Daisy Fun Facts . . . They Grow Everywhere Except for Antarctica!

While some may think of Daisies as a weed, they are one of my favorite flowers! I especially love Shasta Daisies and Gerber Daisies, but all are pretty in my eyes! So, here are some fun facts about Daisies . . .

  • They are actually two flowers in one—a central cluster of disk florets surrounded by ray florets—and belong to the same family as sunflowers.
  • They are found globally except for Antarctica.
  • The name comes from the Old English dægesege, meaning "day’s eye," because they close their petals at night and open them at dawn.
  •  The leaves are high in Vitamin C and are a great addition to salads, while the flowers have historically been used to treat coughs and bruises.
  • While the classic daisy is white, they come in many colors—except blue, which are created artificially.
  • A type of daisy can be found in bloom somewhere in the world during every month of the year and make up 10% of all flowers on Earth!
