Beat the Heat with Water Fun

Where I live in Michigan it is supposed to be 95 degrees today. Depending on where you live this may or may not seem very hot, but when you add in the humidity which will accompany the high temperatures, our heat index (or humisery index) is expected to top 110 degrees. An uncomfortable day ahead for sure.

Free Cards to Download & Snail Mail

Many of you downloaded the card I shared with you last week which you are able to mail to your grandchildren with a note from you. (If you did not, you will find it at this link.) So, I thought it might be a good idea to share the first card, from this series, with you again, in case you did not see it to download and use it with your grandchildren. You will find it at the following link.

I have two more cards in this series (so far) and will share them in the next couple months. All grandchildren tend to enjoy receiving real mail, so sending them notes from time to time is a great way to connect whether they live near or far and no matter the age. It is also a great way to hand down the faith as you are able to include a personal note with the cards!

Feel free to share these cards with your grandchildren and tell other grandparents you know, so they are able to do the same.

Baked Donuts

Baked Doughnuts Recipe - ZipList
Okay, today is not "Donuts Day", but I think every day should be! I really do LOVE donuts . . . but, since they are not particularly good for me, I rarely eat them. However; with this new recipe I found on Pinterest, I may start eating them more often - still not a lot, but more often! After all, baked donuts can't be that terribly bad for me . . . can they? :-)

Show Real Love - Forgive

What is love, really? It is more than a "feeling", it is an "action". "God so loved the world that He gave"! (John 3:16) This is what love is, really. It is grace in action. God loved us enough to give us grace . . . He forgave us! He is our Example. we need to remember grace when our grandchildren do something wrong - as all children, no matter how sweet and adorable and wonderful they are - will do. So what does this look like? Well . . .

Terra Cotta Luminaries

If your grandchildren are a bit older - elementary and high school age - I have a fun project you could do with them . . . one which they could use as gifts for parents, school teachers, Sunday school teachers or even something they could use as a thank-you/hostess gift for a friend's mom when they are invited over for dinner or some special event. Terra Cotta Luminaries are pretty straight-forward to make, but give your grandchildren an opportunity to express their own creativity - they could design it to match a season, holiday or just decorate it however they like!

Cooking = Times to Remember

What do you remember from when you were a child? Which family memories stand out to you when you remember being young? For me, I remember times when my family got together . . . there were always amazing things to eat as my family had excellent cooks in it! My grandmas and my mom could all cook! There are few things in life as wonderful as time spent with family . . . when you can add in tasty things to eat . . . well, it is the "cherry on top"!

Grandmas See With Their Heart

Don't you just love this saying! It matters for us to see our grandchildren with our heart and for them to know we always see them through eyes of love.

After all, this is how God sees us - through "eyes" of love. So, make time today to see your grandchildren through eyes of love and show your love - whether they live near or far. It matters and makes a real difference.

"No Cows Have Licked My Head!"

There are many wonderful, "perks" to being grandma . . . hugs, kisses, snuggles . . . all wonderful "perks". But another is enjoying the funny things the grandchildren say. I want to share with you something funny my youngest grandson, Shane, said a couple years ago.

I was talking with my oldest grandson, Josiah, about cowlicks and I told him he and his youngest brother each had two cowlicks on their heads. Shane looked at me with surprise and said; "I do not! No cows have licked my head!"

Like I said, "perks"! What funny things have your grandchildren said which left you laughing?

Inspire Cartwheels in Their Hearts

My almost-seven-year-old grandson recently learned to do cartwheels - he has such joy when he is "cartwheeling" across the yard! Joy, absolute joy!

So, when I read this quote from Mr. Rogers about inspiring cartwheels in my grandson's hearts, I have a very definite picture of what this looks like!

I want to inspire joyful cartwheels in my grandsons' hearts and believe I am able to do so by praying for and with them, encouraging them, laughing with them, playing with them - by loving them with my all.

On Children's Day we had dinner at my house and my grandsons were able to sit and listen as their parents and grandparents took turns sharing what they love so much about each of them. Their eyes twinkled, they had the biggest smiles on their faces as they listened to the four adults who most influence them tell why they loved them. They had "cartwheels in their hearts".

As the Summer begins and you spend time with your grandchildren in the coming months, or connect on-line if they live far, be sure to take advantage of opportunities to inspire those "cartwheels" in their hearts with those which just come along as well as times you plan. This is part of what it looks like to hand down the faith and it matters!

Be Kind. Be Kind. Be Kind.

Simple to say, simple to remember, and actually simple to do, as being kind is not difficult once you make the choice to do so. Encourage your grandchildren to be people who are kind, because when they do this, they truly will be successful in what matters the most - in the type of person they are.

Whenever you "catch" them being kind, notice what they did or said and tell them how happy you are to see them make the choice to be kind. Think of things you are able to do with them which will provide an opportunity for them to be kind - then go do them!

And of course, be certain you model what it looks and sounds like to be a person who is kind - it matters!

"There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind."

Happy Children's Day

just for fun - Root Beer Float Fun Facts

Sunday, June 10, 2018, is Children's Day; yes, it is a real holiday started in the 1800's. We are celebrating it tomorrow at our house with our grandchildren and part of what we are doing is to make and enjoy root beer floats! So, I thought it would be fun to share with you some fun root beer float fun facts which I found on-line. Did you know . . .

"Often When You Think You're at the End of Something, You're at the Beginning of Something Else."

As you likely know, along with writing this blog, I also write another blog for grandmas - Grandmas with Heart. I try not to duplicate too many posts on these two blogs, but I have noticed from my daily "stats" you all seem to be enjoying the posts I've been putting up with the memes of sayings from Mr. Rogers, so this morning I'm sharing part of another one - feel free to follow this link to read all of it.

This morning when I got around I turned my computer on, as I do pretty much each morning. But this morning I had a message which said it was updating and it would take awhile - which it did; almost two hours. So, I spent the two hours reading in Luke and praying for family - a wonderful two hours for sure!

I love this saying; "Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else." Life often does not end up the way we think it will - whether it is the activities of the morning, or a major turn in our lives. This is true for us and it is true for our grandchildren as well. Part of handing down the faith involves sharing with our grandchildren how God has shown His good plans for our lives and helping them understand and believe He has good plans for their lives as well - when things go as they think they will and when they do not . . .

Celebrate Your Grandchildren & Be Sure They Know You Love Them

This coming Sunday June 10th, is Children's Day! (If you look it up on Google, it says the USA celebrates Children's Day on the second Sunday in June - this has been the official date since the 1800's - I really did not make this holiday up!!!)

My grandsons look forward to it each year; typically they chose the menu and usually a water gun fight finds its way into the activities somewhere! We will have fun for sure!   (Like I really need an excuse to celebrate my grandsons, but Children's Day is a fun day to do so!)

just for fun - It is Iced Tea Month

June is a month of wonderful things - the start of summer vacation (my grandsons like this, a lot!), warm, sunny weather (typically) and it is iced tea month! I have an iced tea machine and make blueberry green tea or raspberry/blackberry/blueberry green tea by filling the basket with fruit, adding five green tea bags and setting it to brew. Simple and delicious!

So, since it is Iced Tea Month I thought it might be fun to share some fun tea facts I found online . . .

Help Your Grandchildren Experience Joy - Encourage Their Play

With Summer Break upon us, what better time is there than this to encourage children to play, imagine and enjoy being a child! God created children to do all these things, so encourage their play and creative spirit and make time to play with them, because in so doing, you will make a great difference in their lives!

I love this saying: "When we treat children's play as seriously as it deserves, we help them feel the joy which is found in the creative spirit. It's the things we play with and the people who help us play which makes a great difference in our lives." Remember this throughout the summer as you build your relationship with your grandchildren and hand down the faith!

Children's Day & the Kala Learn To Play Color Chord Ukulele

Children's Day is just over a week away as it is always the second Sunday in June; and yes, Children's Day is a real holiday! Now, I do believe every day should be Children's Day, but just like we celebrate Mothers, Fathers and Grandparents on their special day, we are able to celebrate children on their special day - the second Sunday in June.

So, as I thought about Children's Day it occurred to me a ukulele might be a fun item to give a child on Children's Day. I contacted Kala and they sent me their wonderful Kala Learn To Play Color Chord Ukulele to review; today I am very happy to let you know about this wonderful ukulele.

It Is Donut Day!

Today is National Donut Day! While I rarely eat these wonderful treats, I do think every day should be a donut day! And, what is a better way to celebrate than with a free donut!!! Visit your local Krispy Kreme and you will receive a free donut - worth celebrating for sure!

If you live near your grandchildren, grab them and go get a donut! After all, National Donut Day is technically only one day a year!
