Fun Flower Bucket Hat and I'm Giving Away Yarn!

As I mentioned last week, I've been working on a couple hats for two special young ladies I know and today I want to share the pattern with you . . . I'm also giving enough yarn away to two people so they can each make a hat! More about the give-away in a moment, but first . . . the pattern!

As Christmas approaches I usually make gifts for the people on my list. This year I thought it would be fun to make hats, so I searched the web for patterns. I'm so happy to share a pattern I found for a bucket hat . . . I modified it a bit to work with the yarn I had. This hat is perfect for the girls on your list . . . of any age!

I used Bernat's Handicrafter Cotton yarn - three skeins for each hat, another skein for the flower and heart and a "J" hook. This is the Gumdrop Hat by Jennifer Cirka - you'll find the pattern on I modified it as follows to work with the Handicrafter cotton . . .

  • follow pattern for x-large and add another increase row - Round 10: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, (sc in next 8 sts, 2sc in next st) 6 times. Sl st in beg sc to join - 80sc
  • Rounds 11 - 31 - Ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in each st around. Sl st in beg sc to join.
  • follow pattern for brim for eight rows, increasing as indicated and then finish off with round 26
  • follow pattern for flower and attach wherever you like
  • make a heart as follows - Ch 2
  • Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook
  • Row 2: ch 1, 3 sc in sc
  • Row 3: ch 1, sc in each sc across
  • Row 4: ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc, 2 sc in last sc
  • Row 5: ch 1, sc in first 3 sc, turn
  • Row 6: ch 1, sc two together, sc two together, turn
  • Row 7: ch 1, sc two together, fasten off
  • Row 8: attach yarn in the 3rd stitch in row 4 and repeat rows 5 - 7, fasten off leaving a length to sew heart to hat
This is it! Have fun making these hats for the young ladies in your life! As mentioned above, I'm giving away four skeins of Bernat Handicrafter Cotton Yarn - enough to make one hat in Aloe Vera and one in Fleur De Lavender with Lavender for the flower/hearts!
