Yesterday Was National Polka Dot Day!

Apparently I missed a "holiday" which I would have enjoyed celebrating . . . yesterday, January 22nd, was National Polka Dot Day! I enjoy wearing glasses with polka dots - they add such a fun touch to my glasses for sure! (I'm wearing my Pride Party Dots topper and Holiday Bauble with Foil Crystal topper both from Pride Eyewear.)

I read about this "spotty" holiday and learned it is intended to celebrate Minnie Mouse - she does wear polka dots. But I think it is a day to enjoy these dots beyond the Mouse for sure! Here are a few ways to celebrate - even the day after the technical "holiday" -

How to Celebrate -
  • Wear Polka Dots: Sport your favorite polka dot outfits, from dresses to accessories, to pay homage to Minnie Mouse.
  • Watch Minnie: Revisit classic Minnie Mouse shows or movies for a dose of nostalgia.
  • Embrace the Pattern: Find polka dots in art, home decor, or even bake polka dot treats, as the pattern extends beyond clothing.
  • Channel Minnie: Use the day as an inspiration to be authentic, bold, and spread joy, just like Minnie.
  • Minnie Mouse Icon: Minnie Mouse, first appearing in 1928, made polka dots a fashion staple, symbolizing fun and whimsy.
  • Beyond Disney: While Minnie is central, the day also acknowledges other icons who wore polka dots, like Shirley Temple, Marilyn Monroe, and artists like Yayoi Kusama.
  • Timeless Trend: Polka dots have moved from flapper rebellion to high fashion, proving their lasting appeal.
Here are a few fun facts to share with the children you love about polka dots -

Q. Where did polka dots originate?
A. Polka dots originated in Swiss textile design in the 1850s and went by many names including Swiss Dots.

Q. Who can wear polka dots?
A. Polka dots are a fun, classy design that can be worn by anyone.

Q. Are there polka dot songs?
A. Yes. Perhaps the most famous is "Itsy Bitsy Teen Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" by Brian Hyland. Another is "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" sung by a variety of artists including Sarah Vaughn, John Denver, and Barry Manilow.

So, gather the children you love and find some fun ways to celebrate the polka dot - be sure to take photos!
