Amy Grant's lovely song, Breath of Heaven gives us some possibilities to consider when we think about these questions. Look at the lyrics -
I have traveled many moonless night
Cold and weary, with a babe inside
And I wonder what I've done
Holy Father, You have come
And chosen me now
To carry Your son
I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone,
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now
Be with me now
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone,
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now
Be with me now
Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Light up my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness
For You are holy
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Light up my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness
For You are holy
Breath of heaven
Do You wonder as You watch my face
If a wiser one one should have had my place
But I offer all I am
For the mercy of Your plan
Help me be strong
Help me be
Help me
Do You wonder as You watch my face
If a wiser one one should have had my place
But I offer all I am
For the mercy of Your plan
Help me be strong
Help me be
Help me
Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Light up my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness
For You are holy
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Light up my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness
For You are holy
Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Light up my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness
For You are holy
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Light up my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness
For You are holy
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
You can hear this beautiful song at the following link. As you listen to this beautiful song, which might be similar to the prayers Mary may have lifted to God, think about how Mary may have felt alone. In her time, she could have been stoned to death for being pregnant and not married. There must have been many people - friends, family, neighbors, people from her temple, who all thought she was guilty of a serious sin and deserving of death. And, she was just a teen. She may have felt alone. She may have turned to God asking Him to, "be forever hear me".
The words to this song, while Amy Grant wrote them as what Mary may have prayed, can easily be the words we, and our grandchildren, may feel at times. We may feel, "cold, weary and frightened in a world cold as stone". We may wonder if we have to, "walk this path alone." Take time to talk with your grandchildren about times when you may have felt like this and how God, "held you together and was forever near you." Sit down with them and let them share with you how/when they might have felt like this and spend time together praying;

But I offer all I amThis beautiful song/prayer gives us some wonderful opportunities to have important conversations with our grandchildren!
For the mercy of Your plan
Help me be strong
Help me be strong
