Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About the Benefits and Challenges of Having Duel Citizenship

When I learned I am a "Lost Canadian" it was an automatic thought of how thrilled and happy I was to be able to having duel citizenship with Canada - and the USA. But, as with any big thing in our lives, there are benefits and challenges which are important for us to know about before making those big decisions. Today I'm writing what I've learned about the benefits and challenges of having duel citizenship.

Holding dual citizenship with the United States and Canada provides the freedom to live, work, and vote in both countries without needing visas. However, it also subjects you to complex cross-border tax filing obligations and the overlapping laws of both nations. Both the U.S. and Canada legally permit dual nationality. 

Benefits of U.S.-Canada Dual Citizenship

Freedom of Movement: Travel across the U.S.-Canada border seamlessly and reside or retire in either country indefinitely. 
Work and Education: Work in either nation without a permit and study at domestic tuition rates rather than paying international student fees. 
Political and Social Rights: Vote, run for public office, and access public healthcare and social benefits in your country of residence. 
Two Passports: Hold both an American and a Canadian passport, expanding your global mobility.
