Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About Nahanni National Park Reserve

If your favorite National Parks include mountains, water falls, rivers, caves, and lots of nature, then Nahanni National Park Reserve in the Northwest Territory is absolutely a place you want to visit!

  • Nahanni National Park Reserve is the first natural World Heritage Site in Canada.
  • The South Nahanni River flows for hundreds of kilometers, it cuts through four massive canyons (some reaching 1,000 meters deep) and is considered one of North America's premier whitewater destinations.
  • The Cirque of the Unclimbables is renowned among world-class rock climbers, this area features sheer granite spires which challenge even the most experienced mountaineers.
  • Nahanni National Park Reserve is also home to complex cave systems, hot springs, and Canada's largest tufa mounds.
  • The vast 30,000-square-kilometer reserve—about the size of Belgium—is mostly untouched by roads or modern development.
  • Nahanni National Park Reserve is home to grizzly and black bears, wolves, moose, mountain caribou, and over 170 recorded bird species.
