Remember . . . as we get older, it can become more of a challenge to remember. Josiah tells me when I got older, I got, "holes in my brain" - this is why I forget things from time to time!

Today's devotional, "Remembering the Lord", by Bobbie Wolgemuth in my Grandmother's Bible encouraged me to remember! She encourages us to share our stories, "Stories which display God's character - His great faithfulness, His promises and His pattern of working in the many years of your life - are an encouragement your kids and grandkids need to hear when they're in a desperate situation. What word from Scripture did you cling to? What hymn did you sing? What prayer did you pray when your own life was engulfed by catastrophe? Remember the Lord. Give your family the gift only you can give - stories of God's deliverance on your behalf. And like Jeremiah, you will be filled with thanksgiving and able to tell everyone, 'salvation comes from the Lord.'"!

A Moment to Thank You . . .

I want to take a moment to thank you all for taking the time to read my blog! I also want to thank you for sharing grandma's cookie jar with the people you know! In addition, thank you for commenting and sharing part of your lives with us all - I enjoy hearing your stories, too! I most sincerely appreciate you all! Thank you!

grandma's chuckles:^) . . . "It's Bigfoot! Run For Your Lives!"

Grandchildren are such a joy - they make our hearts happy! They also make us laugh from time to time! So, today I thought I'd share with you a post I wrote almost three years about about something Josiah did which made me laugh - and still makes me laugh when I remember what he said!

"My grandson Josiah - nearly three years old - was over to my home last night and he said something which will have me laughing for a very long time! We watched, the Goofy Movie; when Bigfoot showed up, Josiah said, "It's Bigfoot! Run for your lives!" and ran into our dining room, around the table and into the kitchen saying, "Run for your lives!" Poppa got up and ran with him - for his "life", of course, but I was laughing too hard to run for my life (and I was holding a sleeping Caleb - nearly one month old).

grandma's cookbook - Refreshing Blueberry, Green Tea!

A couple days ago I shared my recipe for Blueberry, Lemon Cream Pie, so I thought it
made sense to share my favorite recipe for blueberry tea with you today!

It is hot and humid which makes it the perfect day for iced tea! Try this recipe with your grandchildren . . . it is simple, quick and so delicious! A big added "plus" is the health benefit . . . blueberries and green tea are so good for you! My husband never liked tea, until I made blueberry tea for him! Now he drinks my tea instead of pop! My grandsons love this tea, too . . . and the only sweetening comes naturally from blueberries . . . not sugar!

grandma's cookbook - Blueberry Lemon Refrigerator Pie!

Blueberry Refrigerator Pie recipe
I initially shared this recipe with you a year ago, but it sounds good to me today so, I thought I'd share it again . . .

I love lemons! I love blueberries! And, I most certainly LOVE whipped cream!!! So, what do you get when you combine all of these with a  cookie crust? Pure happiness, for sure!

Well, yesterday a friend shared the recipe for this delicious treat on their facebook page, so today I went to the Kraft recipes page to look for it. I'm very happy to say I found it . . . so what could be a better thing for me to do than to share it with you?

crafting with grandma - Stars & Stripes for the Fourth

Hello! Yesterday was a busy day for me - so today I thought I'd write about some ideas for Fourth of July fun! The Fourth is just a little over a week away, so consider trying some of the following to celebrate this day with your grandchildren . . .

grandma's bookshelf - My Heart is Like a Zoo!

Every once in awhile a book comes along which is so unique, so delightful, so much fun . . . My Heart is Like a Zoo is one such book!

grandma's bookshelf - Good Question Science Books - I'm giving Five Away!

While Summertime is the perfect time for relaxing, swimming, playing, enjoying the outside and activity, it is also the perfect time for reading! So, if you are looking for some books your grandchildren - and especially grandsons - might enjoy, check the, "Good Question!" books from Sterling Children's Books!

Well . . . That Did It! Now I Feel Old! :^)

I recently turned 53 . . . it seems strange to type this and then see those words! 53??!!! Well, in all honesty, those words don't make me feel as old as I feel when I think the following . . . "I remember back when I was a kid how people seemed to have a better sense of values." Well, that did it. Now I feel old!

Feeling old or not, when I look at the world around me I really do think people had a better sense of values when I was a kid. There at least seemed to be a sense of right and wrong and now people insist whatever anyone decides is right for them, is perfectly fine. They do not want to look to God's Word for the standard to determine right and wrong. When I look at the world my grandsons will grow up in, I feel concerned.

The Ten Commands From God's Own Hands - Another Must-have From grandma's bookshelf!

The Ten Commands from God's Own Hands: Ten Wiggly, Giggly Bible Stories That Teach God's Ten CommandmentsI'm so glad the internet makes it possible for us to add books to our bookshelf or give as gifts which are no longer available in books stores! Another book I absolutely love is The Ten Commands From God's Own Hands by Phil A. Smouse! This book takes the Ten Commandments, matches each commandment with a Bible story to illustrate a specific command and teach it's meaning so kids will remember and learn! The "sub-title" is, "Ten wiggly, giggly Bible stories that teach God's Ten Commandments" - these ten stories are -

Helpful Hal's Treasury of Christian Virtues - a Must-Have Book for grandma's bookshelf!

The Rhyme-Time Book of Christian VirtuesSummer is officially here tomorrow, so while children are likely looking forward to time off from school with plans for swimming, playing, camping, playing, etc, Summer is also a great time for reading books! With this in mind, for the next month, I'll share some book reviews with you - some will include opportunities to win a book and others are just reviews to let you know about some great books for summer reading!

Today I want to share with you one of my all-time favorite books for children. I originally bought these books for my children; it can be difficult to find it now, but if you do, you will find it is a book your grandchildren will love!

While Helpful Hal's Treasury of Christian Virtues is an old book, it is absolutely a must-have book for any grandma's bookshelf! When my children were young the stories in this book were individual books, but in 1997 Michael P. Waite's 12 stories were combined into one book. In 1999 it was re-released with the title, The Rhyme-Time Book of Christian Virtues - while they have different titles, they are the same collection of 12 wonderful stories! I love the colorful and fun illustrations and the silly and yet powerful stories . . . each one focuses on a specific theme -

crafting with grandma . . . Make Amazing Bubbles With Your Grandchildren!

A couple years ago Country Woman Magazine gave a great link to the blog How Does She .
. . which led to really simple, inexpensive and fun directions for making amazing bubbles! I thought this would be a fun idea to try with your grandchildren, so decided to share this link with you! After all, if we can amaze and delight our grandchildren by showing them how to make these incredible bubbles, why not do so???

This is One Grandma Who Will Trust God to "Light Up This Day!"

Psalm 34:1-15,17-19 - 1I will always praise the LORD. 2With all my heart, I will praise the
LORD. Let all who are helpless, listen and be glad. 3Honor the LORD with me! Celebrate his great name. 4I asked the LORD for help, and he saved me from all my fears. 5Keep your eyes on the LORD! You will shine like the sun and never blush with shame. 6I was a nobody, but I prayed, and the LORD saved me from all my troubles. 7If you honor the LORD, his angel will protect you. 8Discover for yourself that the LORD is kind. Come to him for protection, and you will be glad. 9Honor the LORD! You are his special people. No one who honors the LORD will ever be in need.10Young lions may go hungry or even starve, but if you trust the LORD, you will never miss out on anything good.11Come, my children, listen as I teach you to respect the LORD.12Do you want to live and enjoy a long life? 13Then don't say cruel things and don't tell lies.14Do good instead of evil and try to live at peace.15If you obey the LORD, he will watch over you and answer your prayers. 17When his people pray for help, he listens and rescues them from their troubles. 18The LORD is there to rescue all who are discouraged and have given up hope. 19The LORD's people may suffer a lot, but he will always bring them safely through. (CEV)

When I see the morning and evening news shows it can cause me to fear. I wonder what kind of world will my grandchildren grow up in? When I see reports about the school system and how it has moved so completely away from teaching our children absolutes, I wonder what will it be like for my grandchildren to grow up in a world where people can believe whatever they want to believe - or not believe. When I see the TV shows, movies, music and books and the messages they promote I wonder how my grandchildren will be able to find their way through all these God-less messages. The world can be a frightening place.

But, thankfully, even though I may look at the world and sometimes feel helpless, I'm not helpless! I will do as David said and praise the LORD with all my heart! I will honor and celebrate His great name because I know when I pray to Him, He listens and acts! God is there; I do not have to be discouraged and do not have to give up hope! There is nothing more important to me than for my grandchildren to come to know Jesus and then to know and walk with Him all their lives! Nothing matters more. The good news is this matters to God, too! He loves my grandchildren - and your grandchildren as well! He wants them to know and walk with Him, even more than I do!

Awesome LEGO Movie Blu-Ray Give-Away!

Last night we watched The LEGO Movie with our grandsons and I have to say, it is definitely a surprising, enjoyable and funny movie! So, when I received an email from Partnershub giving me the opportunity to share a fun app and give one LEGO Movie Blu-Ray away, I decided to participate! First, allow me to share some of my thoughts with you about the LEGO Movie . . .

Refuge in the Storm!

Last night, and so far this morning, it has been raining . . . and RAINING! And, the thunder,
well . . . there were two times in the night when it was so loud I nearly jumped out of bed! Josiah and Caleb were spending the night and I was sure the loud storm would wake them up, but they slept right through it!

This reminded me of Psalm 57:1; "Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; ithe shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by." My grandsons were completely at peace throughout the storm; even if I wondered if my gigantic maple tree was going to end up on my roof!

While I was surprised and happy my grandsons were able to sleep through the storm, I especially want them to grow up knowing how they can find refuge in God for whatever they face in life; because I know they will face "storms" in life. I talked about this with Josiah and he said it made him happy to know when he faces "storms" in life, he can find shelter in God!

Summer Fun with Pool Noodles!

Summer is here and school is out, so if you are looking for something fun which is relatively simple and inexpensive which you can put together for summertime fun, check this link which I found on Pinterest for five fun things you can make with pool noodles!

Follow this link and you'll find complete directions for all five games and photo tutorials as well! I think I will need to buy some pool noodles and dowels!

grandma's chuckles . . . Apparently I'm, "So Easy to Operate"!!!

My grandson Josiah is five years old and is turning into quite the reader! He is really quite
effective at sounding out words and is finding great joy at being able to sit down with a book and read what all those words have to say!

This of course, makes me a happy grandma as I want my grandsons to love reading! It also gives me some unexpected opportunities to see how my grandson thinks . . . and a few good laughs as well!

A couple days ago we were at the store with Josiah and saw a plaque with an "interesting" saying on it. I held it up for Josiah to read . . . which he did. The plaque said, "Grandparents; so easy to operate even a child can do it!" Josiah read it and then said, "This is true! At least for grandma, that is! All I have to do to get what I want from you is to look cute and be polite!"

just for fun - Today is Fudge Day!

Since Mondays can be a day which is difficult to start and feels like a long day, I'm very happy to let you know today is, along with being Monday, Fudge Day! Sounds like this Monday will be a very sweet day indeed!

As I looked up the info on this sweet day, I found;
"The origins of Fudge Day are unknown, but it cannot be denied celebrating this delicious, sweet treat is a great way to spend the day. (Especially and particularly if the day lands on a Monday!) Fudge is a soft, smooth confectionary made by heating and mixing milk, butter and sugar. A variety of other ingredients can then be added to create assorted flavours of fudge. Some of the most popular flavours include chocolate and peanut butter. (These are my two favorite flavors of fudge for sure!)"
I thought it might be fun to share with you some, "fudge facts"! Did you know . . .

It is Father's Day, so I want to take a moment to thank my wonderful husband, Dave, for

So to my husband, and all the fathers and grandfathers out there, Happy Father's Day! Enjoy this day to celebrate you! (And, Dave, enjoy time with our children and grandchildren . . . and the bacon and steak!)

What Truly Matters!

It is very easy in this day and age for us to become very focused upon ourselves; what we want, our time, ourselves, etc. But, if ever there were a time when we need to be focused upon others, I believe it is now; when we are grandparents. (I believe what I'm saying applies to parents as well.)

When my son and daughter need someone to take the boys, I am very happy to be that, "someone". I have five main reasons for this . . .

I Have a Winner!

I'm happy to say, Tracy Taylor is the winner in my When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence  DVD give-away (you'll find the review at this link.) Thank you Tracy for reading grandma's cookie jar (please message me your address by June 21, 2014 so I can send it to you) and thank you Hallmark/Word for sending one for me to review and for making another available for me to give away!

Happy Children's Day!

Yes, today is Children's Day! I'm a huge fan of this day; we celebrated yesterday with a menu picked by the boys - steak and bacon - and gifts, of course! Josiah said he is so glad his grandma celebrates children's day!

I celebrate for the fun of it and because I am so very thankful for the boys! I want them to grow up knowing absolutely for sure their grandma loves them! They are most certainly gifts from the hand of God so, while every day should be Children's Day, a day to especially focus on children and to celebrate them is a fantastic idea as far as I'm concerned!

So . . . Happy Children's Day!

crafting with grandma - Special Photo for Dad!

Father's Day is just a week away, so if you are looking for a great craft idea which you can do with your grandchildren for their dad, check this idea I found on Pinterest!

You'll find the idea for this photo at the following link, but all you need to get a photo like this with your grandchildren, is their feet, a permanent ink marker or paint and a camera . . . plus a fair amount of patience!!! Write on your grandchildren's feet, "We <3 Dad" and have them sit with the bottoms of their feet in front of them. Now fr the tricky part! Try to get them all to look at you and smile at the same time! Take the photo and then . . .

My Heart is Filled with Joy!

I am spending the day with my sweet Caleb today . . . such a treat! I love spending time
with all three of my grandsons - they are wonderful . . . and I'm not saying this just because I'm their grandma!

The other day Caleb was at my house and when it was time to go home he said he wanted to stay because, "grandma likes it when I am at her house!" I smiled and told him I loved him and loved having him at my house so he said, "grandma LOVES to have me at her house!" He is absolutely correct!

grandma's cookbook - Raspberry Ice Cream Pie!

Summer is finally here (at least here where I live in Michigan!) so with the warmer
weather it is the perfect time to get together with others to enjoy a meal! Of course, when the weather is warmer, baking is not at the top of my list of things to do, so it is the perfect time to make up those no-bake recipes.

A couple days ago I wanted to make a dessert, but didn't want to bake, so I took a can of apple/raspberry juice concentrate out of the freezer, mixed it with a tub of Extra Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream from Bryers, mixed two cartons of heavy cream, combined everything and put it into two cookie pie crusts (graham would work fine; as would chocolate cookie crust if you like chocolate and raspberry, but my favorite is the shortbread cookie crust!) and popped them into the freezer.

When it was time to serve the pie, I topped each piece with a few lovely, fresh raspberries! This pie was tasty, slightly tart and so cool and refreshing; the perfect dessert for Summertime!

crafting with grandma - DIY Toys for Children's Day!

With Children's Day just a few days away, if you are looking for some fun ideas for gifts
which you could make for your grandchildren - or have them make for themselves, check this great link which I found on Pinterest!

Follow this link and you'll find photos and directions for a variety of fun toys . . . all DIY! I especially like the wood blocks made from trees and branches - I have a lot of trees in my yard and after this past winter, we ended up with a lot of branches down! I also love the idea for the musical instruments made from pvc pipe, wood boards, etc . . . I think it would be fun to add some of these to the swing set/slide/fort in our yard for the boys!

So, what do you think? Which ideas do you like the best?

Five Days until Children's Day . . . Plans are Being Made!!!

There are only five days until Children's Day (the second Sunday of June) and around my
house, plans are being made! Our menu will be, "interesting" . . . bacon and steak with cake and rootbeer floats for dessert. While I do not doubt the boys - and their dad - will enjoy the bacon and steak, this menu does need a bit of "filling out"! Apparently we are having "double desserts" for Children's Day; which may be appropriate on a day to celebrate children! (We will be substituting Cream Soda for the Root Beer to avoid food dyes).

FREE Family Resource - HomeFront Magazine!

Raising children; especially preschool and young elementary children, is not particularly "boring". Not only are you spending your time with some of the least-boring people on the face of the earth (children), but there is always something to be focused and working on!

In all our focus on the day-in-day-out work of raising children, it can be easy to lose focus on another important aspect of raising children beyond the daily providing for their needs; guiding children so they grow in their walk with God.
