How Do We Pass on a Heritage of Faith? God's Word on our Hearts

Image result for images for God's Word on our heartsWe have been looking at how we are part of God's plan to pass on a heritage of faith to our grandchildren, and we need to focus on doing so. Today I want to think about what it means when Deuteronomy 6 tells us to -
  • Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.
Bible times people had little boxes with Scripture inside - they wore these on their foreheads and wrists and a sign on their doors. A very literal following of these verses; which certainly we could put Scripture in our homes on the walls, or even wear jewelry with Scripture on it, but I think this is about really having God's Words in our hearts and directing our lives. God's Word has to be more than things we wear or decorate with; it needs to be on our hearts and lived in our lives and we can do it in the following ways . . .
  • Do what God's Word says - talk about it.
  • Tell our grandchildren how God has worked in our lives in the past and how He continues to do so today.
  • Tell our grandchildren what we are learning from God's Word.
  • Ask our grandchildren what they are learning from God's Word.
  • Look for ways to connect what we are doing with God and His Word - for example; when you are enjoying the outside, talk about God's creation. When you are enjoying a piece of fruit, talk about God's creation again and thank God for His blessings.
  • Pay attention to what is happening in our grandchildren's lives - pray with them about school, friends and anything bothering them.
  • And, yes, we can put verses which have special meaning to us on our walls or even wear shirts, jewelry with verses as reminders to us as well.
These are just a few ideas of how we can remember God's Word by keeping it in our hearts - and maybe put some on our walls as well!
