Fun Science Project

My grandsons love science projects . . . one reason I included science projects in my curriculum - Generations Quest - Cultivate the Faith! They are such engaging, "hands-on" and memorable ways to help my grandsons learn important things. So, I am always on the watch for new projects which I can try with my grandsons.

Today I'm happy to share one lesson and the activities which go with it . . .

Week 1 God Hears & Answers Our Prayers! Jeremiah 29:11-14a; 33:2, 3 & 1 John 5:14, 15

SCIENCE –Elephant Toothpaste WHAT YOU’LL DO Lead children in a science experiment which will help them think about how God hears and answers our prayers; and when He does, amazing things happen! You can either have your grandchildren/children work on one project or give each of them their own supplies.

SUPPLIES:  Soda bottle  Peroxide  Dish soap  Food coloring  1 t yeast dissolved in 2 T very warm water  Funnel  Pan
  • Have children place their empty bottle in a pan and put a funnel in the bottle.
  • Help children measure 1/2 cup peroxide and add a few drops of food coloring, then pour into their bottle.
  • Add a squirt of dish soap.
  • Measure 1 teaspoon of yeast into a cup or small bowl, add 2 tablespoons hot water and stir with a spoon until dissolved.
  • Quickly pour yeast mixture into bottle— remove funnel and stand back!
Talk with the children about what happened when they added the yeast to their project. Wrap up with something along the lines of: For this project you used simple, everyday supplies, but when they were combined you had a surprising result! God wants us to talk with Him about big things, but also about everyday, regular things, too. When we do, He promises to hear and answer us and this is truly amazing!

The Bible Adventure — READ IT!: Open your Bibles and read the following passages -
  • Jeremiah 29:11-14a
  • Jeremiah 33:2, 3
  • 1 John 5:14, 15
TALK ABOUT IT: Talk together about the verses you read; emphasize the following—
SUPPLIES:  Bibles  Prayer notebook—one per child  Crayons/Markers/Colored pencils
  • God has a plan for each of us—ask what these verses tell us about God’s plans (they are for our good and give us hope.)
  • God wants us to call out to Him and pray - He will listen to us.
  • When we seek Him with all our heart, God promises we will find Him!
  • God created everything and yet, if we call upon Him, He promises to answer us!
  • Talk about how God promises when we pray according to what He wants, He will hear and answer us!
  • Talk about specific things you will do to seek God this week; have children share what they will do, too.
  • Have children write/draw in their notebooks what they will pray about this week. Spend time praying together.
  • Talk about how amazing it is to know God promises to listen to our prayers and to be found by us!
Scripture prayer— Dear God, please help me choose to obey You today. Thank You for the joy You give when I love and think about Your Word. Thank You for being with me always and for Your love for me; I love You, too! Amen.

The Fun! — Choose activities as you like —
  • Games
    • Active Games
    • Board Games
  • Craft
    • Photo Journals -
      • Let children choose photos of themselves/ their family which you will print for them.
      • Let children cut the photos out then tape/glue to the cover of their journal.
      • Cover with clear con-tac paper or packing tape.
      • Say—Each week we will be spending time talking with God. Your journal gives you a place to write/draw your requests as well as how God answers them! It will be fun to see how God does this as we learn how to talk with Him this year.
    • Nature Walk! -
      • Go on a nature walk and enjoy creation!
      • As you walk, look for items you will use in crafts in the coming weeks.
      • Take photos of your grandchildren/children enjoying their walk, finding something interesting or just having fun!
