grandma's cookbook - Peanut-Butter Ice Cream Pie!!!

My family LOVES peanut-butter pie! I've been making it for years . . . ever since my sister shared the recipe with me when I was first married . . . my family has been forever grateful to my sister for this! :^)


Well, the other day I was thinking about what dessert I wanted to make for Memorial Day, and it occurred to me, if I "tweaked" the recipe just a bit and substituted ice cream for the whipped cream, I might end up with a wonderful, new pie! So, I told my family they were going to be "guinea pigs" for a new peanut-butter pie recipe with ice cream in it . . . they said they were completely willing to be "guinia pigs" for that recipe! :^)


I'm very happy to say, the pie turned out wonderfully! It is extremely delicious . . . and makes a wonderful summer pie! So . . . I'm delighted to share my new peanut-butter ice cream pie recipe with you . . . 

So . . . What Is Your Real Focus?

When I decided to write this blog, along with using it to share resources, reviews, recipes, craft ideas, etc - lots of fun things - I wanted it to have a real purpose . . . real meaning. So, I developed a "reason" - vision - for grandma's cookie jar . . . "just as grandma's cookie jar should always be full of good things, this blog will be full of good ideas, information, activities and reviews of things to help grandma . . . and grandpa, mom and dad too . . . pass on a heritage of faith to the children in their lives!" I believe a grandma - and grandpa, mom and/or dad - should most certainly enjoy the opportunities they have to "enjoy the good things" with their grandchildren/children, but always be watching for the opportunities to connect those "good things" back to our faith so we are able to pass on a heritage of faith to our grandchildren/children. There is NOTHING more important to me than to know my children and grandchildren know, love and want to walk with God every day! So, while grandma's cookie jar has - and will continue to have - a lot of "fun" things in it, there is a reason . . . a point . . . a focus for all the "fun" . . . to "pass on a heritage of faith"!

Do Not Be Afraid!

What are you afraid of? Well, if you are like me the first thing you think of is spiders! I do not like those hideous creatures at all! In fact, I firmly believe the only good spider is a completely dead spider; so one of my rules when my kids were growing up was, "kill all spiders and then kill them again!" And just so you know, there is no such thing as a "small" spider! 


Josiah spent the night at our house last night and this morning I saw a spider on the ceiling! I screamed - "Aaaaahhhh!" Josiah looked up and said, "There's a spider on the ceiling, Poppa!" Poppa - and Josiah - killed the spider - Josiah said they were both brave - and of course I completely agree!


Well, beyond the obvious things, like spiders, what are you afraid of? More specifically, what are you afraid of when it comes to your family? Are you afraid of the "what ifs"? What if the get sick? What if they get in an accident? What if the things in this world entice my children/grandchildren and they do not walk with God? What if . . . ? You may say you aren't "afraid" of these things, but how much time to you spend thinking - or even worrying - about them? These are all legitimate things to be concerned about, but we do not have to be afraid.

crafting with grandma - Memorial Day Hand-Print Flag

As I browsed on Pinterest today, I found a fun idea for making a flag with your grandchildren's/children's handprints . . . it seemed like a fun idea for Memorial Day, so I decided to share it with you! All you need is, paint, a bucket of water, paper towels and a large, rectangular piece of cardboard or construction paper. Have the children - adults, too if you want - who are at your Memorial Day barbecue dip their hands in the paint, and make handprints for the stars and stripes in your flag! Hang the finished project - be sure to date the back and write who made the handprints and you have a simple, inexpensive and personal way to remember Memorial Day 2012! (You could make a new flag each year - a fun, new family tradition!) Be sure to talk with your grandchildren about  why we celebrate Memorial Day. Lead them in praying for families who have someone they love serving in the military. Pray for families who have someone who they love who died while serving in the military, and if you know a military family, make an extra flag and take it to them to tell them thank-you for their sacrifice!

If  you are like me, you are probably going to be spending at least part of your Memorial Day with your family. So, if you might like a fun, simple and inexpensive craft you could make with your grandchildren, check out this Wind-Catcher I saw on Pinterest! All you need to make this is wire, plastic table cloths, pliers, fishing line and scissors! Have fun making these with your grandchildren and as you do, talk with them about why we celebrate Memorial Day. Lead them in praying for families who have someone they love serving in the military. Pray for families who have someone who they love who died while serving in the military, and if you know a military family, make an extra wind-catcher and take it to them to tell them thank-you for their sacrifice!

It can be a huge challenge to find resources you can use with your family to challenge them to walk closer with God . . . especially when your children are teens. When my children were teens, I found the book, " It's a Jungle Out There" and not only did my teens sit and participate in our family devotions, they asked for more! So, when it comes to some of my favorite things, this book is absolutely on my list of favorite books as it is sure to get your grandchildren/children listening, laughing and talking about how they can know God more! (This book is out of print, and is difficult to find, but if you click on the link in this post, you can still get it on Amazon!)

Sneak Peek at a New VeggieTales - The Penniless Princess

Through the years there have been some truly delightful VeggieTales stories . . . I particularly enjoyed Lord of the Beans, It's a Meaningful Life and Pistachio! But I have been waiting - ever since I heard it was in production - for the release of The Penniless Princess, so you can imagine how happy I was to receive the review copy in the mail! VeggieTales, the Penniless Princess - God's Little Girl releases on August 11th . . . yes, I know it is still quite a ways away, but as the date nears, I'll post a more thorough review and announce give-aways!!! Hooray! I get to give a couple away!!!!

grandma's cookbook - Father's Day Truffles!

Father's Day is just a month away, and if the dads in your life are like the dads in my life, they are usually difficult to find a perfect gift for them! So, when I was browsing on Pinterest yesterday and saw a recipe for M&M Cookie Dough Truffles . . . well, they looked to me like Father's Day Truffles! (I know my hubby LOVES M&M's and cookie dough!) 


At first I was concerned about making truffles with raw eggs, but when I checked the recipe, I found there are no eggs! Just follow the link and you will find the recipe, which looks pretty straight-forward and simple. This is a recipe which you could easily involve your grandchildren in making for their dads . . . of course, they will enjoy eating them with their dads, too! As you make these with your grandchildren, lead them in thanking God for their dad and in praying for him - which of course is the best Father's Day gift ever . . . the prayers of his children! Enjoy!

grandma's cookbook - Lemonade, Tea and Wonderful Glasses!

Yesterday I posted about one of my favorite things - square Fiesta Ware plates! I really like my plates because they are different - square shaped - and somewhat "eclectic" - different colors! Just as I like my somewhat eclectic plates, I like my somewhat eclectic cup/glasses! Since I have MS, I prefer acrylic glasses . . . if I drop them, they are not likely to break - this is also a benefit for a grandma with young grandchildren! - and they are lightweight.  So, when I saw Clearly Acrylic's selection of glasses, I was happy to review a few!

When I was a child my grandma had Fiesta Ware dishes - whenever we ate at her house I always hoped I would get to eat off the sunny yellow plates! So, when I had the opportunity to review some of Fiesta Ware's new square dinnerware - well, I was very happy to do so!

This Grandma Has a Happy Heart!

My grandsons, Josiah and Caleb, spent Saturday evening and night at my house . . . slept over and then went to church with us on Sunday morning. Josiah is three and Caleb is almost one . . . which means Caleb is starting to get into EVERYTHING! He can walk if he is holding on to something and when it comes to crawling . . . well, to say he is "zippy" is to put it mildly! This little boy can really "zoom" across the floor when he is crawling! Needless to say, when he is here, we block off access to the things we need to keep Caleb away from, such as the front of the TV/stereo - Caleb LOVES to push buttons :^) - and power cords and anything else he should not be getting into! You all know what I'm talking about . . . baby-proofing the house!


So, Sunday morning as we were getting ready for church, Josiah noticed a spot we hadn't "blocked" and quickly ran to get his "super dream car" to put in front of the outlet because he wanted to "protect" his baby brother! It made me so happy to see Josiah was keeping an eye out for his little brother and wanted to do what he could to be sure he was safe! When I see this three year old paying attention to someone else and caring if he is safe, I'm happy! I told Josiah I was so happy to see he was showing his love for Caleb and showing he has Jesus' love inside him! Don't you just love it when your grandchildren show love and concern for others!!! It certainly gives me a happy heart! :^)

In other parts of the world hats are a "staple" for most women's wardrobes, but not so here in the USA. However; as I browse on Pinterest, from time to time I see a pattern for a crocheted hat, which I add to my "boards". So, today I thought I'd share a couple of these patterns with you. 


I like the one with the bow . . . depending on the color and the yarn you choose this could be a sweet hat for any time of year. I will be making one of these! I am going to make the one with the flower . . . I think this could be a great hat for summer! I'll let you know how it turns out!

As I said yesterday, Children's Day is just a month away! So, if you are looking for something special which you could make for the special children in your life . . . look at this cute little Teddy Bear - which of course I found on Pinterest! If you follow this link, you'll find a crochet pattern and you can make a whole "den" of sweet bears!


This pattern would also be perfect if you are looking for one which you could use to make bears to give a homeless shelter, or children's hospital or to send to missionaries or for your youth group to give away when they are on a mission trip. Involve your older grandchildren in making these bears and as they do pray with them for the children who will receive them!

Free For You . . . One Illustrate My Own Bible Heroes Book!

As you have likely noticed, I LOVE story books for children! I really LOVE Bible story books which introduce children to people from the Bible, so when those people are some of the "unknown" heroes . . . well, I especially LOVE those stories! So, a few years ago I sat down and wrote several Unknown Bible Hero books, but since I'm not really an illustrator, I thought it would be fun to write the books so children could be their own illustrator and illustrate their own book!

Children's Day . . . Make a Castle and Illustrate Your Own Book!

In four weeks, on June 10th it will be Children's Day!!! I love to celebrate Children's Day . . . after all, we do celebrate Mother's Day, Father's Day and even Grandparent's Day, so why not a Children's Day?!!! While every day should be a day where we love and cherish the children in our lives, having one special day where we take a moment to reaffirm to these gifts from God how much we love them and how glad we are they are part of our family . . . well, I'm all for it!


So, for the coming month, I'll be sharing some fun ideas for things you might make or get for the children in your life! Today I want to share a fun pattern for a Whimsical Castle you could crochet!  Of course I found this pattern on Pinterest, so if you follow this link, you will find a free pattern from Bizzy Crochet - which is a blog well worth checking out and following! This pattern is fairly simple and fun and would be a great surprise for your young grandchildren. You could even give the castle to all of your grandchildren and then give them individual characters so they can share and play together!

I discovered a couple days ago I had not shared my favorite lemon bar recipe with you yet. I couldn't believe it, so today I'm remedying this today by sharing a recipe for lemon bars with you! I really do enjoy lemon bars - the butter cookie bottom and soft, tart lemon topping . . . a wonderful treat! My favorite recipe is straight from the Better Homes and Gardens cook book I received when I was first married - nearly 31 years ago! Sometimes the older recipes are truly the best ones . . . so here it is, and enjoy!

My grandson Josiah is three years old and he loves "Maisy" books! Why wouldn't he? "Maisy" books have parts which move and are so much fun! So, when Candlewick Press had a new Maisy book for me to review, I happily said, "Yes!"

One More Birthday Month Give-Away - Lego Cars 2 Set!

I don't know about your house, but around this grandma's house, Cars is a favorite movie and all things "Cars" are wonderful! So, when Lego sent me their Spy Jet Escape building set from the Cars 2 collection, well I was very happy to review it - and tucked it away until the boys are old enough for it! I was also delighted when I discovered they sent me two sets . . . so I'm going to give one away!

grandma's chuckles . . . My Name is Grandma!

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there! Being a mom is one of the best things of my life . . . and being a grandma brings back all those wonderful "mom moments" from when my two children were young! If you are not a mom or a grandma, find a child who needs a "mom" or a "grandma" and be an "almost-mom" or an "almost-grandma" to them! All children need the love a mom and a grandma can give and all children benefit from having a mom and a grandma in their lives!


So, on this Mother's Day, I thought I'd share something Josiah recently said, which made my heart happy and made me laugh! He was spending the night a couple weeks back and as he went to bed Dave, my husband, said, "Good-night, Josiah! Good-night, Lynda!" Josiah's eyes got big and he looked at his Poppa and said, "Her (pointing at me) name is NOT Lynda! Her name is Grandma!!!" :^) 


I think "Grandma" is a wonderful name and I'm very happy to have Josiah and Caleb be able to call me by "my name"!

I love sunflowers! Who doesn't?!! They are so bright and cheerful, so when I found a pattern on Pinterest for crocheted sunflowers, well, of course I had to share it with you! This pattern makes a good sized sunflower, so if you want to put it on your crocheted summer hat, you'd need to reduce the size - use smaller hooks and yarn and see if you can get it to a size which would fit! What could be more summery than a sunflower on a summer hat? Have fun!

I don't know about where you live, but here in West Michigan, it is finally getting warm! It is going to be in the 70's all week this coming week . . . summer is just around the corner! It has been a long, cold winter - at least for me - so I'm very happy to see the warm weather arrive! 


As I was browsing on Pinterest, I found a pattern for a crocheted Summer hat and thought it would be the perfect craft to share with you all! It looks so summery . . . I'm sure I'll be making a few of them! If you follow the links to the free pattern, you'll find directions for making infant, child and adult hats . . . you could make them for all the girls in your family! What fun!!!!!

A Simple Mother's Day Idea Which Will Be Treasured!

Our grandchildren grow up so fast . . . just as our children did. I'm very thankful for photos and for handprints which help me remember them when they were little . . . so when I saw this handprint idea on Pinterest, I knew I had to share it with you!


Handprint Flowers! How sweet! Just think of all the places where you could help your grandchildren make these special flowers for their mothers for mother's day! They could make a bouquet of "flowers" with each child's "flower" a different color - this way mom will be able to easily tell which "flower" is from each of her children! They could then frame their bouquet picture for a gift any mom - and grandma - will treasure! They could make cards, trivets using larger ceramic tiles . . . the possibilities aren't "endless", but they are varied! What might you put your grandchildren's handprint "flowers" on?

If you have a granddaughter, you might like this link I found on Pinterest where you can download and print out lots of fun paper dolls!  Just follow the links from Heritage Paper Doll's site; print the dolls on card stock and the dresses on a sturdy paper - you could also add some special markers, colored pencils and/or crayons so your granddaughter could have great fun coloring the clothes for her dolls! They would make wonderful Children's Day gifts for your granddaughters! You could print a few extra sets so your granddaughters could color them and then give them to friends or to children who they know who need to have their day brightened!
