"There’s a Wocket in My Pocket- A Rhyming Scavenger Hunt"!!!!

DSCI3507WooHoo!!!! Today is Thursday!!!! Why, you ask, is the fact today is Thursday worthy of a "woohoo"? On Thursdays, when my husband gets out of work, he picks up our sweet grandsons and brings them home where they spend the night and usually all day Friday until their parents come for supper and then take them home. So . . . Thursdays are our weekly sleep-over night! Like I said, "WooHoo!!!!!" I LOVE Thursdays!!!!!

DSCI3501Since Saturday is Dr. Seuss' birthday and the boys will be here tomorrow, I thought I'd find something fun to do with them to "celebrate". So, I browsed on Pinterest and found an idea I absolutely LOVE . . . a "There’s a Wocket in My Pocket- A Rhyming Scavenger Hunt"!!!!

Let's Celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday!

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' birthday . . . so, I thought I'd share some fun links for crafts and recipes you could use with your grandchildren to celebrate Dr. Seuss!

The BIBLE - and a Fun Give-Away!

This Sunday, March 3, 2013, the History Channel will be the start of an "epic" ten-part mini-series which re-tells Scripture accounts with all the drama and excitement which should accompany these accounts! Executive producers Roma Downey (Touched By an Angel) and Mark Burnett (Amazing Race & Survivor) describe The Bible in this way; "Breathtaking in scope and scale, The Bible features powerful performances, exotic locales and dazzling visual effects that breathe spectacular life into the dramatic tales of faith and courage from Genesis through Revelation. This historic television event is sure to entertain and inspire the whole family!"

Check this "countdown" and enjoy the features as we count-down to the start of The Bible . . .  (post your results and which Bible account you are most looking forward to seeing)

grandma's cookbook - Herbed Chicken

If you are looking for a way to fix chicken which is flavorful, healthy and simple, check this recipe! All you need is chicken - I use boneless, skinless breasts, but you can use any part of the chicken - apples, herbs, a bit of butter and a slow-cooker!

Place your chicken in the slow-cooker, sprinkle generously with herbs - I used rosemary, basil, thyme and marjoram - cut apples in half and remove cores then place around the chicken, add a bit of butter and 1 1/2 - 2 cups of water. Cover and cook for six hours. Not only will your home be filled with a wonderful aroma as the chicken cooks, but you will end up with tender, flavorful chicken which your whole family can enjoy! Add mashed potatoes - the broth makes amazing gravy - fresh bread from the bread machine, peas - or any veggie - and you have a wonderful meal . . . the left-over chicken and broth can be used for homemade soup the next day! This chicken dinner is perfect for when you have company as it takes little time to prepare, but the "pay-off" is wonderful! Enjoy!

grandma's bookshelf - Because Amelia Smiled - I'm Giving One Away!

Smiles have power. They have the power to brighten the day of others and as Maralee McKee, the Manners Mentor said yesterday on her page, "Your smile (or lack of one) is powerful. When given sincerely, it uplifts both those you love and strangers alike. It's your non-verbal signal to the world that you're happy to share the current place and space you're in with those around you. When a smile is withheld  it sets the tone for unpleasantness, or at least, tension. Some great things about your smile is it's: unique, free, everyone loves it and it's usually reciprocated, doubling the blessing! So this week, why not smile at everyone you pass. It lights up your face and makes the world take notice of the happy person (YOU!) who understand a smile is the look (the only one interpreted the same way in every tribe and nation) which speaks volumes of acceptance, understanding, compassion and welcome!"

The power of a smile is the story behind the story, Because Amelia Smiled.

Dolls - Crochet a Rag Doll & I'm Giving an American Girl Doll Away!

Girl Rag Doll with Tiny Rag DollI love rag dolls! They are soft and cuddly and can make such a wonderful "friend" for a young girl to grow up with! So, as I browsed on Pinterest, I was very happy to find a crochet pattern for a rag doll . . . I'd change the look of the face because I think the nose is too big and red, but otherwise, this is a doll I'd definitely make if I had a granddaughter to give her to! Just follow this link and you'll find a page where you can download the pattern for this doll for free!

So, what about you? What kind of doll do you like? What dolls did you have when you were growing up? I had a Raggedy Ann and one of my daughter's first dolls was a Raggedy Ann, too!

Yes, I Have Blessings, But I Also Have Challenges - We All Do!

Yesterday I talked about the many blessings God has lavished on me; today, I want to take a moment to talk about challenges which have also been part of my life. Just as we all have blessings - big and small - in our lives, we also have challenges. This morning as I read my Grandmother's Bible, the devotion talked about "Strength in Adversity". Rebecca Manley Pippert said, "The measure of a person is seen in his or her response to adversity. David's life reminds us that being a believer, or even a future king, does not protect us from the ambiguities of life. God 'sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous' (Matthew 5:45). Our relationship with God does not protect us from the storm, but through knowing Him, we are protected from the storm's power to destroy us. We need to be realistic about the fact life is difficult. Instead of blaming God for our trials, we must turn to Him, for He alone can give us the resources we need to overcome them."

What are Your Blessings?

I've been thinking a lot lately about the many blessings God has lavished on me . . . of course, the first is His love, grace and forgiveness! He has also blessed me with an amazing husband - we met on a volcano and have been married for 31 years! We have two grown children and one daughter-in-law - all blessings from the hand of God! I have two wonderful grandsons - and another grandbaby on the way . . . most certainly blessings from God!

grandma's cookbook - Dinosaur Cookies!

As you know, my grandson Josiah is four years old and is all boy . . . he loves stories about monsters, dinosaurs, bears, cars, super heroes and even spiders . . . of course I'm not so happy about the spider part! So, the other day when I was at the store and saw a dinosaur cookie cutter, well, I had to get it and plan to surprise him with dinosaur cookies!

Josiah and Caleb come to my house on Thursday each week for a sleep-over . . . definitely a high-light of my week and something I look forward to each week . . . so yesterday I mixed a sugar cookie recipe and had it in the refrigerator waiting when the boys arrived and then we got to work making . . . and of course sampling . . . dinosaur cookies! It was - as one might expect - great, tasty fun!

The Big Book of Monster Stickers - I'm Giving One Away!

There are monsters at my house today! No, not the type Super Josiah "saves" me from. (See this link for more about this!) Today I'm surprising Josiah with the Big Book of Monster Stickers  . . . it seems like the perfect book for my sweet, monster-loving, four year old grandson!

A Peek at Next Month . . .

Just in case you haven't thought about it yet, the month of March this year, 2013, is a very busy month! We will be thinking about St. Patrick's Day, celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday and this year it is when we will be celebrating Resurrection Sunday! Like I said, it is a very busy month!

I have lots of fun crafts, recipes, book reviews and give-aways planned, so please plan to join in the conversations all month long here on grandma's cookie jar!

grandma's chuckles - "You Have to be Brave to be a Super Hero!"

My sweet grandson, Josiah, is four years old and he is really into Super Heroes! He LOVES the VeggieTales movie, The League of Incredible Vegetables and he LOVES his Super Cape! He will "fly" around my house singing, "♫♥♪ Super Josiah is here ♫♥♪ to save the day! ♫♥♪" Josiah told me yesterday right now he just pretends to be a Super Hero, but when he grows up he will be a Super Hero for real! Did I mention he has a "super" imagination?

Yesterday he was being "Super Josiah" when he came over to me and said, "I'm Super Josiah and you can be Super Grandma!" I said, "Okay! My 'super power' will be Super Kisses and Hugs!" Josiah let out a HUGE sigh and said, "Okay, but you HAVE to have a super power for when you fight bad guys, too." I said, "I don't know if I can fight bad guys." to which he replied, "You have to be brave to be a Super Hero."

crafting with grandma - Rocket Blanket to Crochet!

fun blanket for a kid - http://www.freepatterns.com/detail.html?code=FC01367_id=306My sweet grandson, Josiah LOVES to use his imagination! I'm often informed there are "monsters" and "aliens" at my house, but I'm not to worry because "Super Josiah" is here and "fortunately" he knows what to do

We have a cardboard rocket which Josiah and Caleb enjoy playing in - they often are "blasting off" for outer space where they might "space walk", but are most likely to encounter "aliens"! I LOVE listening to them play . . . imagination is such a wonderful gift from God!

grandma's cookie jar's "Birthday" & I'm Giving Away an American Girl Doll!

Generosity Day!

Today, February 14th is Generosity Day! Well, yes, it is also Valentine's Day, but not all of us have someone to celebrate Valentine's Day with. While "causes" can be a "dime a dozen", this new "cause" to refocus February 14th is one I can certainly support!

Praying "Hands"

The mom picked a scripture for each child that she prayed over them for an entire year. She traced their hand, wrote the scripture on it, laminated it, and placed it in her Bible. Must do. Now.Over the almost two years I've been writing grandma's cookie jar I've shared a lot of crafts with you. Today I have a "craft", but it is so much more. I found this idea on Pinterest and it is one of the best ideas I've found anywhere!

Just follow this link for the details, but basically you need to trace the hands of each of your grandchildren. Then ask God for a verse you can pray for each child for the coming year; write this verse on the handprint of each child. Put the handprints in your Bible or where you will see them each day and then use them to pray Scripture for your grandchildren all year long.

I Have a Winner!

grandma's cookbook - Heart PB & J

Sometimes when I'm thinking about what to fix for my grandsons, I forget the one important thing to remember . . . keep it simple. Children usually do not care if something is elaborate or took a long time to prepare. They are often delighted with simple things . . . such as heart PB & J sandwiches!

Yes, Friday is February 15th! You ask why you should mark your calender for this day? Because it is the day after Valentine's Day. Of course you realize this is obvious, so why does this matter? Because . . . it is the day all the heart-shaped candies go on clearance!!!! grandma's chuckles . . . Watch Out For Those Fire-Breathing Basset Hounds!

I LOVE the imagination of four year olds! I LOVE the way they see the world and how some things are just "obvious" . . . at least if you are four years old!

My sweet grandson, Josiah, was at my house yesterday and he told me the following. "Grandma, if we lived in a different world, we'd have to watch out for fire-breathing basset hounds!"  I smiled, and said, "Hmmm. I don't think I've ever seen a fire-breathing basset hound." To which he replied, "That's because they would only be in a different world!"

grandma's movie review - VeggieTales The Little House That Stood - I'm Giving One Away!

What do you get when you combine Jesus' parable of the wise & foolish builders, the three pigs and VeggieTales? Well . . . you get the new Veggie story, "The Little House That Stood . . . along with plenty of laughs and silliness, but most importantly, you get solid teaching about how we need to follow the "Master Builder's Handbook" and build our lives on a firm foundation!

grandma's bookshelf - Alone, Yet Not Alone - I'm Giving One Away!

Over the nearly two years I've been writing grandma's cookie jar, I've reviewed a LOT of books . . . mostly picture books for younger children. But, today I'm absolutely delighted for the opportunity to share a book with you which will make an impact on older children . . . and moms and grandmas, too. I love a good story, but when this story is also true, it is even better. Alone Yet Not Alone is the true story of sisters Barbara and Regina Leininger, ages 12 and 9, when they were kidnapped in 1755 by Allegheny warriors. It is powerful, frightening and challenging and one you - and your grandchildren - will not be able to put down or easily forget.

I Have a Winner!

I'm happy to announce Merry Sunshine is the winner in my 1-2-3 Dinosaurs Bite book give-away! (You'll find the review at this link) Thank you Merry Sunshine for reading grandma's cookie jar (please message me your address by February 15, 2013 so I can have it sent to you) and thank you Sterling Children's Books for sending one for me to review and for making another available for me to give away!
