grandma's movie review - John Carter - I'm Giving One Away!

This past March, Disney released the story of John Carter. Now, if you didn't know the "back story" to this movie, you may have just written it off as kinda "hokey" and you may have wondered why they didn't set the story on a planet in another galaxy instead of Mars; which we all know is uninhabited. But, if you understand the original story of John Carter was written in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the writer of Tarzan, it helps the movie make sense! In 1912 creating a story about the Martians on the planet Mars makes as much sense as telling a story about aliens from another galaxy would today!

John Carter
By - Disney Studios
Rated - PG13 - for for intense sequences of violence and action

Favorite Features -
  • lots of action and adventure
  • special effects are done very well and make the story "believable"
  • gives grandparents/parents the opportunity to talk with their children about the choices different characters made and important topics such as what to do when you experience grief; how to handle being bullied and when you should stand up for and help others.
John Carter is based on the story of, the Princess of Mars, and as Disney says, "tells the story of war-weary, former military captain, John Carter who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including the captivating princess. In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes the survival of Barsoom and it's people rest in his hands."

If you watch this with your grandchildren/children, be sure to talk with them about why John Carter was so angry and didn't care about anyone after his wife and daughter died. Ask them if they have ever experienced something very sad and what they could do to keep from becoming bitter. Talk with them about how God provides the comfort and strength they need to go through whatever life holds for them.

Also talk about why the "people" on Mars fought for power; talk about characters who showed compassion, standing up for others, helping others and doing what was right as well as those who did not. This movie shows characters who "bullied" others and who were bullied. Ask them  how they would respond if they were characters in the movie.

As I mentioned, Disney not only sent me one movie to review, but another to give away! 1. I heard great things from my friends and horrible things from the critics, so I don't know what to make of John Carter. I'd still like to see it, but I don't know what to expect. Liked and shared on facebook.

  2. I think I want to see this movie.

  3. Thanks for the info! I wish I would have known about the background of the movie before I took my children to see it in theaters. It was a fun time and a visually appealing movie but it would’ve helped to know the motives behind Carter’s actions. I think I will have John Carter mailed out to me through my Blockbuster@Home so I can watch it again with this newfound knowledge. That’s what I love about this service; I get to pick whatever movies I want sent to me through the mail and can watch them whenever I find the time. I can’t even begin to tell you how much this helps because, between working at Dish and a family, the last thing I want to worry about is returning a movie on time. Thanks again. I look forward to future posts!
