Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About Nunavut

Today I'm very happy to let you know about Nunavut - the largest and youngest Territory in Canada! This "Lost Canadian" is very impressed with Nunavut - it is an extremely interesting and unique place.

  • Nunavut was established on April 1, 1999 making it the youngest Territory in Canada.
  • It is Canada’s largest province/territory with a total area of 2,093,190 sq. km. (almost 1 million square miles) - it covers one-fifth of Canada's total land area.
  • Nunavut means "our land" in Inuktitut, and is home to 85% of the Inuktitut people who have lived there for more than 4000 years.
  • The most common languages spoken in Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English, and French.
  • Nunavut is Home to 75% of the world’s narwhals, and the largest land carnivore, the polar bear.
