Make Some Orange Swirl Ice Cream!

My youngest grandchild asked me to make orange swirl ice cream - I have a new ice cream maker attachment for my KitchenAid Mixer which I reviewed at this link. So, of course I looked for a recipe to make orange swirl ice cream! I am grandma - what else would I do? I am happy to share the recipe I found online with you . . .

Ingredients & Tools
  • Ice Cream Base:
    • Heavy cream (2 cups)
    • Whole milk (1 cup)
    • Granulated sugar (3/4 cup)
    • Orange juice (1/2 cup) - freshly squeezed is best
    • Orange zest (1 tbsp)
    • Vanilla extract (1 tbsp)
  • The Swirl:
    • Orange marmalade or high-quality orange jam (1/2 cup)
  • Required Equipment:
    • Electric ice cream maker (such as Cuisinart) or attachment for KitchenAid like I will be using.
Instructions
  1. Mix the Base: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract until completely smooth and the sugar has dissolved.
  2. Churn: Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker. Process according to the manufacturer's directions, which usually takes about 20 to 25 minutes, until the mixture reaches a thick, soft-serve consistency.
  3. Swirl and Freeze: Transfer the thick ice cream to a chilled, freezer-safe container. Spoon the orange marmalade on top and gently drag a butter knife or spatula through the ice cream to create a marbled, swirled effect. Do not overmix.
  4. Harden: Freeze the swirled ice cream in your freezer for 3-4 hours to reach a scoopable consistency.
Recipe Variations
  • No-Churn Method: If you do not have an ice cream maker, you can whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form, fold in sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract, and then fold in the orange marmalade. Freeze for at least 6 hours.
  • Alternative Swirls: For a slightly different flavor profile, you can swap the orange marmalade for a dark chocolate sauce to create a chocolate-orange creamsicle.
I will not be using the orange marmalade and plan to make a batch of vanilla ice cream which I will put in the bottom of my storage bowl, and then the orange ice cream which I will put on top of the vanilla ice cream. We will see how it turns out!

So what do you think? Will you try this recipe for your family?

Enjoy!
