CHIHULY Yellow Herons at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

I am blessed to currently live outside Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is where Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is located. My husband and I have a membership and tend to visit nearly every week. There are so many beautiful and amazing things to see all year long at Meijer Gardens, but this is even more true now through November 1st as the Dale Chihuly exhibit is able to be enjoyed throughout the Sculpture Park. I thought it would be interesting to share with you some information I found online about the beautiful sculptures and a bit of background on each piece - starting with CHIHULY Yellow Herons.

Yellow Herons is a signature blown-glass sculpture and botanical garden installation created by American artist Dale Chihuly. First conceived around 2007, the curvaceous, slender yellow glass forms mimic the elegant shapes of wading birds.

Design and Structure
  • Form: Tall, slender, curving vertical glass stalks that taper gracefully like the necks or bodies of herons.
  • Color: Vibrant, translucent yellow hues designed to catch and reflect sunlight.
  • Dimensions: A representative 2007 composition measures roughly 73 x 87 x 62 inches.
Notable Exhibitions
  • Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park: Featured prominently in the Japanese Garden as part of major seasonal exhibitions in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
  • Global Botanical Displays: Exhibited internationally in famous horticulture and museum spaces, including Kew Gardens (London), Gardens by the Bay (Singapore), and The Society of the Four Arts (Florida).
Yellow Herons is in the Japanese Garden near the waterfalls and is one of my personal favorites! When my youngest grand visited Meijer Gardens with us to see the Chihuly exhibit, he thought the Yellow Herons looked kinda like birds - and they do!

It is my opinion the Yellow Herons are in the perfect location for them - in the little lake, near the waterfalls - I could easily picture actual herons enjoying the water and possibly finding a fish!

If you live near Frederik Meijer Gardens, or are able to visit before November 1, 2026, be sure to check out the Chihuly exhibit - I do believe you will be so glad you do!
