grandma's movie review - The Good Dinosaur

Around this grandma's house, dinosaurs are a positive thing. I have sweet rascals who like to pretend they are dinos . . . and honestly, if real dinos were even half a cute as my little "dinos", they would have been a lot of fun!

So, since the movie, The Good Dinosaur released to bluray and was available for rent, we decided to rent it to see what we thought of it . . . and I'm happy to share my thoughts with you today.

The Good Dinosaur
Studio - Walt Disney
Rating - PG (The dad dino does die in this movie, and this is quite sad. The boy dino - Arlo - does get washed down the river away from his family, is chased by pterodactyls, and then velociraptors want to eat him - could be some of the reasons for the PG rating.)

Favorite Features -
  • Amazing animation - the water in the river could almost be real video of real water . . . did I mention the animation is amazing???!!!
  • Characters children - and adults - will enjoy and care about.
  • Story has much to talk about with your grandchildren.
  • Solid depiction of family and friendship.
  • The parents in the story are ones who love and care for their children.
Disney says; "From the innovative minds of Disney-Pixar comes a hilariously heartwarming adventure about the power of confronting and overcoming your fears. THE GOOD DINOSAUR asks the question: what if the asteroid which forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely, and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? In this epic journey into the world of dinosaurs, an apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of. Bring home this original story full of humor, heart, action and imagination, perfect for the whole family!"

I was pleasantly surprised by The Good Dinosaur. The first thing which caught my attention is the excellence which is shown by the time and attention Disney/Pixar clearly gave to the animation. It is amazing!

But, amazing animation on its own does not necessarily make a movie we will enjoy. This is where the ability to make and tell a good movie has to come into play . . . and with The Good Dinosaurit absolutely does! The characters quickly capture our attention and leave us "rooting" for them!

I LOVE how the dad and mom Apatosaurus' clearly (in this story) love their children. They model love for one another, working together to benefit the family, patience with their children, and encourage their children - especially little Arlo who is the smallest and who is struggling to see how he "fits" in his world - by telling them, "You will make your mark for doing something bigger than yourself and I can't wait to see it!

The dad also tells Arlo later, when he is struggling with how he is afraid of so many things; "Sometimes you gotta get through your fear to see the beauty on the other side." And the dad T-rex, tells Arlo, "If you ain't scared of a croc bitting you on the face, you aren't alive! If you can get through your fear, yo'll find out what you are made of."

Clearly there are a number of messages in The Good Dinosaur which give us much to talk about with our grandchildren - working to serve and help others, how to deal with fear, and how family matters. I also add to this list the need to talk with our grandchildren about evolution - the story is built on the premise the asteroid which "supposedly" hit the earth and killed of the dinos ages ago, missed and so dinos continued to live and thrive on the earth - while humans remained as cave people. I personally believe there was no such thing as a "cave man - or woman", because God created Adam and Eve as intelligent people who had language and the ability to care for the earth, themselves, and their family.

But, I'm not afraid to have these conversations with my grandsons - I was never afraid to have these conversations with my children either. We talk about what some people believe about evolution and what God's Word says. We talk about how if God's Word says something, then we know it is the truth.

Back to the story - I really love how it shows Arlo had fears - we all do. I love how it shows he had parents and others in his life who encouraged him and supported him as he discovered he did not have to live in fear. Of course with my grandchildren I also talk about how God does not give us a spirit of fear, but instead gives us His love and the power to have a sound mind which is not ruled by fear!

So, all-in-all, I give The Good Dinosaur my stamp of approval! A well-told story, amazing animation, and messages which give me much to talk about with my grandson - a fun movie to enjoy with a big bow of popcorn!
