Just for Fun - Mother's Day Trivia

Mother's Day is tomorrow, so I thought it would be fun to look at some Mother's Day trivia I found on-line. Did you know . . .

  • In Britain, during the Middle Ages, it was customary for the wealthy to give servants the day off on Mothering Sunday (the fourth Sunday of Lent), so they would be able to visit their mothers, who often lived far away.
  • In Serbia, Mother’s Day is called Materice and is celebrated on the second Sunday before Christmas. Children sneak into their mother’s bedroom and gently tie her feet with ribbon or string. To negotiate her release, the mother gives her children small gifts. (Not much in it for Mom, but she does get to lie down for a bit.)
I also found the following Mother's Day trivia . . .
  • In the Bible, Eve is credited with being the "Mother of All the Living."
  • Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, who started Mother's Day celebrations, also filed a lawsuit in an effort to stop the over- commercialization of Mother's Day. She lost her fight. Anna had hoped for a day of reflection and quiet prayer by families, thanking God for all their mothers had done.
  • In the vast majority of the world's languages, the word for "mother" begins with the letter M.
  • Many of the sweaters worn by Mr. Rogers on the popular television show, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, were actually knitted by his real mother.
So - did you know any of these? I knew some and found the one about how "Mother" in most of the world's languages begins with the letter "m" to be very interesting!
