just as grandma's cookie jar should always be full of good things, this blog will be full of good ideas, information, activities and reviews of things to help grandma . . . and grandpa, mom and dad too . . . pass on a heritage of faith to the children in their lives!
Yes, today, June 5, 2015 is National Doughnut Day! If you would like to celebrate with free doughnuts, check Krispy Kremeto find out the location where you can choose, absolutely free, a doughnut of your choice to celebrate or Dunkin' Donuts where you do have to purchase a beverage to get a free doughnut. What isn't there to love about free doughnuts??? Every day should be doughnut day!!! :-) When I was little my grandma used to make homemade doughnuts! I loved her doughnuts, so today I'm sharing her recipe with you! Ingredients -
2 cupsflour
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspooncinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1 quart oil for frying
optional - powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar mixture
Directions -
Heat oil in 2qt pan to 375 degrees F.
Add flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Mix in butter until crumbly.
Stir in milk and egg.
With floured hands, lightly knead the smooth dough.
Turn onto floured board or counter.
Pat dough into 1/4 inch thickness and dip either doughnut cutter or two biscuit cutters in flour to cut-out doughnuts.
Carefully drop doughnuts into hot oil, only a few at a time. Fry , turning once, for about 3 minutes or until golden brown.
Drain on prepared paper towels.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon-sugar mixture - or as my grandma used to do, frost with a white simple frosting :-)
I have a set of Mini Noah's Ark Cookie Cutters which I like to use when I make doughnuts . . . they give me small, animal-shaped doughnuts which certainly add to the fun! Enjoy!
