crafting with grandma - An Airplane to Make and with which to Play

Magnetic Airplane ClipMy grandsons loves to work on crafts if they are techie or about something with wheels, so, I'm always looking for ideas we can do when they are over here. the single parent: confident and successful - We Are Giving One Away

Last week I had the privilege of reading and reviewing Linda Ranson Jacob's new book, the single parent: confident and successful (you will find my full review at this link). In my review I said; "If you, or your grown child, is a single parent, then clearly Linda's book, the single parent: confident and successful, is an obvious "fit". But, if like me, you are not a single parent and neither are your grown children, do not think this book is not for you - or for them. It absolutely is. As I read this book I learned much about how I will be better able to confidently and successfully hand faith to my grandchildren - and grown children as well. I am very happy to recommend, the single parent: confident and successful, to all parents and grandparents."

Today I am thrilled to let you know, Linda's publisher, BethanyHouse, is making an additional copy of the single parent: confident and successful available for us to give away on Grandmas with Heart!

the single parent: confident and successful - For Us All

Grandmas with Heart is made up of a group of eight grandmas who are committed to handing down the faith to the grandchildren God has gifted to us and then sharing with other grandmas/grandpas/ parents how they may do the same. One of these grandmas is Linda Ranson Jacobs and she has just had her book published by Bethany House. It is my delight today to let you know about this wonderful resource and source of encouragement. I do have to say, have tissues handy as this book is going to touch your heart in deep and powerful ways.

If you, or your grown child, is a single parent, then clearly Linda's book, the single parent: confident and successful, is an obvious "fit". But, if like me, you are not a single parent and neither are your grown children, do not think this book is not for you - or for them. It absolutely is. As I read this book I learned much about how I will be better able to confidently and successfully hand faith to my grandchildren - and grown children as well. I am very happy to recommend, the single parent: confident and successful, to all parents and grandparents.

my first Pop-Up Dinosaurs - Review & Giveaway on July 13, 2019

At my house we are 1/3 of the way through Summer Break - and so far it has been a wonderful Summer Break where I have been blessed to spend a fair amount of time with my sweet grandsons. We are working on reading books this Summer, so I asked Candlewick Press if they might send me a few books to review, and they did. Today I am very happy to let you know about one of these books - and announce a giveaway for it as well.

My grandsons enjoy pop-up books. They are also "fans" of dinosaurs; so a book which combines dinos and pop-ups . . . what could be better! Allow me to share with you - my first Pop-Up Dinosaurs.

Manners from the Manners Mentor

header imageIn this day and age far too often there seems to be a lack of manners. We, however, are able to make the choice to show good manners and teach them to our grandchildren. I have a dear friend, Maralee McKee, who is the Manner's Mentor. Maralee makes manners, "Simple, Savvy and Sincere". She has the answers to all our manners questions and quandaries. She wrote about Bodily Noise Etiquette and has given me permission to repost her sage advice.

grandmas cookbook - Orange Zest Butter Cookies

Orange Butter Cookies with Grand Marnier GlazeWhen it comes to cookies my family tends to favor the "classics" . . . chocolate chip-peanut-butter-oatmeal, plain chocolate chip or plain peanut-butter cookies. But every once in a while I like to try something different and this recipe, which I found on Pinterest, is certainly one I'd like to try! After all, what could be more "yummie" sounding than orange butter cookies?!!!!

Summer Fun - Lawn Twister

I remember the game, "Twister" from when I was a child, so when I was browsing on Pinterest and saw a pin for "Lawn Twister", well, I had to share it with you! All you need is spray paint and something big and round to use as a stencil - this lady used a pizza box lid which she cut into a circle. Check this link for the details and on the next warm summer day when your grandchildren are over, grab some spray paint, a pizza box lid and get ready for some fun they will remember all their lives! (Don't worry, the paint won't hurt your grass and as it grows and you mow it, it will be gone!)

Yes, The Truth Is As Plain As The Nose On Your Face

I heard something the other day which is absolutely true - unless I look in a mirror, or cross-eyed, I am not able to see my own nose. This does not mean my nose is no longer on my face - just I am not able to see it. Others are able to see my nose - it is actually one of the first things we see when we look at people.

This made me think about the old saying, "It's as plain as the nose on your face." Sometimes we think something is not real, not there, because due to whatever is going on in our lives, we do not see what we valued and what was part of us for so long . . . we do not see our own "nose". So, we think our "nose" is not really there - we may even think it was never there, but to others who see our "noses", they are, "as plain as the nose on our face!"

Hot Summer Fun

sponge_water_bombs_HoH_13Today where I live in West Michigan, it is typically supposed to be 80 degrees, but it is not . . . currently, as I write this at 4:30 it is 67. But, eventually it will be warm . . . or at least warmer! When it is warm, what could be more fun than making and playing with sponge bombs! I found this link on Pinterest, but when I tried to follow it to the site with the directions, it told me it had been reported the site had spam, so I found another one for you!

Our Grandchildren Are Meant to Be & We Are Meant to Make a Difference!

Did you know studies show the average child attends church, at best, one hour every other week. This means they are only receiving about 26 hours a year of your church's programming. Yes, I said 26 hours a year! Even the children who are there every week, still only receive about 52 hours a year. I'm sure you agree it is insufficient in either case.

The leaders in your church's Children's Ministry are not able to be with the children you love all the time - this is why God gave the primary responsibility for reaching and discipling children to their parents and grandparents. So, today I want to write about something important. We grandparents must make handing down a heritage of faith to our grandchildren a priority.

Steven Curtis Chapman wrote a song a few years ago called, Meant to Be. I won’t put all of the lyrics here – take a moment to look them up on-line – but I will share a few lines . . .

Summer Fun

As I browsed on Pinterest the other day, I noticed the plans for making a giant outdoor game . . . so I took a closer look! This game looks like it would be great fun for a family to play on a warm summer day! Set it up on a deck, driveway, sidewalk . . . and then have fun all summer long!

Tomorrow is Children's Day - Celebrate!

Tomorrow, Sunday, June 9, 2019, is Children's Day. Before I share a few ideas for celebrating, let's look at a bit of history on Children's Day.

"Children’s Day  observations in the United States predate both Mother’s and Father’s Day. The day to celebrate children dates from the 1860s and earlier. The Methodist Episcopal Church at the Methodist Conference of 1868 recommended the second Sunday in June be observed annually as Children’s Day. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1883 designated the 'the second Sabbath in June as Children’s Day'

Chase’s Calendar of Events cites Children’s Sunday and notes The Commonwealth of Massachusetts issues an annual proclamation for the second Sunday in June.
Numerous churches and denominations currently observe the second Sunday in June including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Church of the Nazarene."

The website - nationalchildrensday.us says; "American families and the entire country need this day to love, evaluate, and commit to the betterment of our children. If you are already planning to enjoy the day celebrating the children you love - go for it! If you have not planned to do anything to celebrate Children's Day, consider the following ideas . . .

Get Your Own Free Kindle Copy of Science, the Bible & Fun!

My grandsons are enjoying the start of their Summer Vacation - I have three happy boys who will be at my house tomorrow. Throughout the Summer, my grandsons will be at my house for at least two days during the week while their parents are at work - and for either their Friday or Saturday night sleepover as well. I am a very blessed grandma.

While I want their Summer break to be a time where they are able to relax, play outside (I live in the country and my house is on a acre, so I have lots of room for them to run and play), there are days when it rains (I live in Michigan and it can be rainy here) and times when they may need help thinking of something to do with their time. It is in times such as these when my book, Science, the Bible & Fun, comes in handy.

UNO Dare & Leave Them Laughing

Recently my husband, myself and our grandsons were introduced to a "new" game; UNO Dare. The "Uno" part of it was not new, but the "Dare" part was . . . and is absolutely a lot of fun!

You play the game the same way as Uno, except when you are given a "draw" card, you are able to choose to instead do a, "dare". These dares are so much fun . . . do the chicken dance, talk like a pirate, walk like a robot, hold absolutely still until your next turn, say "hip-pity hop" at the end of every sentence until your next turn, etc. The dares leave you - and everyone with whom you are playing - laughing, a lot and puts so much additional fun into the game of Uno.

Be Steadfast About Handing Down Your Faith

Psalm 103:17 tells us; “But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children.
This is the message we in the church want to make known… God’s love is steadfast from everlasting to everlasting for those who turn to and fear Him. It is also a message which encourages grandparents. God’s righteousness is for our children’s children.

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - God Made You Unique & Oh, So Valuable

The month of May is National Mental Health Month, so I want to write today about something very, very important. Suicide. I was shocked to learn suicide is the second leading cause of death in the United States for children, youth and young adults ages ten - 34. Yes, this statistic included children as young as ten. I have a grandson who is ten.

This got my attention; and I assume it has your attention as well.

Build Strong Bonds

Yesterday I was able to take my grandsons to church with me. I was sitting in the area where the children are checked in to the Children's Ministry at my church and had the opportunity to notice several grandmas with their grandchildren. It was abundantly clear the grandmas love their grandchildren and I was so happy to see the love mirrored back to their grandmas in the eyes of the grandchildren.

These Memories are a Treasure

There are many things people in the world consider to be "treasure" . . . gold, money, jewels, etc. But for me, I treasure people and memories. I consider the people in my life to be gifts from the hand of God . . . especially my family. My grandsons often spend the night at my home and a few years ago, when they were at my house, we had a conversation about how they are treasure to me; gifts from the hand of God. They have heard this at least a time or two :^) so on this occasion, my oldest grandson said, "I know! I'm your treasure!" I want my grandsons to grow up knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt their grandma treasures them!

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - God Has So Graciously Forgiven Us

The world in which we live is not always quick to show and offer forgiveness. People seem to want to see others, "get what is coming to them". But, God has so graciously forgiven us, so we have the wonderful opportunity to help our grandchildren understand what forgiveness is all about. As we model forgiveness to them, we will find we have the perfect opportunity to talk with them about how God forgives them and how they are able to forgive others as well. Consider this Mystery Bag Project to help your grandchildren learn about forgiveness.

You will need . . .
