Amaze Your Grandchildren With This Fun Activity!

Grandmas should be able to "amaze" their grandchildren from time to time - don't you agree? :-) Josiah and Caleb were at my house for a few hours yesterday, so while Caleb napped, I showed Josiah a simple piece of paper and asked him if he believed I could cut a hole in it big enough for him to walk through. He looked at it, then at me and said, "No. I do not think you can do that." I said, "Hmmm . . . well, we will see because I can!"

I then made a few cuts and had him lift one corner . . . the look on his face was priceless when he discovered the paper was now big enough for him - and me to fit through! He said, "Okay!!! THAT AMAZED me!!! I did not think you could do that!!!" I'm a happy grandma - it isn't every day you get to AMAZE your grandchildren!!!

Summer Reading - Andi Unexpected

It can be a big challenge to find quality stories for middle-graders . . . so many books tend to turn to the strange, bizarre and scary which leaves few options for your nine to thirteen year old grandchildren. So, when I had the opportunity to review a new book I wasn't sure if it would be more of the same, or worse, a story which didn't capture the imagination. I am so happy to say I loved this book and highly recommend it to you for your middle-grade grandchildren!

Thank You for Praying!

I just received a notice saying Darnell Anderson has been found - thank you for praying! I don't have any additional information, but want to thank you all for praying!

Today is International Day of Friendship

Yes, apparently, today is International Day of Friendship. While it is a day set aside by the UN to further, "the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities and places particular emphasis on involving young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity."

Certainly we all can encourage friendships, inspire peace efforts and build bridges as we strive to understand and respect others.

I want to take this moment on this day to thank you all; you are my friends here on grandma's cookie jar and I consider you all to be blessings from the hand of God! I am so tremendously thankful for each of you and cherish your friendships! So, happy friendship day! :-)

crafting with grandma - Platypus in a Fedora Hat!

My grandsons are huge fans of a certain turquoise blue platypus in a brown fedora! Did I say, "huge"? I should have said, "HUGE!!!" :-) So, as I thought about the hats I wanted to make for them this year for Christmas, it was pretty obvious I needed to make them platypus in a fedora hats. I found a pattern on line which got me started, then "tweaked" it a bit, added a "bill" and changed the eyes from being angry - almost scary - to having a "classic" "Perry" look!

Kids Music DVDBy now you have likely caught on how much I - and my grandson - love Go Fish . . . their songs have "spunk" . . . they are the ones my grandsons jump right up and start dancing to! Along with being fun, the message of these songs are the messages I want in their sweet, little heads! grandma's cookbook - Mmmm . . . Salted Caramel Lollipops!!!

As I looked for lollipop recipes this morning, I came across another one which I have to share with you . . . Salted Caramel Lollipops!!!

The recipe looks pretty simple and since I just bought some pink Himalayan Salt, I thought this recipe would be a delightful way to try it out!!! Just follow this link and you'll find an ingredient list and complete directions - I'm definitely making these tomorrow!!!

So, what do you think? Does this sound like something you might make?

grandma's cookbook - Homemade Lollipops!

Lemon Honey Lollipops for soothing throats. I am going to make these for the children. Sometime lemon and honey tea is hard to get them to drink. My grandsons LOVE lollipops, so I bought a large bag of them so when they visited they could enjoy one - or two - or three - now and then! But, then we discovered they had Red #40 in them, so I had to throw them away. I won't write this post about the dangers of Red #40, but will say there does seem to be evidence it effects the brains of children and causes hyperactivity - leading to children mistakenly being diagnosed with ADHD. (You can read more about it at this link if you like.)
Rock Candy {Tutorial}
I have been careful to read labels and if something has Red #40 - I do not buy it. Which makes it really difficult to find lollipops for two sweet boys I love. So, I looked on Pinterest and found a recipe for making lollipops (check this link for the recipe)! I also found one for Rock Candy (check this link for the recipe) - I'm going to try both of these to see if I can make lollipops the boys can enjoy . . . without it making their brains go "berserk"!

Ari Has Been Found - Thank You For Praying!

I am so happy to let you know little Ari has been found! Apparently he was asleep in a closet the whole time . . . family and police previously looked in the closet for him, but did not see him.

Thank you for praying - I'm so glad this time the missing child was found unharmed!

Just for Fun . . . Misspelled Words, Flutterbys and More!

It has been a while since I shared some, "Just for Fun" strange, but true, facts, so I thought I'd share a few more with you today!  Did you know . . .

grandma's movie review - Dragons: Riders of Berk Parts 1 & 2

In 2010 we were all delighted with the release of the movie, How to Train Your Dragon. Not only was the animation top notch, but the story was extremely well written and one which pulled you in from the start and kept you enjoying every moment. When it ended, I hoped for a sequel! While we have to wait another year for How to Train Your Dragon 2, we can enjoy Dragons: Riders of Berk - Part 1 and Dragons: Riders of Berk - Part 2 in the meantime - and enjoy them is something we absolutely will do!!!

grandma's cookbook - Oreo & Fudge Ice Cream Cake

OREO & Fudge Ice Cream CakeAs I browsed the Kraft recipes to look for the Blueberry Lemon Refrigerator Pie recipe, I came across a recipe which left me with only one word I could say . . . WOW!!!!! Chocolate pudding, Cool Whip (although I think you could easily substitute real whipping cream in this recipe), Oreos, Chocolate Fudge topping and Ice Cream Sandwiches . . . mix all together and you have a dessert which will leave everyone who eats it saying, "WOW!!!!"

grandma's cookbook - Blueberry Lemon Refrigerator Pie!

Blueberry Refrigerator Pie recipeI love lemons! I love blueberries! And, I most certainly LOVE whipped cream!!! So, what do you get when you combine all of these with a  cookie crust? Pure happiness, for sure!

Summer Reading - Stick!

Around this grandma's house there is no shortage of books for my grandsons and when I get new books in for review . . . my supply of books definitely grows! When the boys were at my house this weekend, I decided to let them have one I was pretty sure they would love . . . and they did! This book is so much fun . . . even though it only has seven words in the book!

Today is National Ice Cream Day!!!! Enjoy!!!!

Yes, today, July 21st, is National Ice Cream Day!!! What an absolutely fabulous day to have!!! I most certainly will be "celebrating" such a wonderful day! Please Pray for the Safe Return of Daphne Webb

Please be praying and watching for a missing baby girl from Oakland, California. Daphne Webb is one year old, two feet tall and weighs 30 pounds. She was last seen on July 10, 2013 when her dad left her in his car with his elderly mother while he went into a store to get an energy drink. He said when he returned the little girl was gone. The grandmother, 87, has dementia and was unable to help police in their investigation.

grandma's chuckles . . . We Do NOT Want to Pee in the Pool, Boring Prayers and "Ga"!

A few days ago, during our "Four Days of Fun", we were getting ready to get in the pool and I told Josiah to go use the potty before he got his swimsuit on. He asked me why and I said, "Because you don't want to get in the pool and then need to use the potty. We for sure do not want to pee in the pool because that would be like swimming in a potty." Josiah looked at me and said, "We would NOT want to pee in the pool because that WOULD be like swimming in the potty and that would be DISGUSTING!!!" I'm so glad we are on the same page when it comes to peeing in the pool! :-)

Summer Reading - Peck, Peck, Peck

What do you think a little woodpecker would do when it discovers how much it absolutely loves, loves, loves, loves, loves, LOVES to peck? Well, read this book with your grandchildren about Little Woodpecker and you'll discover how once he starts to peck, he just can't stop!

Ready for a Summer Snowball Fight??? :-)

Across the country it is hot . . . even here in Michigan where Summer took so long to arrive! :-) So, as I thought about what I should post today on grandma's cookie jar, I thought it might be fun to share all the specifics I found on Pinterest for how to have a "Summer Snowball Fight"!

Summer Reading - Little Owl Lost

Last year I shared a review of a book I just loved - Oh No, George!, so when I had the opportunity to review a new book by the same author, I was very happy to do so!

Free Fun for Grandchildren!

As you know, I recently had, "Four Days of Fun" with my grandsons when they stayed with us for a few days while their parents took a short trip. One of the fun things we did was to go visit our local fire department. If you are looking for something fun and interesting you can do with your grandchildren, take them to visit your local fire department!

Summer Reading - How to Make Friends and Monsters - I'm Giving One Away!

I've been sharing great books with you which you could read to and with your grandchildren this summer, but most of them are for younger children. So, I'm very happy to share a book which your older grandchildren (ages 9+) will be able to read, enjoy (I actually laughed out loud at chapter 33 when I read it) and even learn from . . . plus, I'm giving one away!

Please Pray for Ahlitta's Family

It is with extreme sadness I have to let you know the body of 6 year old Ahlitta North has been found in a dumpster near her home in Louisiana. Please keep this family in your prayers.

Four Days of Fun . . . Definitely Fun!!!

Yesterday was day four in my, "Four Days of Fun" with my grandsons and yes, we most certainly had four days of fun!!! We did science projects, swam in the pool, played in water, swam in the pool, visited a local fire department, swam in the pool, discovered the joys of water balloons, swam in the pool, made tie-dye shirts, swam in the pool, had a pancake eating contest, swam in the pool . . . did I mention we swam in the pool?? :-) Both boys are huge "fans" of swimming in the pool!

grandma's contest - Please Vote!

I'm happy to say Jeanie Napier's favorite things to do with her grandchildren (reading, watching clouds, water balloons and making up stories) has moved on to our finals with Linda Haley - which will be in the beginning of August. Thank you everyone who voted.

Today I'm happy to share with you the next three grandmas who shared some of their favorite things to do with their grandchildren . . .

Summer Reading - Little Raccoon Learns to Share - I'm Giving One Away!

There are many important lessons our grandchildren need to learn; one of them is to be people who share. I have always made a point of telling my grandsons we love to share and celebrating every time I "catch" them sharing! So, when Sterling Children's Books sent me Little Raccoon Learns to Share to review, I was happy to read it to the boys!

grandma's chuckles - re-run - My Best "Grandma" Advice

Today is the last day of our "Four Days of Fun", so I thought I'd share another of my "grandma's chuckles" with you . . . Enjoy . . .

Yesterday I had the joy of celebrating my grandson, Josiah's 4th birthday! He got to pick the menu . . . chicken nuggets, fish sticks and fries . . . his momma brought the cake . . . white cake with cream cheese frosting and lots of sprinkles . . . and of course, he got to open gifts! It was sooo much fun!

Summer Reading - The Black Rabit

Children tend to be frightened of many things . . . thunder, the dark, dogs, bugs . . . the list can, and often does, go on and on. My Josiah is brave, very brave! He says he is not afraid of anything . . . except for shadows, so when Candlewick said they'd send me their book, The Black Rabbit for review, I was very happy to read it to him.

Summer Reading - Cinderella A Three-Dimensional Fairy-Tale Theater - I'm Giving One Away!

One of my favorite stories when I was little was Cinderella. She kept a good attitude in a difficult situation and in the end, her life was a "fairy-tale"! So, when I had an opportunity to take a look at a new Cinderella book from Candlewick Press, I was happy to do so.

grandma's chuckles - re-run - Josiah, grandma and the Quaker Oats Man!

The Four Days of Fun are definitely fun . . . today is day three, so I thought I'd take a moment and share my very first "grandma's chuckles" with you . . . enjoy . . .

"grandma's chuckles" are the things which make me chuckle . . . you know, the things your children and grandchildren say and do which bring a smile to your face and make your heart happy! These are the things I don't want to forget, so I'm writing them down and sharing them with you . . . I hope they bring a smile to your face, make your heart happy and cause you to chuckle, too . . . whether you are a grandma or not! :^) Enjoy!

So, for my first "chuckles" . . .

Summer Reading - My Pop-Up World Atlas

Just because it is Summer and children are not at school, it does not mean learning has to come to a stop. With this book, My Pop-up World Atlas, learning can continue all Summer as children go on a "journey" around the world to discover interesting things about each continent!

grandma's chuckles - re-run - You Have to be Brave to be a Super Hero!

I have lots of things planned for the second day of my Four Days of Fun, but I thought I'd take a moment to share another of my "grandma's chuckles" with you - enjoy . . .

My sweet grandson, Josiah, is four years old and he is really into Super Heroes! He LOVES the VeggieTales movie, The League of Incredible Vegetables and he LOVES his Super Cape! He will "fly" around my house singing, "♫♥♪ Super Josiah is here ♫♥♪ to save the day! ♫♥♪" Josiah told me yesterday right now he just pretends to be a Super Hero, but when he grows up he will be a Super Hero for real! Did I mention he has a "super" imagination?

Yesterday he was being "Super Josiah" when he came over to me and said, "I'm Super Josiah and you can be Super Grandma!" I said, "Okay! My 'super power' will be Super Kisses and Hugs!" Josiah let out a HUGE sigh and said, "Okay, but you HAVE to have a super power for when you fight bad guys, too." I said, "I don't know if I can fight bad guys." to which he replied, "You have to be brave to be a Super Hero."

grandma's chuckles - re-run - Watch Out for Those Fire-Breathing Basset Hounds!

While I'm enjoying my Four Days of Fun with my sweet grandsons, I thought it might be fun to "re-run" a few of my "grandma's chuckles" so you can "get to know" my sweet grandsons . . . and brighten your day with a smile, too! Enjoy . . .

I LOVE the imagination of four year olds! I LOVE the way they see the world and how some things are just "obvious" . . . at least if you are four years old!

My sweet grandson, Josiah, was at my house yesterday and he told me the following. "Grandma, if we lived in a different world, we'd have to watch out for fire-breathing basset hounds!"  I smiled, and said, "Hmmm. I don't think I've ever seen a fire-breathing basset hound." To which he replied, "That's because they would only be in a different world!
