Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About Immigration

There has been a lot of talk in the USA, and around the world, about the recent Supreme Court decision which upheld the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the USA about birthright citizenship. In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court struck down a 2025 executive order by the Trump administration which sought to end birthright citizenship. The Court’s decision reinforced longstanding interpretations of the Constitution, which have been in place for over a century, firmly protecting automatic citizenship for children born to undocumented parents or those with temporary legal status.

As a person who was born in the USA, and who has some ancestors who actually arrived to this country on the Mayflower, I felt joy and relief to see the Supreme Court decide (barely) to uphold the Constitution against the massively corrupt current occupant of the White House. I am sad to see not all the justices voted to do this.

It breaks my heart to watch as this country struggles with decisions from the White House which put immigrants in danger. All of us in North America were immigrants at some point in time - we should welcome those who want to work to make their lives and the lives of their families as good as they can be.

As I think about the past year and a half and the attacks on immigrants in the USA, it makes me SO thankful to know there are places, such as Canada, which look at immigrants in a completely different way. I am SO thankful to know Canada is welcoming "Lost Canadians" - such as myself, my children, and grandchildren - and we have the opportunity to receive citizenship since a great many of our ancestors were Canadians!
