Don't get me wrong; I love being a mom! I am extremely happy to be blessed with a daughter and a son (and a daughter-in-law) and thankful to be mom! But, being grandma has a very special joy which I believe is, "unique" to being, "grandma" . . . at least it is for me!
When you are "mom", your children see you every day . . . and you see them every day, too! While this is a good thing and a blessing, it can be easy to take each other for granted. This shows up often in the morning "greeting". When our children get up in the morning they do not likely run up to their mom and give her a big hug with their biggest smile on their faces! They do not likely do this saying with pure joy and abandon; "Mom!!!!" However; when my grandchildren were young and spent the night, or when they first saw me when they arrived at my house the greeting went something like this . . . little people ran to me with their arms out, huge smiles on their faces, eyes twinkling while they said; "Grandma!!!!!!" with enthusiasm and great joy! Of course hugs, kisses, and snuggling always follows this greeting!
This of course, does not mean grandchildren love their moms any less than their grandmas, it is just because they do not see their grandmas every day and they do see their moms every day; at least this is my theory!
So, let's be intentional about encouraging our grandchildren to greet their moms with a smile, hug, and kiss each morning as we enjoy being grandma . . . and receiving the greetings, smiles, hugs, and kisses which bring the special joy of being grandma!
