Since the middle of April when I learned I am a "Lost Canadian", I've been learning about Canada. While I have learned many things, there clearly are a great many things I still do not know and have yet to learn. Today I'm sharing some of the unique things I've learned about the Canadian Province of Prince Edward Island. Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province, famous for its striking red soil, red sandstone cliffs, and the literary backdrop of Anne of Green Gables. You are never more than 15 minutes from a beach here, and the region boasts unique natural and structural highlights.
Striking Geography and Beaches
- Red Sand and Soil: High iron oxide content in the bedrock gives the earth and coastal cliffs a vibrant red color.
- Singing Sands: Basin Head Provincial Park features fine white-and-red quartz sand that makes a squeaking or singing sound when walked on due to high silica content.
- Warm Waters: The southern shores boast some of the warmest ocean water north of Florida during summer.
- Proximity to Sea: No point on the island is more than 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the ocean.
