Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About My Ancestor's Roots in Quebec City, Québec, Canada

I grew up in Michigan and have lived here nearly all of my life. I thought my ancestors came from France, England, and Germany - which some of them did, but I did not know I had even one ancestor from Canada. Come to find out, I have more than 82 ancestors from Canada - and more than half of them are from Quebec! While these ancestors are from many parts of Quebec, nine of them are from Quebec in Quebec, Canada - from as far back as the 1660's . . .

Quebec City transformed from a small French fur-trading post into the administrative heart of New France, a British colonial stronghold, and the modern capital of Quebec's provincial government.
New France and French Rule (1660s–1759)
  • Capital of the Colony: In 1663, King Louis XIV made Quebec City the capital of New France under direct royal rule.
  • Two-Level Layout: The city split into a lower town for trade, docks, and merchants, and an upper town for government offices, the Seminary (founded 1663), and religious institutions like the Ursuline Convent.
  • Military Fortress: Perched high on Cap Diamont, the natural cliffside and early fortifications allowed cannons to control passage on the St. Lawrence River.
  • Sieges: The city successfully fought off naval attacks, including a major English siege in 1690.
