Just for Fun!!! More "Sand" Facts!

As you go through this day, take a moment to share a few more fun "sand" facts with the children you love! Did you know . . .

  • The Barking Sands Beach on the Hawaiian island of Kauai is known for its unusual sand which squeaks or “barks like a dog.” The dry sand grains make an eerie sound when rubbed with bare feet.
  • The sand on the coast of Namibia (in southwest Africa) is definitely worth sifting. It contains diamonds!
  • You’ll find green sand, yes, green, in Guam! There is also a green beach on the big island of Hawaii. The sand is green because of the concentration of olivine crystals from a surrounding lava cone. The waves remove the lighter grains of sand leaving the denser olivine crystals behind to form the beach. Olivine is a mineral found in basalt lava.
  • The typical peanut butter and jelly sandwich eaten on a beach contains over 7,000 grains of sand!
I'd love it if we had diamond sands on Lake Michigan - not far from where I live! Which sand fact did you find to be the most interesting?
