Tell the "Whys" - God Makes Sense

I love the Okapi - it is one of the most unique animals God created. It looks from the backside like a strange Zebra, but is actually more closely related to the Giraffe. It does have a long neck and a prehensile tongue, like the Giraffe, but it is a unique creature all its own.

The Okapi is only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo; it lives deep in the rain forest and is so shy, we didn't even know for sure it was a real creature until 1901. Okapi do not live in herds, they are solitary creatures and are considered extremely tasty by its neighbors - the leopard and people from the DRC.

So, how do we still have any Okapi in the world today? They do something extremely unique - they communicate with infrasonic calls . . . leopards and people are not able to hear these beautiful animals communicate, so the mama Okapi and able to "talk" to their babies in safety.

Just for Fun - Did You Know . . .

It has been a while since I shared some, "Just for Fun" strange, but true, facts, so I thought I'd share a few more with you today!  Did you know . . .

Salted Caramel Lollipops

I thought it would be fun and "Fall-ish" to share with you a tasty recipe for Salted Caramel Lollipops!!!

The recipe is pretty simple, although it does take some stirring. Just follow this link and you'll find an ingredient list and complete directions. I did have to make a couple corrections . . . when you add the cream and butter to the sugar mixture, you need to bring it back to 300 degrees, not 260 - it makes a HUGE difference. And, you need to continually stir for this final cook time.

Help Please!

My grandsons and I have been working on a project - my first reason for this project was to help them learn to pray the Psalms. My second reason for it was to develop a resource, a tool for other grandmas (and grandpas and parents, too) to use to help their grandchildren - preschool through middle school - learn to pray the Psalms as well.

The project is almost complete. When it is there will be 52 weeks of prayers for children to pray from the Psalms. The passages match the passages in Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Grandparents & Parents, Too! (Formally known as Deeper In 4 Grandparents & Parents, Too! Praying the Psalms for the Children You Love).

It is Cheese Pizza Day!

Oh yes, Cheese Pizza Day . . . certainly a day worth celebrating, so in honor of this tasty day, I'm re-posting a recipe I shared back when I began grandma's cookie jar for homemade, personal pizzas!

Just follow this link and you'll find the complete recipe . . . as I said back then, this is a recipe which is "pretty straightforward, but it is one your grandchildren can literally "get their hands into" and really help prepare a meal for the family to enjoy! Top baked pizza crusts with whatever toppings you like - each grandchild may top their own pizza with their favorite toppings - each one is likely to be unique . . . just like the person who made it! Bake again for about seven minutes and enjoy!"

grandma's cookbook - Fluffly Rolls

Mmmm! I love rolls! Fresh from the oven, soft, with butter melting on them . . . what could be more enjoyable? As a child, one of my favorite parts of Thanskgiving dinner was knowing I was going to be able to enjoy a couple of my grandma's rolls! So, as I browsed on Pinterest the other day, I noticed a recipe for rolls. The picture alone was enough to put a smile on my face! I'm planning to  make these in a couple weeks for my oldest grandson's birthday - his choice of menu, but I thought I'd go ahead and share the recipe with you today!

Summer Fun . . . Ice Eggs!

Ice EggsI found an idea on Pinterest which sounds like so much fun for the next hot summer day . . . Ice Eggs! So . . . what, you ask, are ice eggs? Well, they are "eggs" you make with water in balloons which you then freeze! What might you possibly do with ice eggs, you also ask? Well . . . apparently there are lots of things you can do with ice eggs . . . including playing games such as "ice bowling" and you can freeze "surprises" in them for your grandchildren to discover!

grandma's cookbook . . . Ice Cream on a Stick!

Ice Cream Scoop on a Stick

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - God's "Explosive" Joy

It has been a busy summer - my grandsons spend the day at my house on the days when both their parents are at work - and there have been many of these days. I am a happy grandma.

But, this has meant less time for posts. Today I want to share a post with you which I originally posted to my other blog - Grandmas with Heart - earlier this week.

My grandsons have been at my house for the past four days for our yearly, "Days of Fun". Yesterday we did, "Will it Explode/Make a Mess" and the boys tried the Diet Coke/Mentos experiment, Elephant Toothpaste experiment and the exploding Watermelon (using rubberbands) experiment, and yes, a mess was made in all three experiments!

We are talking about how these experiments remind us of how when we make the choice to love, know and walk with God, our lives will have many surprises and His joy will flow - or explode - out of us!

If you would like to try any of these experiments with your grandchildren, you will need the following supplies . . .

the single parent: confident and successful - We Are Giving One Away

Last week I had the privilege of reading and reviewing Linda Ranson Jacob's new book, the single parent: confident and successful (you will find my full review at this link). In my review I said; "If you, or your grown child, is a single parent, then clearly Linda's book, the single parent: confident and successful, is an obvious "fit". But, if like me, you are not a single parent and neither are your grown children, do not think this book is not for you - or for them. It absolutely is. As I read this book I learned much about how I will be better able to confidently and successfully hand faith to my grandchildren - and grown children as well. I am very happy to recommend, the single parent: confident and successful, to all parents and grandparents."

Today I am thrilled to let you know, Linda's publisher, BethanyHouse, is making an additional copy of the single parent: confident and successful available for us to give away on Grandmas with Heart!

the single parent: confident and successful - For Us All

Grandmas with Heart is made up of a group of eight grandmas who are committed to handing down the faith to the grandchildren God has gifted to us and then sharing with other grandmas/grandpas/ parents how they may do the same. One of these grandmas is Linda Ranson Jacobs and she has just had her book published by Bethany House. It is my delight today to let you know about this wonderful resource and source of encouragement. I do have to say, have tissues handy as this book is going to touch your heart in deep and powerful ways.

If you, or your grown child, is a single parent, then clearly Linda's book, the single parent: confident and successful, is an obvious "fit". But, if like me, you are not a single parent and neither are your grown children, do not think this book is not for you - or for them. It absolutely is. As I read this book I learned much about how I will be better able to confidently and successfully hand faith to my grandchildren - and grown children as well. I am very happy to recommend, the single parent: confident and successful, to all parents and grandparents.

At my house we are 1/3 of the way through Summer Break - and so far it has been a wonderful Summer Break where I have been blessed to spend a fair amount of time with my sweet grandsons. Today I am very happy to let you know about one of these books - and announce a giveaway for it as well.

Manners from the Manners Mentor

header imageIn this day and age far too often there seems to be a lack of manners. We, however, are able to make the choice to show good manners and teach them to our grandchildren. I have a dear friend, Maralee McKee, who is the Manner's Mentor. Maralee makes manners, "Simple, Savvy and Sincere". She has the answers to all our manners questions and quandaries. She wrote about Bodily Noise Etiquette and has given me permission to repost her sage advice.

grandmas cookbook - Orange Zest Butter Cookies

Orange Butter Cookies with Grand Marnier GlazeWhen it comes to cookies my family tends to favor the "classics" . . . chocolate chip-peanut-butter-oatmeal, plain chocolate chip or plain peanut-butter cookies. But every once in a while I like to try something different and this recipe, which I found on Pinterest, is certainly one I'd like to try! After all, what could be more "yummie" sounding than orange butter cookies?!!!!

Summer Fun - Lawn Twister

I remember the game, "Twister" from when I was a child, so when I was browsing on Pinterest and saw a pin for "Lawn Twister", well, I had to share it with you! All you need is spray paint and something big and round to use as a stencil - this lady used a pizza box lid which she cut into a circle. Check this link for the details and on the next warm summer day when your grandchildren are over, grab some spray paint, a pizza box lid and get ready for some fun they will remember all their lives! (Don't worry, the paint won't hurt your grass and as it grows and you mow it, it will be gone!)

Yes, The Truth Is As Plain As The Nose On Your Face

I heard something the other day which is absolutely true - unless I look in a mirror, or cross-eyed, I am not able to see my own nose. This does not mean my nose is no longer on my face - just I am not able to see it. Others are able to see my nose - it is actually one of the first things we see when we look at people.

This made me think about the old saying, "It's as plain as the nose on your face." Sometimes we think something is not real, not there, because due to whatever is going on in our lives, we do not see what we valued and what was part of us for so long . . . we do not see our own "nose". So, we think our "nose" is not really there - we may even think it was never there, but to others who see our "noses", they are, "as plain as the nose on our face!"

Hot Summer Fun

sponge_water_bombs_HoH_13Today where I live in West Michigan, it is typically supposed to be 80 degrees, but it is not . . . currently, as I write this at 4:30 it is 67. But, eventually it will be warm . . . or at least warmer! When it is warm, what could be more fun than making and playing with sponge bombs! I found this link on Pinterest, but when I tried to follow it to the site with the directions, it told me it had been reported the site had spam, so I found another one for you!

Our Grandchildren Are Meant to Be & We Are Meant to Make a Difference!

Did you know studies show the average child attends church, at best, one hour every other week. This means they are only receiving about 26 hours a year of your church's programming. Yes, I said 26 hours a year! Even the children who are there every week, still only receive about 52 hours a year. I'm sure you agree it is insufficient in either case.

The leaders in your church's Children's Ministry are not able to be with the children you love all the time - this is why God gave the primary responsibility for reaching and discipling children to their parents and grandparents. So, today I want to write about something important. We grandparents must make handing down a heritage of faith to our grandchildren a priority.

Steven Curtis Chapman wrote a song a few years ago called, Meant to Be. I won’t put all of the lyrics here – take a moment to look them up on-line – but I will share a few lines . . .

Summer Fun

As I browsed on Pinterest the other day, I noticed the plans for making a giant outdoor game . . . so I took a closer look! This game looks like it would be great fun for a family to play on a warm summer day! Set it up on a deck, driveway, sidewalk . . . and then have fun all summer long!

Happy Children's Day!

It is Children's Day - celebrate the children you love! Let them know how very much you love them and how they make your family complete. Tell them God knew what He was doing when He put them in your family - and you are ever so thankful He did!

And, Children's Day is the perfect time for you to recommit to be purposeful when it comes to handing down the faith - it is what matters!

Happy Children's Day!
