grandma's cookbook . . . Homemade Heart Mints!

I was browsing on Pinterest this morning and found a recipe for  homemade heart mints . . . they look like they would be great fun to make with grandchildren and certainly would be fun to give to people for Valentine's Day!

Ingredients -
  • 2 lb. powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cube melted butter (1/4 c.)
  • 5-6 tbsp. cold water
  • Mint flavor & coloring
Directions -
  • Put all of the above in large mixing bowl. Mix by hand.
  • Add more sugar or water for desired consistency.
  • Make all one flavor and color or divide into 2 or 3 parts for variety. Takes much more flavoring and much less food coloring than you think.
  • Chill.
  • Roll each color into a ball and place on a cutting board with powdered sugar. Roll out each ball flat until it reaches about 1/4 inch.
  • You want to wait about 10-15 minutes before you cut out your hearts or they will be too soft to handle.
  • Make sure you dip your cookie cutter in powdered sugar
  • The trick to not get the hearts stuck in the cookie cutter is to press down quick and hard. If the mint gets stuck in the cutter, either wait a few minutes longer before continuing or just tap the cookie cutter on the cutting board until your mint comes out.
  • You want to then wait another 10-15 minutes after you’ve cut out your hearts. This makes it super easy to remove the surrounding dough and your hearts will come right out.
  • If you want to add Edible Glitter now’s the time.
  • Place your mints on a cookie sheet and leave out for a few hours.
Enjoy! Once mints are no longer sticky, help your grandchildren decorate containers, place mints in the containers and then give them to people for Valentine's Day! Take time to pray with your grandchildren for the people to whom they give the mints - pray they will come to know God's great love for them, or grow in their love for God! After all, Valentine's Day when we think about love is a great time of year to focus on God's love!
