My Best "Grandma Advice"

As grandmas we tend to know a thing or two about raising children - we have done it with our own and have hopefully learned things which work and things which do not. But, we do have to be careful about giving unsolicited advice. However; there are times when it is not only okay, but is welcome. I remember one such time six years ago when my son and his family were at my house. At one point Caleb, my then one-year old grandson, grabbed his momma's purse and pulled it off a table . . . one-year olds do tend to get into things! The following morning I heard "music" I was not familiar with! Dave (my hubby) and I began looking all around the dining room - where the music was coming from - and lo and behold, apparently our daughter-in-law's phone had fallen out of her purse when Caleb pulled it off the table!!!

grandma's cookbook - Apple-Cinnamon Pull-Apart Loaf

My grandsons enjoy pull-apart cinnamon bread on the mornings when they are at my house for sleepovers. I found what looks like a tasty apple recipe I found on Pinterest . . . Apple-Cinnamon Pull-Apart Loaf . . . I have to tell you, this looks amazing! I am going to have to try it - it is likely my grandchildren will enjoy it.

Just follow the link for a complete recipe plus a photo tutorial and have fun surprising your family with this delectable treat!

Because Great is His Faithfulness

I love Lamentations 3:22, "The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.

Just stop and think about it . . .the "steadfast" love of the Lord never ceases! Steadfast! I'm so glad God's love is steadfast. The dictionary defines steadfast as, "unwavering or determined in purpose". Aren't you glad to know God's love for you is unwavering and determined in purpose? I am! God loves me on my best days! God loves me on my worst days! God loves me on all my in-between days! And, this amazing, steadfast, unwavering love of God for me NEVER ceases! It never stops! Not ever!

As if this wasn't enough, His mercies NEVER come to an end! God gives me His mercy when I blow it! God gives me His mercy when I just mess up a little. God gives me His mercy and His mercy is new every morning!

As if all this wasn't enough, Great is His faithfulness! I can always depend on God to do what He says He will do because He is faithful!

I found it on Pinterest (of course) and am delighted to share it with you!

He Drives Like a Mad-Man

One of my favorite things about facebook is the "On this day" feature where it shows me things I posted each day one, two or more years earlier. It is a wonderful way to remember those special times with family and friends.

Well, today's post is one I'm sharing which I originally wrote five years ago, but when I saw it today, it made me laugh as I remembered my then two year old grandson and how he used to "drive" the dump truck like a "mad-man"! Enjoy . . .

The People I Want My Grandsons to Be

I want my grandsons to be people who show love, mercy and hospitality to those who come into their lives. I want them to have tender hearts, so they are quick to stand up for and help those in need. I want them to be people who love others in word and deed. I want them to know and live Romans 12:9-21 as it is absolutely true and the answer to the evil, sadness and pain in this world –

Raspberry Ice Cream Pie

If you would like to make a special dessert for Labor Day to make a dessert, but do not particularly want to bake, all you need is a can of apple/raspberry juice concentrate, mixed it with a tub of Extra Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream from Bryers, mix two cartons of heavy cream, combined everything and put it into two cookie pie crusts (graham would work fine; as would chocolate cookie crust if you like chocolate and raspberry, but my favorite is the shortbread cookie crust!) then pop them into the freezer.

When it is time to serve the pie, top each piece with a few lovely, fresh raspberries! This pie is tasty, slightly tart and so cool and refreshing; the perfect dessert for Labor Day or any time!

No Fear!

When I look at this world I wonder, and at times even feel afraid, about what it is going to be like for my grandsons to grow up. When I was a child pretty much everyone went to church. Family values actually meant something and there was still a sense of, "right and wrong" in the world. The world seemed like a more peaceful place; even with the Vietnam war.

While it is certainly possible I was just sheltered and not really aware of what was actually going on in the world around me, it still was not like it is today. We didn't have terrorists killing and threatening to kill. We didn't have such hostility to faith and values. We didn't have such anger between people of different political perspectives. We didn't have such open flaunting of sin.

But, the world is what it is today and it is where my grandsons are growing up. I don't want to face this world with fear, so I find 2 Timothy 1:7 to be a great encouragement . . .

Free Back-to-School Printables

Here in Michigan - where I live - school started yesterday. My youngest grandson will be going to kindergarten . . . it doesn't seem possible he could actually be old enough for school! Those five years have truly flown by!

Baked Donuts!!!

Baked Doughnuts Recipe - ZipList
Okay, today is not "Donuts Day", but I think every day should be! I really do LOVE donuts . . . but, since they are not particularly good for me, I rarely eat them. However; with this new recipe I found on Pinterest, I may start eating them more often - still not a lot, but more often! After all, baked donuts can't be that terribly bad for me . . . can they? :-)

My Promise

My grandsons begin school today; which has me thinking about how quickly they are growing up and what truly matters. I may not be able to take my sweet grandsons to fancy places. I may not be able to buy these dear boys the newest, coolest and most awesome toys and gadgets. I may not be able to give them every thing they may want, but I absolutely will be sure the words I say fill their hearts with joy and remind them how ever so much they are loved!

I will always put aside my computer and make room in my lap for sweet boys to snuggle (after all, a grandma's lap is not a place for a computer; it is a place for a grandson)! I will always greet these three gifts from the hand of God with a smile on my face, in my eyes and filling my heart! I will be certain to be generous with the words, "I love you; forever and for always!" and most importantly; I will be absolutely certain these three boys who fill my heart with love and make it so very happy, know as much as their grandma loves them . . . and it is a whole lot; God loves them even more!

crafting with grandma - Waxed Fall Leaves

Leaves dipped in wax to preserve color.I live in West Michigan; which is known for the beauty of it's seasons! We get all four  seasons here - which means, our Falls are spectacular for the color in the trees!

I was browsing on Pinterest  and saw a pin with directions for waxing and hanging Fall leaves and thought I'd share it with you! You'll find all the specifics at this link.

Take your grandchildren on a walk in the park, in the country or through the woods this Fall when the leaves turn to bright colors; as you walk, collect a few for waxing when you return home. Spend time making wax leaves to hang in your home and as you do, talk about the beautiful world God created! Ask your grandchildren what they think was the most amazing thing they saw on your walk. Ask them which leaf is their favorite. Lead them in popcorn praises to God for the beautiful world He created!

This is a recipe your grandchildren could enjoy making with you . . . and will certainly enjoy eating! You'll find the recipe and all you need to know at this link. Grandparents & Love

As I was thinking about what to write today, God brought to mind 1 Corinthians 13:4 . . Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

These verses give us a very clear view of what love is, and shows us how to love our grandchildren in a way which points them to God. Love is not an emotion which comes and goes. It is not something which depends on how others treat us or how our situation looks. Love is a choice. Period. We choose to love others – no matter what, because this is how God loves us; no matter what.

grandma's chuckles - "Hugs Are Good For You"

My grandsons have spent several days a week this summer at my house - with just a week and a half before school begins, I'm remembering things they have said and done - it has been a wonderful summer for sure! Today I'm sharing with you something my grandsons said on one of their sleepovers. We were getting ready for bed and I hugged Shane, hugged Caleb then asked Josiah if he wanted a hug, too. Josiah wanted a hug, so of course, I happily hugged him.

Poppa said hugs are good for us and this surprised Josiah. They then talked about how studies show people who hug and receive hugs are healthier and live longer. To which Josiah said; "Then Caleb, Shane and I will be very healthy and live a very long time, because we get LOTS of hugs; especially at your house!" Then he looked at me and said; "And apparently you are going to be very healthy and live a very long time, too, grandma, because you give a LOT of hugs!" Caleb added; "And, you get a lot of hugs, too!" To which we all hugged again!

We are "View-Givers"

Image result for clipart of viewfinder handsToday I want to write about something important. Handing down a heritage of faith to our grandchildren. Three years ago I heard Steve Bell (Willow Creek Church) say something which got my attention: "How we feel about our grandchildren is how they will feel about themselves."

Fill Your Heart, Your thoughts and Your Home With Praise!

Neta Jackson is one of the devotional writers for the NIV Grandmother's Bible and she wrote about praising God. She said,  "The more I meditate on this Scripture, (Psalm 8) the more it makes sense. Satan's work thrives in an atmosphere of doubt, worry, distraction, busyness and discouragement. But praise? Praise to the living God is not Satan's working condition. If I want to build a stronghold of protection against that old devil, I need to fill my heart, my thoughts and my home with praise!"

So what are you doing today to fill your heart, your thoughts and your home with praise? When your grandchildren are near you, do they see and hear you praising God for the many blessings, big and small in your everyday life? Do you help them lift their hearts in praise to God for the big and small parts of their everyday lives? Make a point of praising God throughout your day and make it a goal to help your grandchildren learn to do the same!

Choices and Celebrating

Tomorrow David Lee Freeman Sr and I will celebrate 37 years of marriage! I'm so thankful for each day of the past 37 years and look forward to many, many more days and years together!

Some of you may not know it, but Dave and I were married on my grandpa and grandma Fullmer's 55th anniversary . . . yes, they were married on August 7, 1926! Talk about a heritage of faithfulness and an example to follow! I look forward to celebrating our 55th anniversary - eighteen years to go!

My sister, Loretta Baughan, wrote a book about our grandparents - Clarence and Faye (

…/…/1516844718). They faced many challenges and hardships Dave and I have not faced . . . the depression, serious illnesses, being caught in a tornado and more. Throughout their lives they remained committed to each other - an example Dave and I choose to follow each and every day.

People ask what the "secret" is to a long and happy marriage. I believe it is about the choices we make. We choose to love. We choose to be faithful. We choose to forgive. We choose to keep our vows. Yes, life brings with it challenges, but it also brings blessings. Dave is absolutely one of God's greatest blessings in my life and I am so very thankful!

Celebrate - it Matters

I am in favor of celebrating with grandchildren. Celebrate special days, celebrate milestones, celebrate just for the fun of it. I believe it is a great way to build a strong relationship and because it gives us opportunities to hand down the faith.
Image result for clipart for milestones
A few years ago when I was researching child slavery I learned one of the biggest ways those who prey on children build relationships with children, is by celebrating those children. These horrible people act like they care about a child, pay attention to them and even listen to them talk for hours. They do all this to get a child to believe they really care about them.

As my grandchildren grow up I want them to know beyond a shadow of a doubt their family loves and celebrates them! When an adult pays attention to them, I want it to be their grandparents /parents. When an adult listens to them, I want it to be their grandparents/parents. When an adult celebrates them and the mile-stones in their lives, I want it to be their grandparents/parents

Review - Altitude Trampoline Park

Image may contain: 1 person, on stage, child, basketball court and outdoor
I was recently given the opportunity to have my son and his family visit Altitude Trampoline Park in Grand Rapids, MI to review it as a place for families to enjoy; today I'm going to write about their experience.

Since Altitude Trampoline Park is not far from my home, my grandsons have been watching with great anticipation as they prepared the building for their opening. The boys were quite happy to go and review it for me. The found the trampolines, foam pit and battle beams to be great fun, but the trapeze was by and far the highlight - at least for my now seven year old grandson! He LOVED the Trapeze!

Family Fun Month
