grandma's cookbook . . . Peanut-Butter Balls!

If you are looking for a recipe for a treat which is beyond enjoyable . . . these peanut-butter balls are for you! I made them for Dave 30 years ago and within a month and a half, he proposed to me! :^) Wonderful things happen when you make these peanut-butter balls for people! :^) Yes, the video is of the mountain/volcano where Dave and I met, and where he proposed to me - Mt. Lassen - enjoy this little, "One minute vacation"!

Ingredients -

  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1 lb powdered sugar
  • 2 cups peanut-butter
  • 3 cups rice crispies cereal
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup solid shortening
  • 1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions -
  • mix butter, sugar and peanut-butter then add the cereal and shape into 1 inch balls
  • melt butter, shortening and chocolate chips, stirring so it is smooth - be careful not to overcook or scorch chocolate - a double boiler is very helpful in this step
  • dip each peanut-butter ball into chocolate and set on waxed paper to set (I usually put them in the freezer at this point and then keep them in the freezer - they are particularly enjoyable frozen!)
This is another fun recipe to make with your grandchildren! Talk with them about how the peanut-butter balls are a sweet treat and share with them some of the sweet "treats" God has blessed your life with. Lead them in praising God for His amazing goodness to us. Ask your grandchildren to think of someone you could "treat" with a gift of some of the peanut-butter balls. Help them make a box or bag to put them in and then take them to give a neighbor or shut-in this sweet treat (be sure they do not have a peanut allergy).

grandma's bookshelf - Duck at the Door

Each of us, our grandchildren included, will have to, at one time or another, deal with people who are difficult to get along with. I love this book from Jackie Urbanovic about Max, the duck who is annoying to his housemates, and how he then becomes a missed member of the family!

Duck at the Door
Author/Illustrator - Jackie Urbanovic
Publisher - Harper Collins
Ages 4-7
  • Favorite Features -
    • fun, unexpected story sure to get children and parents talking about how to get along with others
    • colorful illustrations - great characters children and adults will love!

Excellent book for families to read and talk about - important lessons about how we treat others and how we show love and grace to others . . . even to difficult people. As you read this book with your grandchildren, talk with them about how they treat others . . . are they a "Max"? Do they "hog" the blanket and remote and insist others do things their way? How do they treat a "Max"? Talk with them about how Jesus wants us to show grace to others and help them think of ways they might respond with grace to the "Max" in their life!

"Can I Share With Jesus?"

Josiah is a wonderful "sharer" . . . he happily shares what he has with anyone! Yesterday he shared some teddy grahams with Poppa and momma and I said, "I'm so happy to see you share! Do you know Who you make happy when you share?" Josiah said, "Yes, you!" I smiled and said, "Yes, when you share it makes me happy, but do you know Who else it makes happy?" He pointed at his momma and I said, "Yes, but do you know Who else it makes happy?" He pointed at his poppa. I said, "Yes, but do you know Who else is happy when you share?" He pointed at his daddy and his Aunt Tiffy. I said, "Yes, but do you know Who else is happy when you share?" He looked confused as he had pointed at everyone else in the room. I said, "When you share it makes Jesus happy, too!" Josiah said, "Can I share with Jesus?" I told him when he shares with others, he is sharing with Jesus!

We want our grandchildren to grow up to be people who are tenderhearted and who are happy to share with others, so start them young! When Josiah has a snack or a treat at out house we encourage him to share with daddy, momma, poppa or whoever else is around. We tell him sharing makes our hearts happy and we tell him it makes Jesus happy when we share! This is just one simple thing we can do to help him grow up to be a person who cares about others!

Our God is an Awesome God!

Summer is nearly over and school either has begun or will be starting within a week for our grandchildren. Some children look forward to their return to school, and others dread it. Some children have teachers who point their attention to our Amazing God, while others do not. As your grandchildren return to school, plan to take a moment to sit down with them and encourage them with the truth, our God is an awesome God!

Oh when He rolls up his sleeves He ain't just puttin' on the ritz, Our God is an awesome God
There is thunder in his footsteps and lightning in his fists Our God is an awesome God And the Lord wasn't joking when He kicked 'em out of Eden It wasn't for no reason that He shed his blood His return is very soon and so you'd better be believin' that Our God is an awesome God

Our God is an awesome God He reigns from heaven above with wisdom, pow'r and love Our God is an awesome God

And when the sky was starless in the void of the night Our God is an awesome God He spoke into the darkness and created the light Our God is an awesome God And judgment and wrath He poured out on Sodom Mercy and grace He gave us at the cross I hope that we have not too quickly forgotten that Our God is an awesome God

Our God is an awesome God He reigns from heaven above with wisdom, pow'r and love Our God is an awesome God

Our God really did just speak all of creation into being and He did lavish His mercy and grace on us at the cross. We need to remember our God is an Awesome God! He does reign from heaven above with wisdom, power and love! Commit to encourage your grandchildren and pray for them as the begin another year of school!

Manners For Our Grandchildren

I'm very happy to report Josiah is growing up to be a polite young man! It is very obvious his parents have invested the time in teaching him to show good manners. We were playing on my porch the other day and I burped - quietly - and said, "Excuse me!" Josiah said, "You are excused!" He is very quick to say, please, thank you and you're welcome! Last night when we were at McDonalds, I asked him if he was going to eat any more of his chicken nuggets, he said, "Certainly!" He is so polite . . . and very cute in his politeness!

In this day and age far too often there seems to be a lack of manners. We, however; can make the choice to show good manners and teach them to our grandchildren. I have a dear friend, Maralee McKee, who is the Manner's Mentor! Maralee makes manners, "Simple, Savvy and Sincere!" She has the answers to all our manners questions and quandaries! She wrote about Bodily Noise Etiquette and has given me permission to repost her sage advice!

Saving Those Treasures!

Thursday my grandson Josiah (nearly three years old) visited. As he walked up to my house, he saw me standing on the steps . . . he ran, with a huge smile and said, "grandma! I have a picture for you! I made you a picture!" He gave me a wonderful hug and handed me his artwork - it was a drawing of a red truck and a heart . . . I know this because when he draws, he tells us what he is drawing and then asks us to write it down! We put it on my refrigerator. I love his picture and will treasure it always!

I'm sure you have similar stories of your grandchildren sharing their art creations with you! Consider the following idea for a way to keep your treasures so you are able to enjoy them for years to come . . .
  • scan the artwork into your computer and then use them as a "picture" in a photo book - if you use Mixbook with this link you will be able to get 20% off your first order using the following code - RVSRCE20
  • add photos of your grandchildren for a book you will treasure!
  • compose the text to match your pages - be sure to write anything special your grandchild said about their artwork so along with saving the artwork, you will be saving the memory of what they had to say about their artwork!
  • when your book arrives, enjoy it with your grandchildren . . . and everyone who comes to your house! :^)
Photo books are a wonderful way to save your cherished treasures and memories!

It is so important for us as grandmas to remember Who God Is. He is Indescribable, Uncontainable, He placed the stars in the sky and He knows them by name! God is All powerful and untameable and even though He sees the depth of our hearts, He still loves us! All we can do is fall to our knees awestruck, and humbly proclaim; God is Amazing!

As we spend time with our grandchildren, we need to remember Who God Is so we can point our grandchildren to Him. Point out the colors of fall, the fragrance of spring. Share your wonder at the glory of the highest heights of God's creation and the incredible sights in the depths of His seas! When you look at the stars, share your amazement of God's indescribable creation! In the next thunder storm or a snow storm this winter, share how they show our amazing God is All Powerful! And His most wondrous creation . . . your grandchildren! Share with them how they are such an amazing gift from the hand our our Amazing, Indescribable, Uncontainable God and most importantly, how great and unimaginable is His love for them!

Great Music With a Point - Go Fish Guys - I Love to Tell the Story/Sweet Sweet Song of Salvation!

There is no shortage of excellent music available for your grandchildren to listen to, but one group which is, in my opinion, an absolute "must-have" is Go Fish Guys. Check out their song, I Love to Tell the Story/Sweet Sweet Song of Salvation and you will see what I mean!

This song has a solid message and spunk - the perfect combination! Kids, and adults, will be singing this song - it is sure to be a favorite!

Check it out and consider having it available for your grandchildren to listen to - and sing to - when they are at your house! Be sure to talk with them about the message of the song - Jesus' love and how we can be forgiven and then how we can share the sweet, sweet song of salvation with others!

grandma's cookbook - Super Simple and Yummy Lasagna

Many people have their favorite go-to recipe for lasagna . . . some are very simple and others are not, but for many people lasagna is one of our favorite "comfort" foods! As the days become cooler, lasagna is a wonderful dish to make . . . it is always better as leftovers! Try this recipe the next time you make lasagna -

Ingredients -

  • 10 lasagna noodles - you could use whole wheat noodles or make half your noodles thinly sliced and roasted eggplant
  • 1lb ground beef
  • 1 can of tomato sauce - or spaghetti sauce
  • mozzarella cheese - shredded
  • sharp cheddar cheese - shredded
  • optional - replace the ground beef with broccoli
  • optional add onions, mushrooms, and any other veggies you might enjoy
Directions -
  • cook your lasagna noodles according to the directions on the box
  • pour your tomato sauce into a pan, add ground beef, stir together so ground beef is in small pieces and cook until beef is completely cooked
  • if you are using the broccoli in place of the ground beef, cook in the microwave for six minutes, add to the sauces and proceed replacing the broccoli for the beef
  • when noodles and beef are cooked, layer five noodles on the bottom of your pan, top with half your meat sauce, top with half your mozzarella cheese and about 1/2 cup of cheddar (if you are adding mushrooms, onions, etc, do so now)
  • repeat layer
  • bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until cheese is bubbly
  • allow to stand for five to ten minutes, serve and enjoy!
Lasagna is a great dish to have your grandchildren help prepare - they can add the cheese and help with layering. Talk with them about the different ingredients and lead them in thanking God for creating such wonderful, and delicious, things for us to eat!

The Berenstain Bears: Here's the Church, Here's the Steeple (Berenstain Bears/Living Lights)One such wonderful story is a very familiar one we all likely grew up with . . . with a new "touch"! "Praise, Tell, Rejoice and Sing!"

The Grandmother's BibleIf you've been reading grandma's cookie jar for very long, you know I love the Grandmother's Bible from Zondervan. I love how it helps focus my thoughts and prayer for my grandchildren . . . it really does "nourish grandmothers to nurture grandchildren!" Today's devotional was written by Bobbie Wolgemuth and focused on Psalm 9. She said there is a great "I Will" activity list to remember when we spend time with our grandchild . . . "first, begin with an attitude of praise. Tell the Lord what you are thankful for. Count your blessings; name them. Your heart will be full and running over with the kind of attitude which pleases God and spills over on the young ones with the love of the Savior. Second, tell the kids what God has done in the past. Everyday miracles fill our memory banks. Pull a few past marvels out of your memory treasure chest and tell your grandchild of the Lord's wonders. Third, be a happy grandmother. Let your face show the gladness of the Lord. Your inside joy should envelop your grandchildren with every encounter, no matter where you are. The fourth 'I will" - sing with your grandchildren. Leave a song in their hearts. It will bring them truth and comfort and peace for a lifetime."

This devotional ends with a prayer - "Lord Jesus, I want to be the kind of grandmother who encourages others. Help me today to do Your will by remembering the four 'I Will: statements in Psalm 9. I want to praise, tell, rejoice and sing. Amen." Can you see why I love the Grandmother's Bible?!!! Let's be sure our hearts are full, running over and spilling over on our grandchildren with the love of Jesus!

grandma's chuckles:^) . . . "It's Bigfoot! Run For Your Lives!"

My grandson Josiah - nearly three years old - was over to my home last night and he said something which will have me laughing for a very long time! We watched the Goofy Movie; when Bigfoot showed up, Josiah said, "It's Bigfoot! Run for your lives!" and ran into our dining room, around the table and into the kitchen saying, "Run for your lives!" Poppa got up and ran with him - for his "life", of course, but I was laughing too hard to run for my life (and I was holding a sleeping Caleb - nearly one month old).

Children are such a gift and they bring such joy to our lives! As you go through your day today, if you have the opportunity to spend time with your grandchildren - enjoy it! If not, then be sure to spend some time thanking God for the gift of your grandchildren and ask Him to help them know and walk with Him all their lives.

grandma's chuckles:^) - "When I Blow On It, It Spins . . . See!"

Are you grandchildren big enough to talk on the phone to you? Well, Josiah is almost three and he was in the mood to talk to me on the phone today! While we talked he said, "I have a pinwheel! When I blow on it, it spins . . . see!" and then I heard a blowing sound! This little boy makes my heart happy! As your grandchildren say and do things which make your heart happy, be sure to write down what they said/did . . . each time you go back and read your heart will be happy all over again!

grandma's bookshelf - the 39 Clues

Vespers Rising (The 39 Clues, Book 11)If you have a grandchild who is in upper elemenatry or jr high, then they  have likely been reading the 39 Clues books. Scholastic has this to say about the 39 Clues - "The 39 Clues series centers around the Cahills—the most powerful family the world has ever known. But the source of the family's power has been lost. Grace Cahill, the last matriarch of the Cahills, changed her will minutes before she died, leaving her descendants an impossible decision: receive a million dollars or a clue. The first Cahill to assemble all 39 clues hidden around the world will discover what makes the family so powerful—a reward beyond measure. It's Cahill versus Cahill in a race to the finish, with readers hot on the heels of the main characters, fourteen-year-old Amy Cahill and her eleven-year-old brother, Dan."

The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers Book 1: The Medusa PlotScholastic explains their new series, Cahills vs Vespers as follows; "Thirteen-year-old Dan Cahill and his older sister, Amy, thought they belonged to the world's most powerful family. They thought the hunt for 39 Clues leading to the source of that power was over. They even thought they'd won. But Amy and Dan were wrong. One by one, distress calls start coming in from around the globe. Cahills are being kidnapped by a shadowy group known only as the Vespers. Now Amy and Dan have only days to fulfill a bizarre ransom request or their captured friends will start dying. Amy and Dan don't know what the Vespers want or how to stop them. Only one thing is clear. The Vespers are playing to win, and if they get their hands on the Clues . . . the world will be their next hostage." This series has captured the imagination of children and has them even signing up to be on their school library's waiting lists to get each book in the series so they can read them.

grandma's cookbook - Slow-cooker Pork Loin with Fruit

If you are looking for a recipe for pork loin which you can take a few minutes to prepare and then just "let it go" . . . this is for you! I love to fix this for Sunday dinner - when we get home from church it is all ready . . . and the house smells amazing!

Ingredients -

  • center cut half boneless pork loin - about 4 pounds or so
  • apples - four, cut, cored and quartered
  • 1/2 cup blueberries, cherries or cranberries
Directions -
  • trim the fat on your pork loin and place in your slow-cooker
  • cut, core and quarter your apples and place around the pork loin in the slow-cooker
  • add fruit of your choice
  • add 3/4 cup water
  • cover and cook on low overnight or for approximately four to five hours
You will find this pork loin to be sooo tender and flavorful! Remove apples and discard - allow pork loin to rest for 15 minutes before you slice. Serve with mashed potatoes - you could make gravy with the broth - veggies and enjoy!

If you have your grandchildren help you prepare the pork loin, lead them in praying for the people who will enjoy this meal and thank them for their help!

grandma's bookshelf - Crash at Cannibal Valley, Terror in Branco Grande and Disaster in the Yukon

Sometimes it can be difficult to get elementary age children - particularly boys - to develop an interest in reading. And often, the books available for the age level are not the books you'd want your grandchildren reading. However, there are some excellent books which they will not only fully enjoy reading, but which will also fill their minds with the things you want them to be thinking about!

  • adventure stories about a family who helps missionaries and those in need around the world
  • solid messages about family, trusting God and caring about others
Excellent series to introduce children to adventure stories as these stories will leave your grandchildren wanting to read! Grandchildren, and grandparents, will not be able to put these books down - they are great books for you to read together, but be warned, your grandchildren will want you read another chapter and another chapter, etc! As you read talk with your grandchildren about the choices the characters in the stories made and encourage your grandchildren to get involved in a project to help people in need around the world - such as the project with World Vision to provide clean water for those in need!
