah's first week of school as a First Grader has gone very well! So, when Sterling Children's Books invited me to review their new Children's Activity Atlas, I thought it sounded interesting . . . and the timing is great for a book like this!

"Something Nice"!

Yesterday my son posted a short video of Caleb which literally filled my heart with so much happiness, I cried! My son Dave, was talking with Caleb about tools and how Caleb liked helping his dad work on their van with tools when Dave asked Caleb if he wanted to say anything to grandma. Caleb nodded his head. Dave asked him what he wanted to say, then Caleb smiled, turned toward the phone and said; "Something nice!"
It was definitely something nice to say to his grandma!!! And sweet!!! And wonderful!!!! It is my favorite video!

Ravelry: Fabulous Fedora pattern by Deborah ZieglerI was browsing on Pinterest this morning and found a wonderful, free pattern for a crocheted fedora . . . I don't think I'll make it in bright pink, but it is a pattern I'd very likely make in a different color - maybe blue or black or brown!

grandma's bookshelf - The Legend of Sheba: Rise of a Queen - I'm Giving One Away!

I am often (typically at least once a week - many weeks more than once) invited to review books for children . . . which, since I have grandsons and since I personally find children's books to usually be a lot of fun, I do review them. While I am invited often to read novels, I don't always have time to do so; plus, most novels are predictible . . . a young woman is in love, discovers she misplaced her love and trust, is crushed, but ends up meeting "Mr. Right" and "falls in love", gets married and, "lives happily ever after". The setting may change, but the story is almost always the same. So, I typically pass on novels.

However; once in a while I receive an invite to review a novel which captures my interest; The Legend of Sheba: Rise of a Queen is one such book! Not only was I invited to review this book, but an additional copy is available for me to give away! More on this later, but for now, I am looking forward to telling you about this book!
