Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About Prince Edward Island

As I wrote yesterday, Canada has Providences and Territories, so today I am going to share with you what this "Lost Canadian" has learned about one of these Providences - Prince Edward Island.

Today is National American Sign Language Day

Today is National American Sign Language Day, and according to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are 72 million deaf people in the world. and there are more than 300 sign languages out there. Let's take a few minutes to learn about sign language - did you know . . .

Lilacs - Shockingly, Related to Olives!

While I do have the "black thumbs of death", I very much enjoy seeing beautiful flowers bloom - one reason I enjoy our membership to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park as the people there absolutely do NOT have the "black thumbs of death"! A few years ago my daughter gave me some lilac bushes - my husband planted them and shockingly, they are growing!

I LOVE lilacs! Especially the darker purple lilacs - they are SO pretty and the fragrance of lilacs is one of my favorite fragrances! This is why the flower for today is lilac - so, here are some fun facts about lilacs . . .

I'm a Lost Canadian!

I would like to invite you to join me on a journey as I learn about Canada! I have lived most of my life in West Michigan, just thirty minutes from beautiful Lake Michigan. I lived for a few years in Northern California, two hours from Oregon, where I met my husband - but I was born in West Michigan and have lived most of my life here. Of course I knew my dad and my grandpa, but my great-grandpa died before I was born. Along with not knowing him, I also did not know - until last week - my great grandpa was born in Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada, and my great-great grandpa and great-great grandma were born in East Hawkesbury, Prescott, Ontario, Canada, and  Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada.

Irises - Beautiful, but Could be a Problem . . .

One of my favorite flowers is the Iris! My grandma always had such beautiful Irises - since I now live in what was once her house, each year I get to enjoy her irises when they bloom all over again - which is even more of a treat since they were my grandma's irises to begin with! So, as I thought about which flowers to write about this Spring, of course I had to include the Iris - did you know . . .

Hibiscus Flowers - Beautiful, Tasty, & Useful!

crafting with grandma - Mother's Day Heart Gift

Mother's Day is May 10th so I thought I'd share a gift idea which you could help your grandchildren make for their mom. I was browsing on Pinterest  and found a craft which you could help your grandchildren with depending on the level of help they need - older grandchildren would need little help and younger grandchildren would need more, but it is a craft which many children could make!

Even More Dr. Seuss Quotes!

Are you ready for a few more Dr. Seuss quotes? Since Dr. Seuss wrote a lot of books; we have a lot of quotes to think about . . . today the quotes are ones which do this . . . make us think!

So . . . my Dr. Seuss quotes for today are . . .

Dahlias - Actually Taste Like Potatoes!

Every year Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has an amazing Dahlia Show - I never knew how very interesting they are before I went to the Dahlia Show - not only do they come in many sizes, but in nearly every color except for blue and black. So, as we learn about flowers, the Dahlia had to be one I shared fun facts about with you - so you can share with the children you love!

More Quotes from Dr. Seuss!

My grands typically spend the night on Saturdays, and since my oldest grand is just a few months from being 18, I know what an amazing blessing it is they still want to come for their weekly sleepover! When they are here we often play Abducktion (a very fun board game) or chess - both require strategy and my grands are quite strategic!

So, with a mind for "fun", I thought it would work to share some additional Dr. Seuss quotes with you!

He is Darth Vader. I can NOT hug him!

Don't you just love it when your grandchildren show their imagination? Well, nine years ago when my youngest grandson was three, he looked at his Poppa and said; "I'm Kenobi, Kenobi." Then ran at him to attack! Apparently Kenobi, Kenobi (Obi Wan Kenobi) decided Poppa was Darth Vadar and had to attack him! Kenobi, Kenobi did very well - defeated Darth Vadar. I asked him if Poppa might be tired (after about 20 minutes of running full bore at poppa, arms - light sabers - flailing) and maybe he was in need of a hug. To which he said (rather indignantly) "He is NOT Poppa. He is Darth Vadar. I can NOT hug him!" Of course he can not! 😃
