Use the Fun Times to Hand Down the Faith

One thing we are able to do as grandmas is plan for fun times with our grandchildren; times which will build memories and our relationship with our grandchildren. For example, each year my grandsons decorate eggs at my house and then after Resurrection Sunday dinner, their parents hide the eggs in my yard and the boys go find them. It is just fun. We do this just for fun.

Fun is, well, fun! And it is an important part of building our relationship with our grandchildren. It also gives us the opportunity to hand down faith. After my grandsons find their eggs, we talk about what Resurrection Sunday is really all about - it is not about a bunny; it is about the Lamb!

So, plan for fun. Create memories. Enjoy your time with your grandchildren. And, use these fun times to hand down the faith!   #grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo#grandparentingonpurpose (This post is from the Grandmas with Heart facebook page - please check it out and like, follow and share with the people you know.)

A Few Fun Easter Craft Ideas!

Just a couple days until Easter! Of course, looking out my window this morning you certainly wouldn't know Spring is here - according to the calendar! As I write this it is 30 degrees outside and it is possible we will receive more snow over the coming days, but warmer weather will be here soon! WooHoo!

So, as I thought about Easter I wanted to find some fun craft ideas . . . of course I checked the ideas on Pinterest! Take a look at some of what I found . . .

Remember with a Simple, Fun Activity

Today, Good Friday, is the day we remember Jesus on the cross. He willingly took our place; the innocent for the guilty, so we could be forgiven and receive God's grace. Take time today to remember and thank Jesus for what He did for you.

An Inconvenient Truth

Okay, I'm about to share a truth with you which you may not want to think about. Ready??? Here it is . . . you are not getting any younger. No matter how much you try to fool the mirror, the truth is, you are not getting any younger - neither am I.

And, neither are our grandchildren.

Why do I mention this, you ask? For one reason, because it is the truth. If we do not understand and accept the truth, we can not act upon it. And this is an important truth we must act upon.

Grandprints - One of My Favorite Songs!

Several of the Grandmas with Heart are also part of the Legacy Coalition. It is our heart's desire to see grandparents stand up and commit to be intentional Christian grandparent who are focused upon handing down a heritage of faith to their grandchildren and help churches become intentional when it comes to equipping their grandparents to be intentional. One of the ways the Legacy Coalition does this is with the Legacy Grandparenting Summit - an opportunity to hear from amazing speakers and singers who encourage and equip grandparents to be intentional in handing down their faith.

So far there have been two Summits and another is planned for next year - watch for details as they become available. Last year Scott Wesley Brown was one of the people who sang at the summit - he shared his new song - Grandprints - which he wrote especially for the Legacy Coalition's Grandparenting Summit! Just listen to this amazing song . . .

Love Which is Shown

With Resurrection Sunday just three days away, today is a wonderful day to think about God's love. God did not just tell us He loves us - which He did do, but He also showed His great love by making His grace available to us!

But, this is not where God's love for us ends. Not at all! God shows His great love for us each day in big and small ways. Take time today to think about and watch for ways God shows His love to you.

Then, be sure to share God's great love with your grandchildren - if they have not yet accepted God's gift of love be sure to tell them about it. If they have, challenge them to watch for God's love each day - the big and small ways He shows His love and let them know you will be looking forward to hearing from them about how He did this!   #grandmas#handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo #grandparentingonpurpose

Share the Good News with a Paper Airplane, Rocket & Cross!

In just a few days we will celebrate the most amazing day in history; the resurrection of Jesus. Without the resurrection our faith is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:14). The resurrection of Jesus is our core message, because it made God's grace available to us.

So, share the Good News of Jesus with your grandchildren. If they have not already put their trust in Jesus, take time to tell them how they are able to do this - consider using this simple, and fun tool with them.

grandma's bookshelf - God's Got Your Back

I was recently sent a little book from Hallmark to review and I have to say, I love it! This little book is one meant to be shared with the ones you love . . . bit by bit!

Carry the Umbrella

Do you pray with the faith which "carries the umbrella"? Make the choice to hold firmly to the truth - God has promised to hear, listen to and answer our prayers. Do not let your prayers be sidetracked or derailed by Satan's lies which say God does not hear your prayers. Hold tightly to the truth!

And, keep track of how God answers your prayers, so you are able to tell your grandchildren your own first-hand experience of how God answers your prayers! When they hear you tell why you are able to "carry the umbrella", they will learn to "carry the umbrella" and believe God hears, listens to and answers their prayers, too!  #grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo#grandparentingonpurpose

Intentional Faith - "Stick" to God

When it comes to being intentional about handing down faith to our grandchildren, we may feel intimidated. It is, after all, the most important thing we will ever do. But, while it is essential, it is not difficult; and most certainly something we should not fear. It can actually be rather simple.

Leave "Grace-tracks" For Your Grandchildren to Follow

We leave foot-tracks for our grandchildren to follow by what we say, but they are much, much clearer when what we do backs up what we say. And, when what we say and do is grounded firmly in grace, our tracks will not only be "clear", but they will be "attractive".

So, be a grandma who speaks grace to your grandchildren. Be a grandma whose actions "shout" grace loud and clear. When we do this we are doing what Jesus did. His words and actions were grounded firmly in grace and we certainly want our grandchildren to see and follow His foot-tracks; make it easier for them to do this by being certain your own foot-tracks are tracks of grace.

Our Top Five Reasons for Being There

Now we are a few months into the new year it is a good time to think about “time” . . . in particular, how best to use the time we have to the glory of God. For example, as a grandparent, I want to make sure I am intentionally using the time God has given me to be there for my grandchildren.
I know some grandparents feel it is wise to set limits on time with their grandchildren, especially if their adult children believe grandparents should be on-demand at their beck and call without consideration for plans the grandparents may have. On the other hand, there are some who simply want to be “freed up” to enjoy their retirement on their terms.
While I understand the need to address an on-demand attitude which expects availability on their terms, I think those who give more priority to their retirement plans than their responsibilities as grandparents have completely missed the wisdom of intentionality with our grandchildren. Personally, I am happy to spend time with my grandchildren as often as possible. I know not everyone is in the position to be as available as I am as I am privileged to keep my grandsons for a sleep-over at my house each week. I appreciate every opportunity I have to spend time with these three sweet gifts from the hand of God!
So, why do I believe it is real wisdom to spend as much time with my grandchildren as I can? Consider the following . . .

A Prayer from Jeremiah 6 for Your Children & Grandchildren

As our grandchildren go through their lives, they will be faced with the choice to follow God's way, or not. While we are not able to make this choice for them, we are able to live on purpose and leave a godly example, offer counsel when asked and most importantly, we are able to pray for them. Never underestimate the power of prayer as God has promised to listen and answer our prayers - and He loves our grandchildren and wants them to make wise choices even more than we do.

Consider making this prayer from Jeremiah 6 your prayer for your grandchildren this week . . . "Dear God, thank You for giving us a clear path to follow, one where we will find rest for our souls. As my children and grandchildren go through today, please help them stop and look for Your way and then make the choice to follow it. As they walk in Your way, please help them experience Your rest. Thank You for Your great love for us; I love You, too! Amen. #grandmas #handingdownthefaith#itmatterswhatwedo #grandparentingonpurpose

A Grandma's Heart is a Patchwork of Love

Oh yes! We grandmas (and grandpas and parents) do love the grandblessings God has given to us! We certainly tell our grandchildren how much we love them and we show it, but don't forget one of the most important things you will ever do to show your love - pray for your grandchildren.

Take time today to pray for them. Pray they will be drawn close to Jesus, their hearts and minds will be protected and they will know the truth. Pray they will have friends who love God - and they will be a friend who loves God as well. Pray they will choose to love and follow God all their lives.

In that patchwork quilt of love, prayer is a very large "patch"! Make prayer one of the primary ways you show your love for your grandchildren.  #grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo#grandparentingonpurpose

My "Grandma's To-Do List" - Smile, Laugh & Play . . . & Be Generous with the Hugs, Kisses & Snuggles

As grandparents, we obviously all know there are things we do and say because we are grandparents, which we would not do or say if we were not grandparents. While this is the case for several things, one such thing on my "Grandma's To-Do List" is . . .

Be a Torchbearer!

The world in which our grandchildren are growing up is far different than it was when we were children, teens and even young adults. But, while the world is different, God and His Word are unchanging. The light of the Gospel is the one thing which changes the darkness of the world in which we live. Be torchbearers! Hold forth the truth of how Jesus is the Light, God's Word gives light and definitely treat our grandchildren with grace, patience and love, so they are drawn to Jesus.

When we are faithful to hold the light steady, our grandchildren will be drawn to it - and discover how they are able to know, love and follow Jesus for themselves. We want them to make this choice and then to be the ones who become torchbearers one day for their own children and grandchildren.   #grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo#grandparentingonpurpose  (This post is from the Grandmas with Heart facebook page - please check it out and like, follow and share with the people you know.)

grandma's chuckles - Apparently, I'm "Elderly", We Have a Reader & a Huge Hug!!!

I originally posted this five years ago, but when I saw it today it made me smile, so I thought I'd share it with you again today!
It has been a fun weekend around this grandma's house! The boys came home with Poppa on Thursday to spend the night and hang out with grandma on Friday - my favorite day each week!!!  Thursday night we watched Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension. In the movie Perry bites Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Phineas says, "No, Perry! We don't bite the elderly!!!" Josiah asked me, "What is 'the elderly'?" I told him elderly means "old people", so he thought for a moment and said, "Oh. Like great-grandma and you?" I didn't really want to agree it meant "me", so I asked him, "Hhmmm. What about Poppa?" to which Josiah replied, "Yes, definitely Poppa!!!" Of course I had to smile at his answer!!! :-) I was also very pleased when Josiah showed consideration by offering to re-start the movie when Aunt Tiffany joined us part-way through and he learned she had not watched this movie before.

Take What Matters With Us to Heaven

Oh yes, it matters so much what we do as grandmas (and grandpas and parents, too), because as we invest on purpose in the lives of the ones we love by handing down the faith, the "dividends" will "pay" as they learn to know, love and walk with God. The biggest "bonus" comes when they become the ones who "invest" on purpose and hand down the faith to their own children and grandchildren.

I do not want even one person in my family line to be lost; not even one. I pray for faith to be handed down from me to my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren an on until Jesus returns. They are who I want to take to Heaven with me! So, I will leave behind the confidence in God and His faithful love and the desire to hand it down to those who come after us.

Oh yes, it matters so very much what we do as grandmas (and grandpas and parents, too)!    #grandmas #handingdownthefaith#itmatterswhatwedo #grandparentingonpurpose (This post is from the Grandmas with Heart facebook page - please check it out and like, follow and share with the people you know.)

"Listen" and "Respond"

"Listen" and "Respond". Yes, we as grandmas (and grandpas and parents, too) need to be people who "Listen" and "Respond" appropriately to the children we love. This is called being kind. This is called love and this makes a difference - a huge difference in the lives of these children. We must model this kindness; this love to them every day, on purpose.

And, we need to be consistent when it comes to helping them learn to do the same. We need to help them learn to "Listen" to themselves, to others and yes, to God and help them learn what it means to "respond" in helpful and appropriate ways. This is what matters and it is how they will feel fulfilled and experience joy!

Today is, "Won't You Be My Neighbor Day"

As grandmas (or grandpas and parents, too) we want to influence the children we love. We want to hand down the faith and we want to help them grow to be kind, treat others with gentleness and learn to make wise choices, because we know if they do, they will live much fuller lives and because we love them.

Well, today is, "Won't You Be My Neighbor Day" which, according to is; "a day to remember and honor Fred Rogers, the iconic children’s TV presenter of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. His show reached it’s heyday in popularity back in the 1970’s and 80’s, and repeats are still able to be seen today. Gentle, soft-spoken Mr. Rogers was a mainstay for preschoolers and their parents; teaching them respect of those around you and a good attitude were just as important as learning your colors and letters."

What Did Your Grandparents Say?

Grandparents and wisdom; the two go together and there is a reason old sayings, such as these, are handed down from one generation to the next - they tend to be wise sayings. And many of these saying actually reflect Biblical truth - for example, "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" and "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" both teach the same truth as; "Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone." from Colossians 4:6

Yes, as grandparents we do tend to hand down wise sayings - which is fine, just be sure we are purposeful about also handing down the truth of Scripture! What old saying did your grandparents say to you - and do you find yourself saying the same thing to your grandchildren?

grandma's cookie jar - Soft Butter Cookies

My grandsons are coming over today - they have a teacher's "work-day" at school today, so no school for the boys. One of my grandsons' favorite cookies is a butter/sugar cookie, so I'm thinking we may make some today . . . because I am grandma :-)

The recipe is very tasty, so I thought I'd share it with you as well.

Wise Choices & Trusting God

Do you have a grandchild or son/daughter who has to make a big decision? Do you have any big decisions facing you? Do you have grandchildren who are learning what it means to make wise choices and to trust God? Model what this looks like and tell them your own "Faith History" of how God has shown Himself faithful as you made decisions throughout your life.

A Prayer About God's Faithful Love

Aren't you so thankful to know the same faithful love God has shown you and continues to show you is available for your grandchildren! Consider making this wonderful verse your prayer today -
Dear God, thank You for Your faithful love and righteousness. Please help my children and grandchildren remember, see and experience them today. In the coming week, please help us all remember to keep Your commands and to make wise choices which honor You. Amen

crafting with grandma - T-Shirt Pillows

My sister shared on her facebook, a fun and simple idea for making pillows, so today I'm sharing it with you! All you need are old t-shirts, pillows and scissors . . . very, very easy!

So I looked on Pinterest and found directions - which you'll find at this link with step-by-step directions for making the pillow - you basically cut away the lower portion of the t-shirt, cut corners away, and then cut in along the four edges to make ties which you then tie to make a pillow cover (you put the pillow between the fabric before you start tying, so when you finish, the pillow is complete.)

Now, I also think it would be fun to use white t-shirts, which you decorate with your grandchildren's handprints and/or photos (use acrylic paints and iron-on transfers you can print.) These pillows would make wonderful gifts . . . and your grandchildren could help make them. (Think Mother's Day and Father's Day gifts!)

Help Our Grandchildren See & Remember

Our grandchildren absolutely need to hear us talk about how God has been faithful to us yesterday. They need to hear us point out how He is faithful to us today. They also need to hear us share why we believe God will be faithful to us tomorrow. They need to hear these things.

But, they also need to remember how God has been faithful to them yesterday. They need to see how God is faithful to them today. When they remember and see these things, they will be able to believe Godwill be faithful to them tomorrow.

These things are essential for them to develop their own "Faith History", so help them remember - give them their own journal or set of "faith rocks" for them to record how and when God has been faithful to them yesterday. Help them see and celebrate how God is faithful to them today! Talk with them about why you all believe God will be faithful to you all tomorrow. This is what handing down the faith is all about; and it matters!

crafting with grandma - Yarn Bowl

I was once again browsing on Pinterest and found the directions for making a yarn bowl! This looks like a wonderful craft you could make with your grandchildren . . . particularly on a blustery, Spring day - or possibly turn into a basket they could use when hunting eggs!

A Grandma is . . .

Whether you go by the "name" of grandma, nana, meme, me-mom, granny or even "Dave" (a few months back when I asked what your grandchildren call you, one of you said your grandson called you "Dave" for about a year when he was two - for no reason anyone was able to discover!), we grandmas are able to make a huge impact on the lives of our grandchildren. Yes, we encourage dreams, cheer our grandchildren's successes, show warmth, kindness, love and are quick to laugh. But the most important thing any grandma will ever do is to hand down the faith and point our dear grandchildren to Jesus.

Make time today to connect with your grandchildren - in person, on-line or even through snail mail. Build a strong relationship with your grandchildren - it will give them a sense of security and encourage them to walk with God.

Fun Ideas for St. Patrick's Day

Sunday is St. Patrick's Day so I thought I'd browse on Pinterest to see if I could find some new ideas for fun things to do to celebrate . . . and I'm happy to share a site chocked full of  25 ideas!

Help the Children You Love Have a Strong "God Confidence"

Show your "God confidence" and tell your grandchildren how you hope in God and how He has answered your prayers. Then, help them keep an account of how God answers their own prayers - big and small - so they are able to see for themselves how "God comes through", "set their hope in Him" and have a strong "God confidence" of their own. This is what "handing down the faith" looks like.

grandma's cookbook - Fluffy Rolls

Mmmm! I love rolls! Fresh from the oven, soft, with butter melting on them . . . what could be more enjoyable? As a child, one of my favorite parts of special family dinners was knowing I was going to be able to enjoy a couple of my grandma's rolls! So, as I browsed on Pinterest, I noticed a recipe for rolls. The picture alone was enough to put a smile on my face! With Resurrection Sunday just around the corner, I thought I'd share the recipe with you today!

So, What is a Grandma's Role?

This is one grandma who absolutely loves her grandchildren (and mom who loves her children and daughter-in-law, too!) I know as a mom my "role" was to raise my children in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord" - and this parenting "job" is one my husband and I took seriously. Oh, we most certainly were not perfect parents - there are things I would do differently today, but we did the best we could with what we knew to do.

Obviously as grandma I am not "mom", so what is my "job" as "grandma"? I found an excellent post on-line about "grandparents" and want to share a few points this writer made. (You will find the complete article at this link

Get Ready for Something Big!

Our God is bigger than we think He is and He is able to do ever so much more than we are able to even begin to imagine! Not only is He able to do big things in our lives, but He will do them. And, not in our lives only, but in the lives of our children and grandchildren as well.

Craft-Stick Harmonicas

Resurrection Sunday is not quite three weeks away, so I thought it would be fun to find some different ideas our grandchildren could make for a unique and memorable celebration. Of course this meant I started by browsing through Pinterest . . . where I came upon an idea which fit what I was looking for . . . interesting, unique and fun for the boys to make!

Oxford University Study

We do not really need an Oxford University study to tell us what we experience and know to be true - our grandchildren are happier when we are heavily involved in their lives. Not only are they happier, but they learn important things when we invest our time in them, such as, reading, new skills, family history, how to respond to stress, treating others with love and most importantly why we believe what we believe.
