Lilies - Toxic for Cats, But Tasty for People!

I love it when the lilies start to bloom - in my yard, alongside the road, and of course throughout Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park - I do find lilies to be such a beautiful flower, so today is a day to share some fun facts about lilies with you, so you can share them with the children you love . . .

  • There are more than 100 species of Lilies.
  • Not a "fun" fact, but since I have a cat and my grands have three cats, this is important to know - Lilies are extremely poisonous to cats; ingesting even small amounts can cause fatal kidney failure.
  • Lily bulbs have been used as a food source in China and Korea for centuries and have also been used in traditional medicine.
  • Lilies can develop from both a bulb and a seed, and grow anywhere from two to six feet in height depending on the species.
  • Lilies grow in nearly every shape and color!
