Toy Review from Folkmanis Puppets

Over the years I've had a wonderful opportunity to share with you some of the great puppets from Folkmanis Puppets . . . and I'm so happy to be able to do so again today. I already shared two of them with you (they were giveaways in my 2016 Christmas Month of Giveaways, some will be donated to Caleb's kindergarten classroom, others to a local ministry which helps families in need and little Shane seems quite "taken" by the Corgi!) so, today I'm very happy to let you know about some additional new puppets from Folkmanis - if you are looking for gift ideas for Christmas, think about these!

Legacy Grandparenting Summit - Valerie Bell - Be Intentional & Make a Difference!

Two weeks ago we were getting ready for the start of the first-ever grandparenting conference, the Legacy Grandparenting Summit. More than 800 people participated with speakers such as Chuck Swindoll, Josh McDowell, Gary Chapman, John Trent, Larry Fowler and many more. It was an amazing opportunity for grandparents an church leaders to learn about the Biblical role of grandparents and how they can make a true and lasting difference in the lives of the children they love by being intentional Christian Grandparents.

This matters, because when grandparents are intentional about passing on a heritage of faith, the children are much more likely to grow to be people who love, know and follow God.

One of the general session speakers was Valerie Bell. Many of you may know her as the CEO of AWANA, but she is also a grandma! Valerie shared with us a powerful account of one of her grandsons and how at his birth he experienced serious medical complications. The doctors did not expect him to survive, but as Valerie said, "We may not always be on the same page with our adult children, but when the big things come along we are together! We pray together. We support one another." Happily, God did a miracle in her grandson's life and he survived - and has thrived in the ensuing five years!

Legacy Grandparenting Summit - Biblical Role of Grandparents

Do you know what the Bible says about the biblical role of grandparents? Did you know the Bible even says anything about it? Well, it actually has quite a bit to say about the biblical role of grandparents. At the first-ever Legacy Grandparenting Summit, we had the opportunity to listen to Josh Mulvihill share what the Bible says about the role of grandparents.

Josh is not yet a grandpa, but he has spent considerable time researching the Bible to find out what it has to say about the role of grandparents. He interviewed hundreds of grandparents across the country and learned by and large, grandparents do not know what God's Word has to say about their role as grandparents. They have accepted society's view of grandparents which pretty much boils down to, "closeness at a distance" . . . they are a playmate or companion, but they need to be careful not to interfere in their adult children's lives. This leaves grandparents confused and in most cases, not in a position to influence their grandchildren for Jesus.

So, what is the Biblical role of grandparents? Josh shared how there is one word we find over and over again in the Bible and how it refers to grandparenting. This word is, "Heritage" . . .

What Do You Do & a Thankful Thanksgiving Tablecloth

Tomorrow I'll be fixing my turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. I put sliced apples
under the turkey skin and in the cavity, along with butter and herbs to make it extra tasty. I love the flavors these add to the turkey . . . and the gravy!

What do you do to make your turkey extra tasty?

Also, if you are looking for something special you could do for your Thanksgiving - and still pull off at this late date, consider trying my Thankful Thanksgiving Tablecloth. All you need is a white tablecloth and permanent ink pens. At some point in your meal (I usually do this after dinner) hand out the markers and let everyone draw or write about something for which they are thankful. Be sure to date (and write what the little ones drew/scribbled, so in following years you will know what it was for which they were thankful!) If you are planning to try this with your family, be sure to put something between the table and your Thankful Thanksgiving Tablecloth, so the ink from the pens does not soak through to your table! Use waxed paper, newspaper or plastic, but be sure to put something there to protect your table top!

Legacy Grandparenting Summit - Crawford Loritts - For a Time We Cannot See

Last week at the Legacy Grandparenting Summit, I had the privilege and great joy of listening to Crawford Loritts speak about how much it matters for grandparents to be intentional about passing on a heritage of faith to their grandchildren and today I'm so happy to share with you what he had to say.

First of all, Crawford Loritts has traveled throughout the US, Caribbean, Asia, Canada, South America, Africa and parts of Europe preaching in churches, evangelistic outreaches, conferences, in colleges and seminaries. He has been the featured speaker at Super Bowls, NCAA Final Four Chapel, and the Pentagon with senior military officers. He and his wife Karen are featured speakers at Family Life marriage conferences and are co-authors of, Developing Character in Your Child. Crawford has written eight books including the newly released, Unshaken. Presently, Crawford serves as Senior Pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, GA.

He shared with us from Psalm 78:5-7 and challenged us by saying we are here for a time we cannot see; what we do impacts future generations. He asked us, "What are we going to do with our moments?", then went on to share how family exists to steward God's purpose from one generation to the next. Think about this. What we do is not just for "now". It is for generations we will not even meet!

No Matter What, God Offers Us His Perfect Peace!

The news for the past year, and especially the past few weeks, has left many people feeling sad, angry and afraid. So, today I want to just simply share with you a Bible passage and it is my prayer it will encourage you, so you are able to encourage your grandchildren.

On this day, even when there is uncertainty in the world around me, I'm thankful for the perfect peace God gives me when I trust Him! Look at Isaiah 26:3-9,12; 28:16; 30:18 -

Legacy Grandparenting Summit - Key Note Speaker, Chuck Swindoll with His Wife & Grandchildren!

The Legacy Grandparenting Summit was a opportunity filled with "firsts" . . .
  • It was the first-ever conference focused upon Intentional Christian Grandparenting.
  • It was the first-ever opportunity for grandparents from across the country (and even from a couple other countries) to gather to be encouraged and equipped to pass on a heritage of faith to their grandchildren.
  • It was the first-ever time resource providers gathered to showcase the resources they offered for grandparents. (And there was an exhibit hall filled with resource providers and resources!)
  • It was the first-ever time when a large slate of general session speakers and breakout speakers provided time for grandparents to be encouraged and challenged as they learned to pass on a heritage of faith to their grandchildren.
Yes, it was an opportunity filled with "firsts" for sure!

One more of these "firsts" was experienced on Tuesday night when Chuck Swindoll took the stage to speak. Yes, he has been the speaker many, many times before at conferences across the country for sure, but this time he did something he has never done before. He invited his wife and three of his grandchildren to join him on the stage to speak to us about who he and his wife are as grandparents, how they are passing on their faith, what they are doing and why.

Watching for God's Fingerprints

In just a few weeks, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving. I love doing this - preparing the turkey and all the fixings and gathering with family for a special time to be thankful for our many blessings! living a thankful life. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.

But, while I love Thanksgiving, it is extremely important to me whether I am thankful all year - not just on one day. I am committed to being a thankful grandma and today I'm ever so thankful God answers prayer and my grandsons are able to see and experience how He does this! We have been praying for specific things and as God answers - which He has been, the boys and I talk about these answers and spend time thanking God for them!

I have a special journal which has photos of my sweet boys on it. It is our place to record how God answers our prayers. The boys are able to write or draw God's answers which I date and write a description, as needed. Then, when they need to be encouraged . . . or when this grandma needs to be encouraged as well . . . all we have to do is take a look in our blessings journal to remind ourselves how God has answered our prayers in the past! This will give us much for which to be thankful and will give us hope for how He will answer in the present and future!

An Election Day Prayer

I am so glad the day to vote is finally here. All these months of negative, rude and outright horrible things being said by both parties; I'm so ready for it to be over. As a grandma I'm disappointed I can not vote for a presidential candidate who I can point to for my grandchildren as a person who shows grace and character. Someone who is a good example in word and deed.

However; I believe God is bigger than our political system and do not put my hope or trust in anything or anyone other than Him. So, as I get ready to vote, the following is my prayer -

Dear God, please give wisdom to people today as they vote here in the USA. Regardless of the outcome, please use the result to draw people to You, deepen our trust in You and help us know and walk with You more closely. I pray in the coming days, weeks, months and years those of us who love You, will show ourselves to be people who reflect Your grace, mercy and love so people who do not know You will be drawn to You. Whoever is elected, in each office throughout our country, please give them wisdom and the desire to truly uphold the office to which they are elected with character and integrity. Thank You, Amen.

Keep Being Faithful!

Each morning as I listen to the news I am reminded of 2 Timothy 3 where it says in the last days people will love only themselves and money. They will be proud, stuck-up, rude, and disobedient to their parents. They will also be ungrateful and hateful. Their words will be cruel, and they will have no self-control or pity. They will hate everything which is good and will be puffed up with pride. Instead of loving God, they will love pleasure - they are evil people who pretend to be what they are not and will become worse than ever, as they fool others and are fooled themselves. (CEV)

Does this not describe the world in which we - and our grandchildren live? Especially with the election just a few days away? We could easily become discouraged, and even afraid, but then Paul goes on to tell Timothy the following in verses 14-17 . . .

crafting with grandma - Clothespin Ornaments!

In evaluating the craft supplies I have on-hand and the ones I need to buy for my grandsons to make Christmas Ornaments for their Christmas Service project this year (they are going to sell ornaments they make to give money to the Legacy Coalition), I found I had a lot of clothespins. crafting with grandma - Photo Ornaments

I love things with photos of my sweet grandsons on them . . . necklace, cookie jar, mugs, calendars, it really doesn't matter what it is; if there are photos of the boys on it, I'm going to love it! So, when I was browsing on Pinterest and saw a link for making your own photo ornaments, I knew I'd have to share it with you . . . and try making them myself!

Redeem the Time We are Given - the 43% Matters!

Do you know why 43% matters? It truly matters, because according to the Barna Group, 43% of people make the decision to receive God's gift of grace and forgiveness by placing their trust in Jesus before the age of 13. Yes, before the age of 13.

This "statistic" should get our attention and remind us how we grandparents know something parents often do not. What is it we grandparents know? We know the truth about how very, very quickly our sweet, little grandchildren are growing up. We remember how fast our own children grew up; it may not have felt like it at the time, as the day-in-day-out work of raising children can make it seem like it is moving along so very slowly . . . will they ever be potty-trained???!!!

Yes, raising children can seem like it takes forever, but the truth is, it really flies by. This is the truth and we do know it. Children grow up so quickly, and if 43% of them make the decision to love and follow Jesus before the age of 13, we have just a very few short years to influence them, teach them; to pass on a heritage of faith.
