Just for Fun - Caramel Apple Day & Knock-Knock Joke Day!

Today is the "day" for two things my grandsons will surely enjoy . . . Caramel Apple Day and Knock-Knock Joke Day! First, let's think about Caramel Apple Day! Of course a simple tub of caramel and sliced apples are an easy . . . and tasty way to enjoy and celebrate this day or the classic apple on a stick, dipped in caramel, but I found a couple additional fun ideas for apple  tastiness which would not only be fun to eat and make, but would also make a great gift to give to others! Check these ideas . . .

Check out Grandmas with Heart

If you are interested in handing confident faith to your children  and/or grandchildren, take a minute to check out another blog I write - Grandmas with Heart. On this blog you will find a new post - or two - each day which will encourage you to hand down confident faith and provide ideas to help you do so. You'll also find a new photo meme with each post which you are welcome to download and share with your friends.

Eden's Garden Essential Oils

I tend to be a fairly skeptical person when it comes to things like essential oils, but a friend once shared how essential oils made a huge difference in the life of their son with serious medical issues. Since I have MS and asthma, I thought I'd look on-line to see if essential oils might be helpful. Today I'm delighted to share with you how oils may be used by you and the ones you love as well . . . and please know, the company I'm recommending is not a multi-level marketing company.

Thank You - and Get Your Free Kindle Copy of The DNA of Grandparents & Parents Who Hand Down Confident Faith

As we come up to the time of year where we typically think more often about the things for which we are thankful, I want to say I am thankful for you. Thank you for taking time to read grandma's cookie jar and share it with the people you know.

Schedule Time with Your Grandchildren

We are coming into what is often one of the more busy times of the year - so many things to do, places to go, events to attend, and the list goes on. While many of these things on our to-do and to-go-to lists are likely to include family, others do not, so take time to make time, for your grandchildren in particular.

October 31st - An Opportunity to Share the Love of Jesus! Don't Waste It!

This post is also a repeat - I share it each year in case you did not see it, or want to find it again this year.

Yesterday I wrote about the "Halloween Dilemma" and how we need to be wise. I wrote about how it gives us the opportunity to have a conversation with our grandchildren about who Jesus is and why the focus on evil and gore at Halloween is not something we want to be part of the things we do this time of year. But, having said this, I do believe Halloween does offer us an unique opportunity to share the love of Jesus with our neighbors and all the children who knock on our doors October 31st.

Applesauce Cookies - a Tasty, Fall Classic

It is my firm belief most, if not all, of the people who read grandma's cookie jar are people who bake cookies - at least from time to time. So, I thought it would be fun to share a recipe with you for applesauce cookies.

The Halloween Dilemma

I originally posted this two years ago, but decided to share it again, so if you did not see it, or want to see it again, it is easy to find.

When it comes to Halloween, I have always felt a bit of a dilemma. As a child, it seemed harmless. I dressed up as princess, a Japanese girl in a kimono, etc . . . simple costumes with no focus on gore or evil. My siblings and I trick-or-treated our neighbors' homes and always felt like we really "scored" with our buckets of candy! After all, it was really all about the candy!!!

"Because My Grandma LOVES Them!"

I live on an acre, out in the country, in West Michigan, in the farmhouse my grandparents built back in the 1920's. In my front and side yard are six very large maple trees. In my back yard, behind the double-stall garage is the most enormous maple tree I've ever seen - it reaches far above the roof of the garage and spans beyond the sides of the garage - on both sides! It is enormous! We also have one very, very tall sycamore tree, three birch trees and several other trees - including about a dozen pine trees.

crafting with grandma - Make a Crocheted/Rope Basket!

I was browsing on Pinterest this morning and found a link for directions for making a rope basket - I thought this might be a great item which you could help your granddaughter make and then fill with special treats for a great gift she could give her mom, parents, or friend this Christmas! Or, you could make a few and then have your grandchildren fill them with treats for their parents, a teacher, or an elderly neighbor!

The Reason for God - Absolutely a Must-Have Book

Many grandparents/ parents find themselves in a place where they are needing to answer questions relating to why they should believe God is real, the Bible is true, God and science go together, and God is good from their grandchildren/ grown children/children. While some may know the answers, many do not. This is why today I am so very happy to share with you a book which answers these very questions - and does so with excellent, thoughtful answers. Tim Keller is the author of The Reason for God and this is a must-have book for every grandparent/parent.

Craft - Thankful Turkey Mobile

With Thanksgiving around the corner our focus tends to turn to being thankful. Today I'm happy to share a simple craft with you which you could make with your grandchildren to help them think about being thankful.

Memorable Ways to Focus Upon Developing Eyes of Gratitude

Thanksgiving is just a month from tomorrow. In the days leading up to this day where we tend to particularly focus upon being thankful, take time to be thankful - to look around you with "eyes of gratitude"; and consider challenging your grandchildren to do the same.

To help you with this, try one - or more of the following ideas . . .

crafting with grandma - Simple Snowman!

winter craftOkay, please don't interpret my posting of snowpeople crafts as a message which says I'm looking forward to snow . . . I most certainly am not! However; I really do love non-snow snowpeople and as I browsed on Pinterest I saw this idea for a simple snowman even preschoolers are able to make . . . and one which reuses creamer bottles!

Reader's Christmas Crafts!

Nine years ago I had a Christmas Ornament/Decoration Contest, and wonderful ideas were shared, so I thought it would be fun today to go back and see those great ideas once again . . .

A Fantastic, Free Apologetics Resource for You

It would be challenging to read my posts and not see I am completely convinced we must teach the ones we love the "whys" - why we are able to believe in God and trust His Word with confidence. So, today I am very happy to write about a fantastic, free resource i found last evening on the Gospel Coalition's website - One-Minute Apologetics videos!

A Place Where Disciples are Hand-Made

I posted this yesterday on my other blog - Grandmas with Heart - and thought I'd share it with you today.

I love this quote from David Kinnaman (from the Barna Group.) While certainly the church has a role in communicating truth to children and teens, we will most effectively do so in the context of close relationships. Yes, churches are able to build these types of relationships with children and teens, but parents and grandparents are ideally placed by God to do so.

crafting with grandma - Wood Pumpkins!

Apparently in some places it is difficult to find real pumpkins this Fall, so if you have not been able to find a real pumpkin, or if you just might like to make a very cute, easy and inexpensive wood pumpkin, then this post is for you! These pumpkins look so fun and like an item children could make - as long as the cutting is finished, so all the parts are ready for them to complete. Or, if you are participating in any Fall craft sales, these little pumpkins are sure to be a big hit!

We Have a Winner!

crafting with grandma - Nativity Ornament

Nativity Ornament Wood Craft TutorialIt is so easy for children to focus on the "getting" part of Christmas . . . what gifts will they "get"? What activities will they "get" to do? How many parties will they "get" to go to? The list goes on. But, Christmas is really about giving, God gave His Son to us! Well . . . I guess it is also about "getting" as we are the ones who "get" to receive the gift of Grace and forgiveness from God!

grandma's chuckles - God Can't Get to Heaven in a Rocket!

Don't you just love a child's view of God?!!! They have the most profound questions! I remember nine years ago when my then four year old grandson and I were talking before bed and I told him how God loved him sooo much He even had his name written on His hand! My grandson told me his full name, then said; "My name is a big name, but God's hand is big! His hand is big enough for my name!" The smile of delight on his face made my heart so happy!

Hugs Help

When my grandsons were little, they would at times get a rascally twinkle in their eyes and tell me, "Hugs and kisses are weird!" I typically pretended to be shocked and tell them, "Hugs and kisses are NOT weird; they are wonderful!" They always laughed and repeated their rascally saying, while laughing, a LOT, but I typically ended up receiving a hug and kiss - happy grandma for sure!

Crochet Some Cozy Slippers

When I was eight my grandma gave me a, "learn to crochet" kit for Christmas. So, after Christmas I walked down the street to her house for her to teach me to crochet. My hands would not cooperate, so being an obnoxious eight-year old, I told her, "I hate crocheting and crocheting is for old people." This did not make my grandma very happy. I never thought again about crocheting until 20 years later when I saw a cute pattern I wanted to make. So, I asked my sister to show me how to crochet - which she did - and now I crochet a lot! Occasionally my husband asks me; "Now, who did you say crocheting was for?!!!"

crafting with grandma - Minimal Sew, No Crochet, No Knit Infinity Scarves!

Over the years I've been writing grandma's cookie jar, I've shared a number of crochet patterns with you - since I enjoy crocheting! From time to time, some of you have commented about how you like the patterns, but do not crochet; so, this one today is for you! A great idea for making no sew, no knit, no crochet infinity scarves which you can keep and give as gifts!

Embellished keys - easy Christmas craftOkay, I know it is a huge inconsistency  for me. I truly do not like snow. It is cold, wet, cold, unpleasant to drive in, and did I mention it is cold? However; in spite of how much I do not like snow - it is after all, cold - I love snow people! I decorate with the cute snow people all year long because I really love snow people! One of my favorite photos of Josiah is from several years ago when he and his momma built a snow-bear - sooo cute!

grandma's chuckles - "I Look Rediculeeous!"

Image result for clipart for cowboy heartsSix years ago I shared the following with you - it brought a smile to my face this morning when I remembered it, so I'm sharing it again.

"On Wednesdays I pick my grandsons up from school, hang out with them, and then take them to my church for the mid-week children's program . . . Kids 'N Action. This program has a bit of a Western 'flair' and children work through the Book of James in five years (one chapter a year) memorizing each chapter and learning about how they can put their faith into action.

Teach the "Whats" & the "Whys"

I know I write often about how much it matters for us to be grandparents (parents) who hand down confident faith by teaching the "whats" and the "whys", but there is a reason I do this - because it is true. Yes, we absolutely must teach the ones we love what we believe - what the Bible says. We want them to know what they believe, so we teach them. But, if we stop there, we have not fully handed down confident faith. We have not equipped them to stand firmly when they are asked why they believe what they believe - and they will be asked.

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies

My grandsons enjoy cookies, but one of their favorites is chocolate chip, peanut  butter cookies. When they were younger it was not unusual for them to go straight to the cookie jar when they arrived at my house - which was typically followed with very happy smiles on their faces!

crafting with grandma - Sweet Wire Angel Ornaments

wire angel tutorialChristmas is just two months away!!! Yes, just two months and the time is certain to fly. Since it is getting chilly outside - been in the low 50's for the past few evenings (which in the Spring seems like a heat wave, but here in the Fall is downright chilly!), so my thoughts turn towards Christmas! If you are planning to make any gifts for people on your list . . . and/or items to decorate your own home, now is definitely the time to be working on these projects!
